  • Small town, big city problems

    Joshua Wood|Aug 11, 2021

“In the short time I’ve worked here, I’ve had over 25 drug arrests. I don’t know how many shifts that is (but) I average one a night, some nights I average two drug arrests.” Less than two months after joining the Saratoga Police Department, new officer Justin Brown had sobering news for the Saratoga Town Council on August 3. With a background in both military and paramilitary, Brown was hired by the governing body following months of private and public discussions with Chief Ken Lehr about the...

  • Masks not required in schools

    Joshua Wood|Aug 11, 2021

Last year, Wyoming students who returned to school for in-person learning were required to wear masks. This year, Governor Mark Gordon has signaled no such requirement will be issued. The announcement comes as the Cowboy State sees active cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) top more than 1,000 for the first time since February 2021 and confirmed cases of the delta variant continue to rise. In Carbon County, there were 39 active cases of COVID-19 as of August 9 with 16 new cases and 29 total... Full story

  • Here, there and everywhere

    Joshua Wood|Aug 11, 2021

Is it just me or did this summer fly by at the speed of light? I’m struggling to process the fact school begins in less than two weeks—August 23—let alone the fact July 4 was a month ago and we’ve just survived Carbon County Fair week. How Mike Armstrong and I were able to make it through this past week with our sanity, mostly, I have no idea. We’re just covering the event, I can’t even begin to think of the sheer amount of work it takes to organize the Carbon County Fair. Honestly, my hats off...

  • 20 U.S. Senators attended  Enzi funeral – unprecedented

    Bill Sniffin|Aug 11, 2021

Friday’s funeral service for former U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi left no doubt about the amazingly high regard in which he was held in by his fellow U. S. senators. He was loved and respected by his Senate colleagues as he was loved and respected by the people he represented here in the Cowboy State. Some 20 U.S. senators traveled to the isolated county seat of Campbell Country in northeast Wyoming to celebrate the life of their friend. Enzi died July 26 from complications of a bicycle accident. He had retired in January after representing Wyoming in t...

  • HART plans for future beds

    Mike Armstrong|Aug 11, 2021

The Hanna Agricultural Resource Team (HART) met on July 20 at the Hanna Market to go over what the organization could still achieve while the weather was good. The members of HART have had to be flexible with what they could accomplish with their beds since they are not in a permanent location. The community garden had been moved from its location at property owned by Carbon County School District No. 2 to HART member Chris Karns’ residence temporarily for this summer. C.J. Mahon, the c...

  • Representing the South

    Joshua Wood|Aug 11, 2021

For four years, Saratoga Panther fans have watched Teegan Love take to the basketball court wearing the purple and gold while Encampment Tigers fans have watched Dalton Peterson don the red and black. On July 24, however, the two Valley athletes donned the same uniform; the black and gold of the south team for the Wyoming Coaches Association (WCA) Boys All-Star Basketball Game. For fans of Valley basketball, it was likely a dream come true to watch the two play together. "It was a ton of fun,"...

  • Town sees more turnover

    Joshua Wood|Aug 11, 2021

The Town of Saratoga is in search of a full-time recreation director following the resignation of Lisa Burton on August 3. Mayor Creed James read an email from Burton, who was not in attendance, announcing her resignation as recreation director at the August 3 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council. Burton’s resignation comes as the governing body continues its search for a treasurer and a planning and zoning officer. Burton bids farewell When James read the email from Burton announcing her r...

  • Think safe before you clean

    Mike Armstrong|Aug 11, 2021

Jo Walliser had an unpleasant discovery as she opened a box containing clothes donated to Bridge Street Bargains. Mixed in with the clothing was a dead mouse. Walliser immediately threw the box out and did not touch the garments. This was a smart precaution. The threat posed by rodents to both our health and property is significant. Rodents invade an estimated 21 million homes in the U.S. every winter, and an infestation can cause more than just a headache for homeowners. The real concern is...
