  • Increased revenue, increased deficit?

    Joshua Wood|Oct 2, 2019

While the Saratoga Airport Advisory Board recently made the decision to move to quarterly meetings, a workshop concerning the airport fund had been scheduled for Sept. 24. It was the hope of members of the advisory board, some of whom were members of the previous board, to get answers following the audit of the Town of Saratoga for 2017/2018. The audit, which showed several enterprise accounts in the red, reported that the airport fund had a negative balance of $221,679. According to Wyoming...

  • Remembering Victor

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 2, 2019

The Hanna Basin Museum held a dedication ceremony for its newest building on Wednesday. The Victor G. Anderson Memorial building dedication had over 100 attendees to honor Anderson for his tireless work in saving history of Carbon County. It is the largest of the three buildings on the museum's grounds and was finished in the summer of 2018, although it was not ready for showing exhibitions. The naming of the building was kept a secret from his wife Nancy. She came to the ceremony thinking it wa...

    Joshua Wood|Oct 2, 2019

The long-awaited workshop between the mayors of Saratoga, Encampment and Riverside to discuss the lease between the Town of Saratoga and Health Management Services (HMS) finally took place on Sept. 27. While mayors Greg Salisbury of Encampment and Leroy Stephenson of Riverside were in attendance, Mayor John Zeiger was absent. Zeiger had informed the council and the public during the Sept. 17 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council that he would be unable to attend due to a meeting in Laramie. In...

  • Ask and you shall receive

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 2, 2019

The Park Last Wednesday, I had a day that made me love Carbon County a little bit more. My morning started having me take stock of our town parks in Hanna. I am on the Recreation Board and that morning we were taking stock on what needed to be fixed. It was a pleasant day and I found myself walking around, enjoying the scenery. Fall is knocking with its changing of the leaves and the colors around me getting ready for the coming of winter. I was glad I was taking in the beauty of the harvest...

  • Airport questions

    Oct 2, 2019

Dear Editor, I have read with interest the latest news (Sept. 25) about Saratoga finances and the questions being raised by council member Mr. Jon Nelson. I also ready with interest the week before about the $80,000 being the responsibility of Saratoga to pave the airport parking. I would like to ask three simple questions: 1. To begin with, why is Mr. Lance Grubb, as representative of the airport board, say he is sure he could come up with $80,000 within the “community” of Saratoga or County budgets? The majority of Saratoga town res...

  • Tigers sink claws into Rams

    Joshua Wood|Oct 2, 2019

Encampment’s six-man program continues to see success as they travel throughout the state. The Tigers were hosted by the Dubois Rams on Saturday and hit the ground running to eventually take down the Rams with a final score of 60-24. “We were able to get a fast start on Saturday,” said Kegan Willford, head coach of the Encampment Tigers. “The team was ready to play.” The readiness for the Tigers to play appeared to catch Dubois off guard in the 1st quarter, beginning with a 35 yard pass from Rei...

In the competitive realm that is the 1A Southwest Conference, the Saratoga Lady Panthers were riding high on a six win streak following a victory over the Farson-Eden Lady Pronghorns (25-3, 25-11, 25-10) on Friday evening. On Saturday afternoon, however, the Cokeville Lady Panthers secured their second win in the Valley (19-25, 14-25, 20-25) and dropped Saratoga to the No. 2 spot. As Saratoga kept the heat on the visiting Lady Panthers, however, it would appear that a matchup of both Lady Panthe...

    Joshua Wood|Oct 2, 2019

Saratoga Middle/High School hosted the Shana Ward Memorial Invitational this weekend and, while the Bartlett twins didn't secure the top two spots as they have in the past, the runners they fell to were from two 3A schools. Girls varsity had 31 runners compete at the Saratoga Hot Springs Resort golf course. Out of those, Encampment's Amber Stubbs placed 21st after finishing with a time of 24:03 and Saratoga's Kaitlyn Campbell finished with a time of 24:56 and placed 24th. Out of 38 runners in...

  • Getting their confidence

    Joshua Wood|Oct 2, 2019

The Encampment Lady Tigers continue to grow as a team as they work to show that they have what it takes to play in the competitive 1A Southwest Conference. On Friday afternoon, Encampment came within points of overcoming the Farson-Eden Lady Pronghorns (21-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-27) over four sets. Saturday morning, Tiger Nation hosted defending State Champions, the Cokeville Lady Panthers (7-25, 12-25, 10-25) but were unable to take a set from the visiting Lady Panthers. Lady Tigers vs. Lady...

  • Running with the Devils

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 2, 2019

The Saratoga High School football team led against Hulett until the last four minutes. “We ran into a senior heavy team,” Head Football Coach Logan Wright said. “We gave it up late and it was our game to win, but that senior experience might have made the difference.” Wright said the Panthers came out fast and scored 18 points to the Devils’ 14 points. “We did a lot of things right,” Coach Wright said. “But in the last quarter we had a tough moment.” Wright is referring to how the Panthers had...

  • Miners defeat Doggers

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 2, 2019

The sunny, breezy day on Saturday was perfect for football. The Hanna, Elk Mountain and Medicine Bow Miners took advantage of it, beating the Lingle-Ft. Laramie football in a convincing manner. The first quarter, HEM was ahead 26-0 with seven minutes left to play. The Doggers kept trying, but the defense of the Miners was a wall not to be penetrated. The second quarter, Conor McGraw ran for a long touchdown in first play. The score was 32-0. Head Coach Zach Scott started integrating scout...

  • Until nobody comes and the doors are locked

    Joshua Wood|Oct 2, 2019

"What's sad for me is the fact that, about half a dozen years ago, I told the bishop I'll stay here until nobody comes and the doors are locked. Guess what? Kind of a bad day for me." On Sept. 22, nearly 3,500 people attended the first Wyoming sermon of popular artist Kanye West at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody. That same day, nearly 300 miles to the southeast, Reverend Arlen Rounds bore both smiles and tears as he gave what was likely the last sermon at St. Luke's Episcopal...
