  • Sorry, Your Connection Has Been Interrupted

    Richard Espinoza|Aug 1, 2024

On July 18, customers with Union Wireless in the Platte Valley experienced a service outage which lasted approximately two hours. The internet, cellular and phone service outage appears to have impacted some business more than others. Scott Duke, interim CEO at the North Platte Valley Medical Center, said the service outage did not disrupt the hospital's operations a whole lot. “The hospital has redundant backup wireless and the backup wireless kicked in so we didn't completely shut down,” sai...

  • WHAT is good for the soul

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Aug 1, 2024

“When you can make so many people happy, it’s good for your heart.” The sun had long set on Roger Burau’s property, home for The WHAT Festival for the third consecutive year, when he took to the stage on Saturday evening. For the past 48 hours, acres of his land had been transformed into a miniature community of music, camping and food trucks with cliffs to the north and the river to the south. As he stood on stage, in the spotlight for just a few minutes, he was greeted with cheers, applaus...

  • Biden's withdrawal: Presidential character in action

    David Adler, Ph.D.|Aug 1, 2024

The possibilities of the Office of the Presidency, the Framers of the Constitution knew, would depend in large measure on the character of its occupant. The Presidency was constrained by the terms of the Constitution and the doctrine of checks and balances, designed to temper the vaulting ambition of future chief executives who might imitate those in European countries that aggrandized power for their own interests. But the presidency was also empowered to perform the responsibilities of the...

  • Wyoming still misunderstands Gillette

    Jake Goodrick, Gillette News Record|Aug 1, 2024

Wyoming misunderstands Gillette. That was apparently clear when the task force in charge of picking a site for a state shooting complex opted against the more site-ready, cost-effective plan in Campbell County for what amounts to the predictable, and in the eyes of the ones in power, more quintessentially Wyoming location of Cody. Gillette has a site picked out, with ample space, local buy-in and available infrastructure to support it. Cody has natural beauty, and a lot of question marks. More importantly, Park County has task force members...

  • What Role Did the Episcopal Church Play in Indian Boarding Schools?

Rev. Canon Bobbe Fitzhugh, Episcopal Church in Wyoming|Aug 1, 2024

At the July 2024 General Convention of The Episcopal Church, an important resolution was unanimously adopted by the body. As a member of the Wyoming Episcopal Church Deputation to this Convention, I was proud to support Resolution C032 – “A Prayer to Remember the Innocents.” This resolution expresses the church’s remorse for its role “in the irreparable harm suffered by Indigenous children who attended Indigenous boarding and residential schools in the 1800s and 1900s and acknowledges that the effect of that harm carries on in boarding...

  • Living on Purpose: The church equips Christians for ministry

    Dr. William F. Holland|Aug 1, 2024

I’ve been in church all my life and I know people who believe that attending an assembly fulfills the majority of their Christian obligations. Somewhere down through the centuries the idea of the Ekklesia being a boot-camp to train soldiers and a school to teach disciples how to engage in spiritual warfare and develop their ministries, became watered down into an easy country club lifestyle of comfort and pride. The word Ekklesia appears in the New Testament 114 times and is often translated as church or assembly. It means to be called out b...

  • Party leaders comment on recent actions by Barrasso, Hageman

Hannah Shields, Wyoming Tribune Eagle Via Wyoming News Exchange|Aug 1, 2024
    1

CHEYENNE — Was U.S. Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., justified in chasing down former U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle at the Republican National Convention, days after former President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated? Was Wyoming Congresswoman Harriet Hageman’s description of Vice President Kamala Harris as a “DEI hire” a full-blown racist comment? Nearly a dozen Wyoming Republican and Democratic political candidates and party leaders weighed in on the recent actions and comments by two of the Cowboy State’s three federal l...

  • What it takes to be financially 'self sufficient' in Wyoming

Sophie Lamb, Jackson Hole News&Guide Via Wyoming News Exchange|Aug 1, 2024

JACKSON — A single mother with two children has to make $45 an hour to be “self-sufficient” in Teton County. The Wyoming Women’s Foundation’s 2024 Self Sufficiency Report reveals such a wage will cover a family’s basic expenses — transportation, groceries, health care, child care, taxes and housing (assuming rent is only $1,700 a month) — without room for most extraneous purchases. When the foundation last released its report, in 2020, a three-person family in Teton County had to make $39 an hour. In 2005, it was $18 an hour. “Yes, we all kn...

Finn Rolseth, a former Saratoga Panther, closed the final chapter of his high school career on July 20. Rolseth, who graduated from Saratoga Middle High School earlier this year, played in the Wyoming Coaches Association All-Star Game at Casper College. Wyoming Boys South fell to Wyoming Boys North, 80-69. Rolseth said the all-star game was a big challenge because it was fast-paced. “The biggest adjustment between 1A and the all-star game was the speed,” Rolselth said. “Everything’s faster....
