For the past few years, Saratoga Days has drawn people from near and far to East Bridge Avenue for a Independance Day street dance headlined by the likes of Ned LeDoux, Chancy Williams and, this year, Neal McCoy. While Saratoga Day is, arguably, one of the biggest parties all year for Saratoga it was relatively uneventful as far as a law enforcement response. “This was my first year being with the Saratoga Police Department for Saratoga Days. I have participated in the past, I’ve been aro...
“In one way or another, we’re going to destroy things,” Lonnie Pacheco told the Carbon County Commissioners last week. “That’s the whole point of the Raw Town Riot Demolition Derby.” In his third year of running Rawlins’ demolition derby, Pacheco said he’s trying a few new approaches to the event. One of those changes is a rule change the drivers voted on at the end of the derby last year that may attract drivers from outside Carbon County and Wyoming. Known as Stirrin’ Dirt Rules, named for the promotion that hosts several derby events in U...
“We’re not selling a cowboy hat, we’re selling a lifestyle.” This seems to be the unofficial motto for Sophia Borg, owner of Palomino Hat Bar which recently opened inside of StrongTower Designs in Saratoga. On July 8, StrongTower Designs celebrated its 10th Anniversary and the grand opening of Borg’s business. Western Roots, Southern Charm With her southern drawl and charm, Borg may seem like a transplant from the south but she is no stranger to Saratoga. The milliner, in fact, has deep root...
Saratoga’s next blood drive with Vitalant is on Tuesday, July 18th from 12:00 pm to 5:30 pm at St. Ann’s Parish Hall. The drive is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and will include a slice of fresh, home baked pie for all donors. The demand for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients. It’s important that people remember to take some time off out of their busy schedules to donate to help maintain a safe and plentiful supply of blood for our area hospitals. Blood donors truly are heroes, because their...
Congresswomen Harriet Hageman visited Saratoga the evening of June 28, part of a 14 stop swing through the Cowboy State during the holiday recess. Speaking to a supportive audience of about 75 people, gathered in a meeting room at the Platte Valley Community Center, Representative Hageman offered an overview of several legislative issues at the Federal level, and their general impact on her Wyoming Constituents. These included two important matters on native lands throughout this region;...
Just when you think you have a handle on all the way scammers will reach out to try and separate you from your money they up their game. Recently, there are reports of scammers using local business names. Rocky Mountain Power has reported scammers are calling and contacting customers seeking immediate payment to avoid disconnection. RMP will not ask you to make payments with a pre-paid credit card but most of all they do not contact their customers in that way. RMP suggests rather than giving your account number to the caller, ask them to give...
In the past year, I’ve discovered my inner chef and it’s something I’ve come to really enjoy. Of course, it isn’t something that happened right away. In fact, I’ve made periodic voyages into the culinary world in the past and learned a number of lessons along the way. To be honest, I’ve always been a fan of food, though it may not have appeared as such when I was a child. While I inhaled childhood favorites such as pizza, hamburgers and hotdogs I would struggle with foods like poor man’s strogan...
“You just can’t see him from the road”, a line from one of my favorite Chris LeDoux songs is true of so many that live and work in this area we call home. Cradled in the arms of the Medicine Bow Mountains and the Sierra Madres the history of the North Platte Valley is brought to life with a spotlight on those we can’t see from the road. Summer events include Woodchoppers Jamboree, Grand Encampment’s Cowboy Gathering, Living History Days at Grand Encampment Museum and the Sierra Madre Muzzleloa...

The usual number of accidents incident to the haying season have occurred recently, and several local people are tied up in slings as a result. Each year, due probably to the unusual amount of team work and other handling of horse at this season, a number of persons meet with more serious injuries. Aside from the tragic death of P. A. Fields, which was the result of a hay-field accident, and which is reported in another column, A. T. Fausett is confined to his home by injuries received a few days ago when he was thrown from a wagon in a...
GILLETTE — The process to revise what areas of the state are designated as core areas for the protection of sage-grouse is very much a work in progress, and a lot of work is yet to be done. That was the message the sage-grouse Implementation Team tried to get across during a meeting in Lander last week. When the proposed revisions to the sage-grouse core areas were released to the public, many ranchers were upset because of the perceived lack of transparency and communication on a decision that would potentially affect their future revenues. T...
JACKSON — While Teton County saw no search and rescues over the Fourth of July holiday, one neighboring county reported four fatalities. Grand Teton National Park rangers on Tuesday responded to a death on Wolfs Head Mountain in Fremont County. Teton County Search and Rescue originally received the call to assist Fremont County in the rescue. That call was then sent to Grand Teton National Park, which flew three Jenny Lake rangers in a helicopter just before 11 a.m. Valerie Gohlke, public affairs officer for Grand Teton National Park, said F...
The musical group Rascals Flats in their hit song Maybury laments that, "Sunday was a day of rest/ Now its one more day for progress. If you have not guessed by now, this column will deal with the topic of sabbath rest. The Fourth Commandment is, "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy" (Exodus 20:8). The Exodus version of the Ten Commandments takes up a total of 15 verses. As we examine the Fourth Commandment, we see that it takes up five of those verses. One-third of the verses dedicated...

Experts point out that hunger is not just a product of such crises, it can perpetuate more hunger and regional instability, especially in areas already experiencing v...
