  • Town set to enforce junk ordinance

    Liz Wood|Jun 10, 2015

Don Sherrod has found he is not in a very popular position. He has been appointed by the Saratoga Town Council to start work on cleaning up areas in the town of Saratoga. Sherrod told the council June 2 that he would like to have someone from the council to fill out the board that he and Randy Raymer are serving on for the clean up. The ordinance passed by the Saratoga Town Council in 2010 has a lot of leeway, Sherrod told the council. Sherrod asked the council for permission to proceed to...

    Sarah Hutchins|Jun 10, 2015

Recently, a Legislative Act was passed in the Wyoming State Legislature that has been featured in the national press — relating to a tougher stance for citizens trespassing while collecting data — whether knowingly or unknowingly. The legislation set stauncher punishment for the public that “enters onto open land for the purpose of collecting resource data.” “Open land”, according to the legislation, “means land outside the exterior boundaries of any incorporated city, town, subdivision.” The de...

  • Clearing the cobwebs, part I

    Keith McLendon|Jun 10, 2015

Over the years I have kept notes about things that I find interesting or might want to write a story about. I have files with several half-finished and half-baked tales (including one about my cats that I can’t believe I haven’t finished yet). I have stacks of articles for research into even more narratives and then … and then I have the scribbles on assorted napkins, thoughts scrawled on scraps, and musings that festoon (I LOVE that word) my desktop calendar pad. It is the latter I will be co...

  • What is a nuisance?

    Staff Report|Jun 10, 2015

The nuisance ordinance is starting to take life, again. It is a touchy subject and the ordinance garners a lot of discussion in the Saratoga Sun office. There are lots of arguments for or against the ordinance and its enforcement. We are a town that depends on tourism, especially in the summer. Many of our business owners depend on tourism to supplement their businesses the rest of the year. Should concerned residents who think the town looks “trashy” be able to tell other residents what they should do to their property to make it look mor...

    Liz Wood|Jun 10, 2015

Green refuse is handled differently than solid waste because it can be burned, Raymer explained to the audience in attendance at the Landfill Board meeting. Ron Munson, the contractor for the landfill in Saratoga and the transfer station in...

The Saratoga Ranch Rodeo is in its second year and is organized by Siara Hatch who wanted to find a way to get involved in the community and have a fun event that exhibited the ranching way of life. • A Branding new day

    Liz Wood|Jun 10, 2015

A distinct smell fills the air as the branding iron singes the hair on a calf. The calf screams out, then lays still. It may look like torture to the untrained eye, but branding day is an organized way to take care of all the calves’ needs at once; two injections, castration – when needed, clipping the ear, and putting the brand on the calf. Every now and then a calf needs to be dehorned too. Branding day at the Alden Condict Ranch brought neighbors from all over the Valley to help brand 250...

  • Saratoga's 'Hydro-pizza garden'

    Sarah Hutchins|Jun 10, 2015

Saratoga Elementary School won a grant in October for a hydroponic system, and recently, the school reaped the ultimate reward — eating what they grew. A hydroponic system, according to Adelaide Myers, library aide at Saratoga Elementary, is a medium to grow plants that doesn’t use soil. The vegetation can be angled at almost any position; all that matters is that it is receiving light and water. “And basically it’s just some heavy-duty mesh we planted the seeds from little plugs. And we planted...

That could all change at state, Berger said, because everyone will be fighting to get to...
