A pair of fatal incidents over the weekend marred the beginning of the summer recreation season for the Platte River Valley. Friday evening, a 26-year-old man drowned in the Encampment River after being ejected from a raft that was floating the river. The next day, a 13-year-old boy died near Ryan Park after the ATV he was operating struck a tree. Both incidents are under investigation by authorities. The Grand Encampment Opera Company will return to the stage this week with its annual Jamboree Melodrama performance of “Mine, All Mine or From Ghost Town to Kaboom Town.” The drama, by Denise K. Buhr and produced in conjunction with Colorado-based Pioneer Drama Services, will be performed at the Grand Encampment Opera House at 7 p.m. June 14, and June 16-17. Bryon Russell, a former Utah Jazz small forward, is coming to visit the Hanna Recreation Center at 1 p.m. on June 15 in coordination with the Utah Jazz Junior Basketball recreational program in Carbon County. Russell, a native of California, attended college at Long Beach State University from 1990 to 1993. Eventually the school retired his number 32. H. Richard Farr January 1, 1943 – June 7, 2017 H. Richard (Dick) Farr of Loveland, Colorado, formerly of Greeley, passed away June 7, 2017 at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver after suffering a severe stroke June 4th. He was born in Greeley, on January 1, 1943 to W. D. and Judy Farr. Dick graduated from Greeley Central High School in 1961. The June 6 Saratoga Town Council meeting began with approval of the agenda, previous minutes and the town’s bills. The council briefly discussed a fundraising car wash for the speech team to be held June 24 in the town parking lot. Kiwanis celebrated their 27th birthday May 18 at the Saratoga Resort, members and guests heard a history program by Saratoga Museum director Mikayla Larrow. The $400 Scholarship winner from Encampment High School was Ariana Mckinney while Katie Loose was the winner from Saratoga High School. During Mother’s Day at the Saratoga Care Center, 17 resident ladies received a carnation flower for their special day. The Riverside Council met Thursday to appoint representatives to two Carbon County boards, renew liquor licenses and go over the camping situation when the Whatfest event comes to town in late July. Riverside Hospitality (Bear Trap) and Mangy Moose Riverside L.L.C. (Mangy Moose) had their liquor license renewed. On Thursday at 7 p.m. Encampment Town Council met to approve a new representative for the Carbon County Visitors Council and filled three vacancies with the Planning Commission. The May 2017 payroll, contracted liabilities and the monthly regular bills totaled $38,728.29 was approved to be paid by the council. $11,000 was approved to purchase the mosquito chemical for fogging along with $1,600 for fireworks. “No tag, no repair,” says Ralph Hicks who is behind the program Bikes for Kids which gives children donated and repaired bikes. Bikes for Kids takes a contributed bicycle and will either recondition it or use the bike for spare parts. Hicks says the program is sponsored by St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Saratoga with financial support from The Foundation for the Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming. Saturday marked the first time both the towns of Hanna and Elk Mountain introduced community garage sales. Hanna started at 8 a.m. with the Hanna Recreation Center being the place to see objects from a few families at various tables outside the center.
