  • The cowboy life

    Staff Report|Updated Jun 28, 2016

The cowboy life is what identifies living in the West. It is not an easy life. The cowboy needs to know how to rope a calf, brand the calf without inflicting too much pain and learn water laws. Water rights in Wyoming can be confusing. Saturday, Mike Condict, along with his cousin, Reggie Thornburg will talk about water rights of the past, present and future, beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Saratoga Museum Pavilion. The two have been studying water law and work with 16 ranchers in the Platte Valley, the University of... Full story

  • Hand-Pulling Weeds: Effective or more work?

Abby Perry and Callie Kettner, University of Wyoming Extension Carbon County Office|Updated Jun 28, 2016

The ground is thawing, birds are chirping, and gardeners are hittin’ the flower beds. Little green guys push through the dirt surface; some are keepers and some have to go, but how? Is pulling unwanted weeds really the way to go, or will pulling them be a waste of time and simply increase the infestation? Understanding the weed’s growth cycle is important to understand how the weeds will respond to hand-pulling pressure. Annual plants complete their growth cycle in one year. Biennials complete their growth cycle in two yea... Full story

  • The final chapter

    Madeline Weiss|Updated Jun 28, 2016

We just ordered a new tent. It’s a really nice one, too, a good deal from Sierra Trading Post. It’s pretty heavy but it should be able to withstand just about any rafting trip, backcountry skiing excursion or camp in the woods. I got a new sleeping bag. I’m all set, just waiting to get a square aluminum dutch oven so I can make anything I want in a campfire. It’s probably not the best time for me to be making purchases like this, considering I’m leaving my job here at the pa... Full story

  • Budgeting time

    Max Miller|Updated Jun 28, 2016

A sleepy agenda and the necessity of reading several lengthy budgetary amendments verbatim may have kept attendance down at the June 21 Saratoga Town Council Meeting. Less than 10 citizens came to the proceedings, which finalized the town budget for Fiscal Year 2017 and saw the resignation of Glee Johnson from the Water and Sewer Joint Powers Board. Johnson has served on the board since October of 2014 and had a full year left in her three year term, which was set to expire... Full story

As of July 18, a fractious Carbon County Library System Board (CCLSB) will have one more position to fill. Morgan, who has served as director for a little over two months, submitted her resignation in absentia through a letter read aloud at the June 24 mee... Full story

  • DKRW disbands

    FW Broschart|Updated Jun 28, 2016

A proposed coal liquefaction plant south of Medicine Bow is no more, according to an email sent to the Wyoming Industrial Siting Council (ISC) by the project’s proponent, Houston-based DKRW, Inc. The beleaguered project met its end after DKRW decided market conditions were not favorable to continue construction of the coal-liquefaction plant which would have turned coal into gasoline using a series of chemical reactions called the Fischer-Tropsch process that was developed in Germany in the 1920s. Coal liquefaction has b... Full story
