The Party on the Platte may have raised enough money this year to replace the gym floor, according to Joe Glode, chairman of the Platte Valley Community Center (PVCC) Joint Powers Board. "It was fantastic," Glode said. "I don't know how we could have done it any better." The Great Hall was filled to capacity with nearly 300 people attending, Glode said. Joe Elder, the PVCC's executive director, said they raised nearly a gross total of $95,000 Saturday night at the annual fundraiser. A $20,000...  Website

    Mike Dunn|Sep 17, 2014

Copeland said the test results will likely reflect lower scores from previous years, as they make the transition to meet Common Core standards. The tests were taken by students in March and April of 2014, and their results will be released to the public on Sept. 22....

  • Planning commission revamps fencing ordinance

    Mike Dunn|Sep 17, 2014

The fencing ordinance will receive another makeover. The planning commission voted to amend the fencing ordinance which will allow for a seven-foot fence, with 75 percent visibility in fences higher than four feet. The planning commission wrestled with the changes for more than an hour. The major topic of concern was how high does the fence have to be to keep deer out of a homeowner’s yard. Initially, the proposed ordinance called for a maximum of a six-foot fence, with 50 percent visibility i...

  • Celebrity nympho hacking scandal

    Keith McLendon|Sep 17, 2014

It’s time again for the new model year and the old model year-end clearance sales. Summer has come to its Labor Day ending and fall is in the air. For me, this means my birthday is around the corner. This year, I will have hit the half century mark. The big Five-Oh, or maybe Five-Ow seeing as some part of me almost always has some kind of pain. The new normal is a traveling soreness. My foot might hurt one day, my shoulder the next. The knee is acting up today or maybe it was a backache. Some da...

  • A dose of his own medicine, or, my son never writes

    Sep 17, 2014

To the editor: Amazingly, people can do the strangest things. For example, I just have finished looking over more than seventy “Retro-Blog” columns written by Keith McLendon and published in the Sun from 2009 to this year. In his essays, McLendon has covered such diverse topics as the rules for waving at people in Saratoga (8-4-10), time flying like arrows (11-10-10), craving grilled cheese (7-11-12), licensing pressure cookers (4-24-13), and smelling road cones (5-28-14). On a more personal level, he has praised his mother (5-8-13) and dec...

  • Cokeville too much for Saratoga football

    Mike Dunn|Sep 17, 2014

When you go to play a powerhouse team like Cokeville, some pre-game jitters are to be expected. But Saratoga football head coach Scott Bokelman said the jitters ended up getting the best of them in their 48-9 loss to the Cokeville Panthers. Bokelman said his team did not play nearly as well as he expected. “We came into the game just a little bit intimidated,” he said. The game against Cokeville was a wake-up call for the Panthers, Bokelman said. He said in order for them to compete in fut...

The Encampment Lady Tigers beat Little Snake River in four sets Friday night in front of a full house at the Encampment School gymnasium. With purple on one side of the bleachers and red on the other side, there was constant cheering during the match. In the first set, the Lady Rattlers had a strong start with three unanswered points before the Lady Tigers stepped up and took charge. It would take a few of Alyssa Barkhurst's stinging kills before the Lady Rattlers would react to Barkhurst. The...  Website

  • Schwartzkopf takes first

    Erik Gantt|Sep 17, 2014

Only one member of the Saratoga High School (SHS) golf team went to Douglas for last week’s golf tournament, and he walked away with first place. Braxton Schwartzkopf shot a 77 on the only day of the tournament which was shortened due to weather. The next closest golfers both shot 79. “I just played really solid golf the whole day,” Schwartzkopf said. He said he had a couple of birdies that helped and he made the shots he needed to. This was Schwartzkopf’s first win of the season. As far as...

    Erik Gantt|Sep 17, 2014

Gary Stull opened the public comments at the Sept. 11 Encampment Town Council meeting this past Thursday by complaining about the burned structure at 507 McCaffrey. “This property has been sitting as an eyesore to the city since April,” Stull said, adding “The top story is starting to lean to the south and it needs to be taken down before snowfall.” Mayor Greg Salisbury said the problem is that it is private property and the owner has a building permit to rebuild, and that as long as it is boar...

    Erik Gantt|Sep 17, 2014

Editor’s note: this is the second in a two-part series on the restoration of historic fire lookouts in general and the fire lookout tower at Kennaday Peak in particular. By Erik Gantt [email protected] “The lookout symbol is so iconic to our agency that when the Forest Service Honor Guard was developing a coin to give thanks to folks that have contributed to the agency or families of the fallen the lookout was chosen for one side of the coin,” Melanie Fullman, District Forest Range...

  • Democratic weather, bark beetle survey, dog saves life and hobo pool preferred

    Sep 17, 2014

1 Years Ago Sept. 17, 1914 Well, we had a fine summer. Crops have been good and the farmer and rancher both wear smiles “that isn’t going to be pulled off with a donkey.” The weather was especially fine until Saturday afternoon, when it went democratic and remained with us a few days. However, this may clear up the situation until late in the fall. Like all democratic conditions, there is generally a long republican spell after the shock. The next snow will arrive somewhere between the 2nd and the 7th of November, 1914, according to the p...
