  • Joint-dispatch workshop postponed

Kathleen Stinson for the Saratoga Sun|May 16, 2024

At the May 7 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council, Mayor Chuck Davis said the public hearing to consider whether to create a joint dispatch center to serve the sheriff’s department and the county municipalities set for May 13 was tabled for logistical reasons. “The council is working to get a date confirmed,” Davis said, referring to when to reschedule the meeting. Getting everyone’s schedules to agree had proven difficult. Police Chief Mike Morris said they have agreed “in principle” that the best way to create a joint dispatch center would be...

  • Sawdust in your blood

    Joshua Wood|May 16, 2024

When Saratoga Forest Management first began operations in 2012—operating the sawmill once owned by Louisiana Pacific—it was big news for two reasons. First, the sawmill had been closed since 2003 dealing a major blow to the local economy. Second, Saratoga Forest Management was processing the abundance of beetle-killed lodgepole pine. When newspapers descended upon Saratoga to report the news of the sawmill reopening, one of the people they spoke with was Orville Howe. Howe and eight of his broth...

  • Make a difference, run for office

    Joshua Wood|May 16, 2024

These days it may seem as if election cycles never end, but only bleed into one another. While it can be easy to get fatigued by the constant election rhetoric, the civic importance of elections shouldn’t be lost. This year is a presidential election and, in Wyoming, one senate seat and the lone congress seat are also on the ballot. Also on the ballot are a number of county and municipal offices. Three of the five seats on the Board of Carbon County Commissioners will be on the ballot this e...

  • Ghosting simply doesn't cut it

    David Peck|May 16, 2024

Pet peeve time here. Are you familiar with the communications concept known as ghosting? For the uninitiated, the word refers to an electronic communication during which one of the parties simply stops responding to a conversation or disappears from contact in the first place. I guess it could also refer to any communication, such as refusing to return a call or something like that. But for the young people out there, I have one thing to say: Don’t do it. At least if you want to get or keep a job. Let me tell you, there are few things in b...

  • Living on Purpose: Christ is interceding on your behalf today

    Dr. William F. Holland|May 16, 2024

Some individuals are healthier than others, but the uncomfortable facts reveal the human body is generally frail and vulnerable. I occasionally joke around with my Son-in-law about him being from another planet because he claims he’s never been sick, however, like the rest of us, there will come a day when something will go wrong. As a minister, I’ve seen my share of sickness and pain and it hurts me to see someone suffer. My father was a very sick man, and our family watched him go through years of agony. With my parents being faithful mem...

  • Jesus said, Blessed are the merciful…

Greg Snell, Pastor, First Baptist Church, Saratoga|May 16, 2024

We live in a world where it is easy to become coldhearted, unsympathetic, unresponsive, even unconcerned. We watch the results of natural catastrophes, war, and political violence, sometimes unfolding on a minute-by-minute live feed. In order to cope with the pain and suffering that goes on around us, we have learned to not allow ourselves to dwell very long on the troubles of this world. In the process, we have become almost indifferent, merciless, or one might even say hardened. How does Jesus want us to respond? Jesus said in the Sermon on...
