  • Council Member Spaulding Resigns

    Mike Armstrong|Jul 28, 2022

All council members and mayor were in attendance at the 6 p.m. regularly scheduled meeting on July 19 at the Saratoga Town Hall. A public hearing was held before the meeting began. The hearing was about a land swap of town land appraised at $62,500 for traded property valued at $45,000. The majority of the public made clear it was not a good idea to go ahead with the trade. A few people felt a major donation that was being offered to park by the land owner, made the deal even. It was argued the...

  • Rendezvous mountain men have skills

    Virginia Parker|Jul 28, 2022

The 2022 Sierra Madre Muzzleloaders Mountain Man Rendezvous was in full swing last weekend. I spoke with Les Daniels about the inception of the mountain man rendezvous for this area. He told me Marion Baker had taken over The Brass Rail out north of town and was a huge catalyst in getting the muzzleloaders started. Frank Horvath, Gary Millhouse and many others including Les gave the Sierra Madre Muzzleloaders life. Although they had a very limited shooting range, they enjoyed their competitions....

  • Encampment Forum

    Virginia Parker|Jul 28, 2022

The Encampment Opera House hosted a forum for the four candidates of the Encampment mayoral race on Sunday evening. Jeb Steward was the mediator. The forum was attended by approximately thirty residents of Encampment. The four candidates are Greg Salisbury, incumbent; Matt Wagy, Shannon Fagan Craig and Brad Hebig. The candidates were at odds about a few items, but there seemed to be some common ground on others. Finishing the sewer and water projects are definitely a priority in all of their...

    Mike Armstrong|Jul 28, 2022

When Danny Burau, Saratoga resident and owner/founder of Firewater Public House opened back in 2017, he had set ideas on branding his new restaurant. A logo was created and he started making different t-shirts with his brand. Then he started thinking of little quips to go on the t-shirts, pins and hats he was creating. Firewater enjoyed instant success and customers started buying his retail merchandise. Then Burau hit a homerun with a phrase which customers liked immediately. "This is Wyoming,...

  • The man who started my reporting career

    Mike Armstrong|Jul 28, 2022

The other day I found a Rush CD when I was looking for something to listen to . It had been a gift from my buddy and former boss Keith McLendon. I put it on and had a blast of the past as I remembered him giving me this compilation CD of his favorite group. He had done it because I had told him one day, I didn’t really care for the group. It had been my ex-wife’s favorite band and I guess there was a little bit of bias against the band because of that. Plus honestly, I just never got why eve...

  • Why Rodeo?

    Virginia Parker|Jul 28, 2022

From the 1800's to present day, raw country was developed and managed by ranchers and farmers. The word rodeo owes its roots to a Spanish word, rodear, meaning "to surround". Although ranching has been around since the Middle Ages, it was in Spain and Portugal that raising and tending to cattle in masses appears to have originated. Herding, roundups, cattle drives and breeding all came from this area. For approximately 100 years throughout the 18th century, Spain was sending missionaries to the... Full story
