“I was there when they put it in, so I guess I oughta be there when they open it up,” local historian Dick Perue said, while wearing a printing smock Saturday morning. Perue was referencing a time capsule sealed inside the cornerstone of the Grand Encampment Museum (GEM) Doc Cullerton building 49 years ago when the building was dedicated. In celebration of GEM’s 50th anniversary, that time capsule was opened up Saturday morning in front of crowd of around 150 that turned out for the occasion. Th...

The trainings are intended to foster gun safety, safe shooting habits and to give the public an opportunity to train for self-defense shooting, John Russo, one of the instructors leading the training sessions, said. The class will offer some shooters an opportunity to learn a new way of shooting that they may not be familiar with, Russo said, and it will ensure that people learn defensive training in a...

At an August 3 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council, Acting Police Chief Robert Bifano had a mixed bag of developments to report to the council and public. About five citizens were in attendance at the proceedings. On the positive side, Bifano said that a suspect had admitted to committing a recent spate of vehicle vandalism in the Valley. “Last Thursday, we had six vehicle windows smashed out with a baseball bat,” Bifano told the room. He said a suspect had been caught and confessed to the cri...

A modest crowd showed up Saturday at the Whistle Pig Saloon on Saratoga’s South Side for a fundraiser to benefit the Saratoga Volunteer Fire Department. The event was hosted by the Whistle Pig, and culminated in an auction of items donated by local businesses and individuals. There was also a 50/50 raffle with half going to the fire department and the other half going to the winning ticket purchaser. The auction was led by Teense Willford who encouraged—and often cajoled—bar patrons into purchasing items. “If you want firefighters to come wh...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Aug 10, 2016

Editor, Are you tired of waking up to smoke in our valley? Tired of having your eyes water, your nose run, a foul taste in your mouth, and our valley obscured by smoke? Tired of millions of dollars being spent on mega-fires that could have been much less severe and much fewer, had responsible Forest Management been done? Tired of hearing that these fires are just nature’s way of replenishing itself, and that it is good for the resource? Tired of hearing that not much can be (or could have been) done to prevent these conflagrations? Tired of h...

Though he says “Economic diversity really does not come from one elected official,” Casner offers some ideas for broadening Wyoming’s job market. Providing natural gas pipelines to the communities of Dixon, Encampment, Elk Mountain, Riverside and Savery would...
