  • Rebranding Saratoga?

    DRon Campbell|Aug 29, 2024

For nearly 100 years "Where the Trout Leap in Main Street" has been Saratoga's unofficial slogan. At the August 20 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council, however, newly appointed Carbon County Visitors’ Council (Discover Carbon County Wyoming) representative Ellie Dana-Raymer appeared to suggest the town should explore changing the brand of Saratoga. “Do you want to change your brand,” asked Dana-Raymer. “Cindy Loose talks about what’s the brand of the town. For many decades, it’s been ‘where...

    Richard Espinoza|Aug 29, 2024

Commitment to education in the classroom was the biggest factor for Saratoga Elementary School 3rd grade teacher Heather Strannigan’s recognition as this year’s Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) Teacher of the Year. Strannigan graduated from Saratoga Middle High in 2014 and has taught at Saratoga Elementary School for seven years. “When I was in high school, I had an opportunity to be a student aide in a kindergarten class here at Saratoga Elementary School,” Strannigan said. “It gav...

  • Give Kindness And Make A New Friend

    Richard Espinoza|Aug 29, 2024

The new school year is now here and I would like to take this time to reach out to both students and parents about the importance of making a new friend. When I first moved to Wyoming, I was scared to make new changes in my life. I wanted to know if people would be kind to me or not. Then I discovered how kind and friendly the people in the Platte Valley are. Every morning when I go to work, some stranger would say good morning to me. Whenever I go shopping some people would say hello to me and...

  • Look before you leap

    Saratoga Sun Editorial|Aug 29, 2024

There’s an old adage which says “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” We believe this applies to the unofficial slogan for Saratoga, “Where the trout leap in main street,” which has been in use for nearly a century. Borrowed from a 1927 article of the same name by Outdoor Living Magazine writer Billy O’Neil, it’s been a fitting slogan for our town, which is bisected by the North Platte River. For nearly a century, this slogan has been a source of community pride for Saratoga and for good reason. The North Platte River is a blue ribbon fishery an... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor: No Pickleball At Cost of Kathy Glode Park

    Aug 29, 2024

To the Editor: While I fully support more recreational facilities in Saratoga, I believe the destruction of a frequently used public park to construct a half million dollar Pickleball facility for 25 or so people would be a significant misuse of public resources. If public property is to be used to construct the facility, perhaps the now vacant property adjacent to the Community Garden would be a better location. Given the longterm failure of the Town to construct the Never Forget Park, no public funds should be expended to construct a...

  • Letters to the Editor: 'Where the Trout Leap in Main Street' is Saratoga's Slogan

    Aug 29, 2024

Editor, The last thing the town of Saratoga needs is to throw away its nearly century old slogan of “Where the Trout Leap in Main Street” and start all over again! Read on and I’ll tell you why.—Dick Perue A news item in the March 4, 1927 issue of “The Wyoming Eagle” notes: “In an editorial, ‘The Saratoga Sun’ declares that the city now has a slogan, it being the title of a short story written about the city and its surrounding territory as a resort.” (Author's note--I selected this out-of-town article to show that the new 1927 motto drew sta...

  • Letters to the Editor: Kiwanis Calls for Parade Etiquette

    Aug 29, 2024

Editor, As the festivities of yet another fun filled July 4th become a recent memory, we would like to commend those who do the work behind all the events that we have living in this wonderful little Saratoga town. Many come farther distances to enjoy the patriotism, friendliness and relaxed time that Saratoga offers. With that being said, the Kiwanis group has set up for its annual Bake Sale on the corner where our beloved Teense is set to officiate the parade as it turns the corner from Highway 130 to Bridge Avenue. This has been an easy...

  • Living On Purpose: Hearing is one thing, obeying is another

    Dr. William F. Holland|Aug 29, 2024

Having the opportunity to be engaged in a constant dialogue with Christ is more than just a hope. It can happen just the same as when we sit at our kitchen table and have an enjoyable conversation with a friend. And how is this possible? Because He’s real the same as you and I are real. Remember that old song, “My God is real, for I can feel Him in my soul?” If you believe He has spoken to people before, why can’t He speak to you? God communicates to us in our conscience, by providence, teachers, and most importantly through His holy word. We r...

  • Election results dampen conversation on school maintenance funding

Hannah Shields, Wyoming Tribune Eagle Via Wyoming News Exchange|Aug 29, 2024

CHEYENNE — It’s been 15 years since the Wyoming Legislature last revised its funding formula for school maintenance and repairs, and one state official said an adjustment is long overdue. But after a primary election set the stage for the Wyoming Freedom Caucus, a far-right group of hardline Republicans, to take control of the lower chamber in November, at least one lawmaker questions how well a bill that appropriates $43 million in major maintenance funds will do in the next legislative session. The Legislature’s Select Committee on Schoo...

  • PBS creates civics lessons for teachers

Allison Allsop, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Aug 29, 2024

CASPER — Less than 25% of eighth graders are proficient in civics, and PBS is trying to combat that. In partnership with GBH, which is the primary PBS station out of Boston, PBS LearningMedia has put together a collection of civics resources, lesson plans and activities for primary and secondary education teachers. “The new collection will draw on media to engage students, spark their interest in civics, and promote the active learning of skills by connecting the basic principles from the nation’s founding documents to issues they care about...

  • Local experts say law, ethics guide real estate market

Carrie Haderlie, The Sheridan Press Via Wyoming News Exchange|Aug 29, 2024

SHERIDAN — For many Wyomingites, buying a home is one of the biggest decisions of their lives, but the real estate world can be one with a steep learning curve. A first-time homeowner may wonder the difference between a real estate agent and a Realtor, or the difference between a buyer's agent and a seller's agent. Another may wonder what guarantee they have that a listing will accurately reflect the home they visit. And although rare, cases like the Gillette Realtor accused of forging s...

  • Custer's Eight Seconds to Victory

    Richard Espinoza|Aug 29, 2024

A whole lotta bull was on display at the 24th Annual Saratoga Bullfest as thirty of the best riders competed on August 24 to be this year’s winner. Each bull rider gave it their all and then some, but it would be Riverton’s Marty Custer who would walk away with the coveted Bullfest Spurs. “I have been here many years and never had a good shot at it,” Custer said. “I was going hard all summer and it feels good to finally win at Bullfest.” Custer said his work to prepare for bull riding is a...
