  • Tensions flare at fire meeting

    Max Miller|Sep 8, 2016

A mix of anger, gratitude, resignation and curiosity was aswirl in the air of the Grand Encampment Opera House Sept. 1. About 75 people packed into the historic building for an informational presentation on the Beaver Creek and Broadway Fires burning south of Encampment, and tension was rife among some attendees. Fire-fighting officials came out in force for the meeting. The four main presenters of the evening were Operations Section Chief John Giller, Brush Creek District Ranger Melanie Fullman...

  • From plugging bullet holes to plugging into the Valley

    FW Broschart|Sep 8, 2016

Bob Keel, 31, may be a self-described "adrenaline junkie" who loves the fast-paced action of the night shift at an urban Emergency Room, but that has not stopped him from becoming the newest healthcare provider at Platte Valley Medical Center in Saratoga. Even though he enjoys an adrenaline rush, he's also a family man who grew up in a small town, and the allure of hanging up his ER scrubs in favor of a more bucolic life in the Valley was too much to pass up. The newly-minted physician's...

  • Copper Days shining up for 22nd year

    Max Miller|Sep 8, 2016

With summer winding down, Encampment is throwing one last outdoor festival before locals hole back up and the snowbirds again fly south to warmer climes. Sept. 10 and 11, the 22nd annual Copper Days tractor festival will be coming to the south Valley, and the weekend will feature several varieties of fun. The heart of the festivities, of course, will center around the tractors. Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in the Encampment Riverside Lions Club Arena on WYO 70, things kick off with "Tractors on...

  • Dancing between raindrops

    Keith McLendon, Retro Blog|Sep 8, 2016

The west is a dry place. I know this is a shocking revelation to those who live here and I apologize for intruding on your blissful unawareness. Coming from the coastal south, I was used to thunderstorms though. Sorry, that should be Thunderstorms with a capital “T.” Down there, rainfall would last literally weeks—with the occasional hurricane to break the monotony. Somehow the west still gets hurricane-force winds but a storm might only last 15 minutes … and you can dance between drops if you...

  • In 'puppy love' with Saratoga

    Sep 8, 2016

City of Saratoga: I am writing to tell you how much we enjoyed Saratoga even though we do not fish. We sashayed along the “downtown” streets taking in the sights and enjoying delicious cuisine in several restaurants; did a little shopping; dropped into Hack’s Tackle for a three-hour boat ride down the Platte River with Pat as our guide who pointed out the numerous bald eagles, furry minks, and other two-legged and four-legged wildlife only Pat could spot and identify instantly; we went to Mass on Saturday afternoon at St. Ann’s Church; and, se...

    FW Broschart|Sep 8, 2016

A new program run by the Carbon County Sheriff’s Department will help residents quickly find loved ones that wander off. The program, Project Lifesaver, provides tracking bracelets to people with Down’s Syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease, brain injuries or other similar cognitive disorders who may wander off and become lost, according to a press release issued by the sheriff’s department. The bracelet emits a signal every second, 24 hours per day according to the release by the sheriff’s department. Once the department is notified that a person has...
