  • Making Cents

    D'Ron Campbell|Sep 19, 2024

Investing local funds to achieve higher returns on investments re emerged on the agenda at the September 3 Saratoga Town Council meeting. Another local government investment pool representative visited the council to inform them about governmental investment opportunities and options. As was previously reported, on August 6 Troy Hunsacker from Wyoming CLASS presented information from their investment pool. Joan Evans of Wyoming Government Investment Fund (WGIF) said “Saratoga already has some funds in WGIF in the liquid asset series,” but off...

    Liz Wood|Sep 19, 2024

Editor’s Note: This is the first in a series of stories of fire mitigation in the Medicine Bow National Forest. More than 30 people attended the Sierra Madre Fire Preparedness meeting September 9 at the Encampment Opera House. Lenny Layman, Carbon County Emergency Management Coordinator, organized the meeting with several county and local entities as a panel to explain their coordination when and if there is a fire. Layman said he decided to organize the panel because residents of Encampment w...

    Liz Wood|Sep 19, 2024

A bus full of 6th and 8th grade students rode to the Snowy Range September 11 for a science class with Encampment K-12 sixth grade teacher Jordan Seitz. “Rain or snow, we go,” Seitz said. Seitz also teaches 6th and 8th grade earth science, but combines classes for different trips and rotates locations through the years. The science field trip was filled with hikes, hugging rocks and learning about eras from the past which shaped the east side of the Snowy Range. The unique classroom allowed stu...

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Sep 19, 2024

“This is a really heavy topic and nobody wants to be having this conversation, but I do think it’s in our best interest to have these discussions and make decisions on our own behalf.” A closing comment from Kassey Westring, chairman of the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) Board of Trustees, summarized a nearly hour long discussion at their pre-meeting work session on September 16. The topic, which included both Carbon County Sheriff Alex Bakken and Encampment Police Chief Kevin Shue,...

  • So long, Saratoga

    Kaitlyn Campbell|Sep 19, 2024

Four years ago, I started a small internship here at the Saratoga Sun. I started with zero pay, zero idea what I was doing, and zero plans for the future. I don’t think I was engaged with the idea of the internship very much at first. I thought it might be fun, and that it might look good on my resume, but I don’t think I saw myself consistently returning to work at the Sun every summer I was home from college. I am now headed into my senior year at the University of Wyoming. These past few mon...

  • A hard, but needed, discussion

    Saratoga Sun Editorial|Sep 19, 2024

Parents send their children to school each morning with the expectation that they will safely return home each afternoon. We entrust their safety to the teachers and staff of their respective schools with the understanding that they care for our children as much as we do. Over the past several years, we have seen school shooting after school shooting where teachers literally laid down their lives to protect their students. In the past five years, the Wyoming Legislature has attempted to repeal all gun-free zones in the state which would allow... Full story

  • Moving Beyond Statute for your, democracy's sakes

    Sep 19, 2024

It’s time for everyone to come to the same table and talk. We see it in our own organization as well as outside entities — people work in silos, and the COVID-19 pandemic aftermath only heightened that fact. Folks have tunnel vision and only see instances from their own perspective and not another’s. That’s why The Sheridan Press editorial staff has set the table for local agencies’ public information officers to grab a free lunch and hear from Wyoming Press Association Attorney Chris Wages and State of Wyoming Public Records Ombudsman...

  • When all feels lost, find hope in faith

    Rev. Susan Dyer|Sep 19, 2024

His name was Kevin Hines. Kevin battled a bipolar disorder in his teenage years. At age 19, Kevin’s depression and his feeling of being alone in the world led him to the Golden Gate Bridge. Kevin’s story is related in his documentary “Cracked, Not Broken”. He relates that, as he approached the guardrail of the bridge he was thinking, he was begging, “if one person, only one person, would speak to me, ask if I’m ok, or even smiles at me, I will tell my story, I won’t jump”. He was surprised when a woman approached him, then asked him to ta...

  • Living on Purpose: Good deeds are not a substitute for love

    Dr. William F. Holland|Sep 19, 2024

I was reading an article the other day about how most people are confident that just being nice secures them a place in heaven. But is this true? Of course, we want to believe that it’s relatively easy to go through the pearly gates but is being a decent person all there is to it? Have you ever heard the expression, “They would give you the shirt off their back” referring to someone’s kindness and generosity? It’s a notable character trait, but is this the standard for qualifying for eternal life? Not necessarily. Contrary to popular belief, e...

  • Laramie County sheriff increases ICE detainer hold to 48 hours

Ivy Secrest, Wyoming Tribune Eagle Via Wyoming News Exchange|Sep 19, 2024

CHEYENNE — Detainment time for adjudicated undocumented inmates was increased from two hours to 48 hours by Laramie County Sheriff Brian Kozak. The change will bring detainment times in line with a nationally accepted standard and has been a long-term goal of Kozak’s since he was elected sheriff. Federal law states that state and local law enforcement authorities may only hold persons on immigration detainers for 48 hours after the completion of their jail time. “I know that some criminal aliens were released into our community, into Cheye...

  • To stay or leave Wyoming?

Carrie Haderlie, Laramie Boomerang Via Wyoming News Exchange|Sep 19, 2024

LARAMIE — More than two-thirds of University of Wyoming students recently surveyed by the Wyoming Business Council said that a future in Wyoming is a “maybe” or a “no.” Additionally, more than 60% of people who are born in Wyoming leave by the time they’re in their 30s. Most do not return. Rather than lament statistics, the Wyoming Business Council came together with University of Wyoming students Tuesday night for a comprehensive event and panel discussion to encourage discussion between leaders and students in the hope of better understanding...

  • The Couple That Works Together

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Sep 19, 2024

Among the many smiling faces which can be found in the Platte Valley, perhaps none are more recognizable than those of John and Ciji Bauer. This young couple can often be found working together at the Saratoga Sandwich Company, one of the four businesses owned by Cassie and Tommy Orduno, where they greet customers with warm smiles. John, or Johnny, particularly stands out as a barista for remembering a customer’s drink order—even if it has been months since they visited the restaurant. “It’s ama...

  • Lady Tigers sweep 1A Jamboree

    Liz Wood|Sep 19, 2024

The Encampment Lady Tigers (1-1, 1-1) fell to the Little Snake River Rattlers (2-0) September 10 in Baggs. The first two sets the Lady Tigers closed in on the Lady Rattlers 20-25 and 18-25. The third set was not as close with a 11-25 score. “They got frustrated,” Lady Tigers Head Coach Janice Peterson said. The Lady Rattlers are a good team and know how to expose our weaknesses, Peterson said. “I reminded the girls they need to stay in a good mindset. They have to believe in thems...

  • Panthers Impress on the Road

    D'Ron Campbell|Sep 19, 2024

The Saratoga Panthers stormed to a solid victory on the road against Wind River High School. Although not a conference game, the Panthers once again had a near shutout with a final score of 50-8. “It was a physical game against Wind River and an impressive win for the Panthers,” said head coach Jared Mason. Last week’s game against Cheyenne South JV was prominent in the ground game, but this week’s game showed the team can put up yards passing. The Panthers continued their rushing yards with 239, however QB Jace Westring balanced the plays w...
