  • Waste, air, water

    Joshua Wood|Jul 10, 2019

The most recent meeting of the Saratoga Town Council on July 2 lasted just under an hour and, while it seemed abbreviated compared to previous meetings, the council still held much discussion on a variety of topics. The recently approved one-year contract with the Upper Platte River Solid Waste Disposal District (UPRSWDD), appointments to the Saratoga Airport Advisory Board, the third reading of Ordinance No.855 and issues with hiring a new planning and zoning officer were all subjects of...

  • Billing, hazard

    Joshua Wood|Jul 10, 2019

Two major points of discussion during the July 3 meeting of the Upper Platte River Solid Waste Disposal District (UPRSWDD) were centered around the topic of a centralized billing program currently being pursued by the district. The first involved discussion with former UPRSWDD Chairperson Alysson Sneddon and the second was in reference to comments made by Councilmember Steve Wilcoxson during the July 2 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council. Bill Me UPRSWDD Chairman Randy Raymer informed the rest...

  • It is great to live in America

    Mike Armstrong|Jul 10, 2019

As the 4th of July rolls by, this is one of my favorite times to be in Wyoming. For that matter, the United States. But honestly, the 4th of July feels special, like it should, celebrating in small town Wyoming. Does it really get any better than celebrating America’s birthday with neighbors and friends in a state that understands the pioneer spirit and what the United States has accomplished since its independence? I truly love celebrating America’s birthday in Carbon County more than any pla...

  • Fee use explained

    Jul 10, 2019

Dear Editor, The letter from Jake and Nicky Shoales of Spokane, Washington—re: their experience at the “city” supported hot springs, while wonderful, reported no working water fountains plus slippery steps. Neither condition reflects well on the Town’s repair and maintenance nor its concern for the health and safety of residents and visitors. The Shoales suggested that landing fees be established for corporate jets and used to fund needed repair and maintenance. Obviously they were not aware that landing fees are already collected for transient...

  • Here comes the thunder

    Joshua Wood|Jul 10, 2019

"Other kids that live with their grandparents are able to help a lot more. One of my main chores is getting (fire)wood and it takes me maybe 15-30 minutes and, afterwards, I'll be in so much pain and just being able to help her has been a lot harder than it should be, at my age." For many people, life presents challenges at different times in their life. When it comes to 17-year-old Katie Russell, those challenges have been present since the fourth grade and continue today with two different chr...

  • A fifth of Firewater

    Joshua Wood|Jul 10, 2019

Summer in the Platte Valley is often highlighted with a variety of bands and musicians who come to the area to entertain locals and tourists alike. In keeping with that tradition, Firewater Public House (Firewater) held its inaugural Firewater Fifth. The restaurant, as regular customers are aware, is no stranger to hosting musical acts. When it came to the miniature music festival that took place on Friday evening, however, it was a dream come true for Danny Burau. "I've got goosebumps," said...

  • A rising tide lifts all boats

Stacy Crimmins, Saratoga - Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce|Jul 10, 2019

This phrase is a favorite of a local businessperson. He believes that if an individual business does well (raises the tide), then all of our businesses will do well. This concept has been the mission of economic and community development professionals across the nation. But there is only so much we can do. A strong local economy is also the responsibility of fellow business owners. I hear it all the time. Local business owners do not get the support they need from other local business owners. In fact, this is one reason businesses drop their...

  • Pie in July

    Staff Report|Jul 10, 2019

Ah summer! It’s finally here with vacations, floating, camping and barbecues. But it’s not fun if someone you love is in the hospital and there is no blood on the shelf. Here, in the southern part of Wyoming, it takes 500 people a week to donate blood to serve the 47 area hospitals in this region. One out of every 3 people will need blood during their lives but only one in 20 people regularly give blood. Saratoga’s next blood drive with United Blood Services is on Tuesday, July 16th from noon to 5:30 pm at St. Ann’s Parish Hall. The drive is sp...
