On Friday, I will begin my 10th year at the Saratoga Sun. This has been the most rewarding job I have ever had, not to mention the most stressful. Most of the time, it is a good stress. The most stressful days are, without a doubt, Mondays and Tuesdays. It doesn’t matter how prepared we think we are coming into the week, Monday is a long day. Last minute advertisements are coming in, news stories that came in over the weekend need phone calls made and we have sports stories to write during t...
How many votes should a councilperson have on town issues? This is a question that has come up at town meetings and during the election forums sponsored by the Valley Service Organization. Most candidates at the forums agreed there is not a problem as long as they vote the same way on the board as they do on the council. Citizens and town board members don’t always agree. What has caused concern is the potential for a council member who serves on a board to disagree with a board recommendation and vote against it. The council member then has i...
Editor Kudos goes out to Union Wireless and Carbon County School District 2 for bringing in Craig Conrad to not only speak with the students but to share with families during the back to school picnic. I hope that the students got as much out of what he had to share as this parent did. I am going to borrow a quote that he used that night “When it gets darkest the stars come out” this is translated to mean “Don’t lose hope”. I think that all of us have experienced those darkest nights in our lives, and if it wouldn’t have been for the stars s...

A storm was not the only thing to roll into Saratoga on Friday night, as the Fort Laramie-Lingle Doggers (1-0, 1-0) overpowered the Saratoga Panthers (0-1, 0-1) 13 to 46. Head Coach Scott Bokelman said there is still a learning curve for many of the younger and inexperienced players. "Our youth is really what showed, especially on the line," he said. "We have to work on staying on our blocks." After giving up three touchdowns on turnovers, Bokelman stressed they have to continue working on ball...

Coach Rex Hohnholt said "we had a tremendous week of work heading in to that meet," and he was worried the team would be tired. "It bodes well for our future," Hohnholt said of the consistently faster times. Varsity boys Andrew Oiler and Jeremy Dettere...
After playing the Saratoga Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday, Saratoga High School's Volleyball Coach Shayley Love has a pretty good idea of how her girls are working together. Friday morning started a little rough as the Lady Panthers went up against the Little Snake River Valley team. They lost their first match in two sets 25-19, 25-4. "I don't know why, but we don't get as pumped up for some teams," Love said of the match against Snake River. "We played well the first set, but...

He has what you call a wrestling instinct." -Saratoga Sun, March 24, 1960 *** Dave Edington looked up at a plaque at Saratoga High School holding the names of 31 state wrestling champions. He scratched his grey goatee, and pointed towards a name at the top of the list. "Yep, there I am," he said It was him - even if his name was spelled wrong...

There were not enough to play Bingo this week. Because of the holiday, there was no Bridge this week as well. There were six of us here for the movie, “Nut Job”. We all enjoyed popcorn and just relaxed. We had a big turnout for our Hawaiian shirt day. It was fun to see all the different colored shirts. One even had a Hawaiian hat. Several of the ladies wore there leis as well. I think they enjoyed it. It was good to have Jack Riddick up here Friday. He and Curt Campbell had a very close excursion last Friday night.
