Following the initial announcement on Aug. 7, 2018 that Health Management Services (HMS) LLC. would be taking over management of Platte Valley Medical Clinic (PVMC) with a tentative date of Oct. 1, many wondered when the inevitable transfer of management would take place. It was suspected that, despite the transfer in management, Dr. Bryan Kaiser would see his lease of the building through until the end of the year. In the Sept. 25 edition of the Rawlins Daily Times, however, a public notice...

  • Solitude versus Inclusion

    Stacy Crimmins, Saratoga-Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce|Oct 3, 2018

The second layer of the Economic Development Tiers Includes Quality of Life and Workforce Development. This month my thoughts turn to the third block: Infrastructure Development. Living in a small, rural, isolated community can be thought of as a negative situation. But many of us feel the exact opposite. We choose the Good Times Valley for a multitude of reasons and relish those attributes. Such as a sense of calm and quiet. Feeling safe. Knowing our neighbors by name. Support. However, when it comes to infrastructure, we want the same things...

  • Confessions of a coffee addict

    Joshua Wood|Oct 3, 2018

“Even bad coffee is better than no coffee at all.” ~ David Lynch Coffee is a reporter’s best friend. Freshly-brewed coffee, hot out of the pot and steaming from the mug is best. Nearly day-old coffee that’s been heated up in the microwave will suffice in a pinch. I’ve recently noticed that stores are beginning to sell edible coffee cubes for people too busy to make coffee. I don’t think I’m that far just yet and if I am, someone please tell me. Now that I mention it, though, I am curious as to w...

  • An apology with hope for a bright future for the clinic

    Oct 3, 2018

Dear Editor, In regard to my employment at the Platte Valley Medical Clinic: Change is hard. For everyone. For those with significant medical needs it is particularly difficult to establish care with a new and unknown provider. Or in a new and unknown health care system. Having worked in nursing for the past 27 years, I have come to understand that change is the norm in health care. It is a constant that cannot be avoided. But it can be managed in ways that are helpful to those most impacted. Or, it can be mismanaged with the most important...

The Saratoga Lady Panthers, the current No. 2 team in 1A Southwest, had a pretty easy weekend as the only game for the varsity was against the No. 2 team in 1A Southeast, the Rock River Lady Longhorns (25-14, 25-21, 22-25, 25-15) who they hosted Friday evening. The last time the two teams met was when Rock River hosted the Lady Panthers. Saratoga returned home from that match with a 3-2 victory. • Panthers keep pouncing

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 3, 2018

Saratoga High School football head coach Logan Wright said each week he keeps being more proud of what his players are accomplishing. Although the team’s wins are not counted in 6-man football and are considered exhibition, the Panthers are playing for keeps and their record shows it. They are 4-1 and their only loss is to Farson, currently the number one ranked team in 6-man. He said the game on Friday against Guernsey-Sunrise didn’t start out well, with the Vikings scoring the first tou...

  • Lady Tigers take two

    Joshua Wood|Oct 3, 2018

While the Encampment Lady Tigers had a rough few weekends recently, they finally had some wins to celebrate as they had a 2-0 weekend. Encampment travelled to face off against the Laramie Lady Plainsmen Sophomores (25-18, 25-12, 25-19) on Friday and hosted the Rock River Lady Longhorns (22-25, 25-20, 26-24, 14-25, 15-11) on Saturday. While neither victory was a conference win, it gave the Lady Tigers a moral boost and showed how much work they've put in recently as well as how much they've...

On Friday, after the impressive win of the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miner football team, the residents of Hanna got to watch the Lady Miner volleyball team handily beat the Guernsey-Sunrise Lady Vikings. The Lady Miners took control quickly and the Lady Vikings were down 11-6 in the first match, but the guests rallied to make it 16-12 and the HEM homecoming fans in attendance started to get nervous. The meeting followed exponential growth of the fire over the weekend of Sept. 22 as it threatened communities within the Skyline and Big Creek area. Keith McLendon|Oct 3, 2018

River restoration is a set of activities that aid in the environmental health of a river. Most of these projects are aimed at flood management, improving fish and game habitat, landscape improvement, bank erosion repair and more. Four river restoration projects are currently ongoing with three proceeding on the Encampment River and one on the North Platte. The benefits to River restoration are manifold as these projects aid agricultural producers in preventing loss of land due to erosion, help...

  • Pioneer/plains playthings

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 3, 2018

Kay Grant has been educating students on life of the early pioneers and the Plains Indians culture for 13 years. She does this in a variety of ways, from using actual stone instruments used in day-to-day life to games and toys the children played with. She has a buffalo hide that has been on display for its tenth year and she has students scrape off a little hair with stone tools. About half the hair is left, which is amazing given how many years she has displayed it and allowed the scraping. Sh...
