By H.B. Lawson On Friday afternoon Deseret Health and Rehab Administrator, Anita Mills received a call from Carbon County Commissioner Sue Jones. Jones informed Mills of a call the commissioner's office had just had concerning the possible imminent closures of Saratoga's Deseret health care facility as well as the Rock Springs Deseret facility. Scholarship programs in the Platte Valley are most likely seeing an increase in applications this year. Saratoga Middle/High School (SMHS) counselor Dan Marquart has teamed up with SMHS history teacher Jason Williams, who is requiring his students to apply for 10 scholarships. It has been successful, Marquart said, because he is seeing more scholarship applications and handing out more transcripts than he has in the last several years. Completing scholarships can be a daunting experience for...
For the past four out of five years, Carbon County Emergency Management Coordinator John Zeiger has been preparing communities for floods in Carbon County. This year, there is not enough snowpack to generate significant flooding in Carbon County, according to Jim Fahey, hydrologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Even though the flood potential is low, Zeiger is still working on flood plans to meet requirements for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This...
When Gene Roddenberry pitched his idea for “Star Trek” to paramount pictures he called it “Wagon Train to the Stars”—a twist on a popular western television series in the 50s called “Wagon Train” which chronicled the drama of intrepid pioneers that ventured into the unknown mystery of the wild west. Roddenberry’s idea was that someday in the future there would be a next generation of explorers and frontiersmen that would set out across the vast expanse of space to homestead new worlds. In the...
Dear Editor: I want to give a very sincere “thank you” to so many people in the Saratoga-Encampment area, and even beyond, for all the kindness and friendship extended to my parents, Ardyce and Maynard Hoem, over the many years they lived and worked in the valley. They are certainly missed by the family, and I am sure there is someone out there today who would enjoy just one more visit with “Buck” about some work horses or rainbow trout, or lone last cup of coffee with Ardyce while visiting about a new quilt, or maybe about her varied experie...
Parents and teachers roped in the wee members of next year's kindergarten class during Saratoga Elementary's annual Kindergarten Round-up last Thursday. The matriculating pre-schoolers were brought in to meet with their kindergarten teachers. The future students were given an assessment by the kindergarten teachers who were on hand to check the preschoolers knowledge of basic shapes and colors before being given speech tests by Deborah Kimber and vision tests by various members of the...

It's not unusual to see bicyclers traveling through Saratoga, since the town is located on the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail. Unless it is in April. Two bicyclists stopped in Saratoga April 26 and were enjoying some craft beer at the Saratoga Resort and Spa. They really didn't want to bike out to Saratoga Lake Campground after they day they had. Kim and Vince Hytrek overheard them and offered them an option–camp in their backyard. The two young men gladly accepted. On April 27, Dan Riccio, of P...
Saratoga High School Senior Andrew Oiler topped the pole vault record set by Anthony Samson in 2012. Samson had broken the previous 21- year record in 2012 during state competition with a 12 foot 6 inch vault. Oiler's 12'8" pole vault took place on the home field during the Burt Willford Memorial Meet. Oiler tried to break his own record with a 13' pole vault. Oiler made three attempts and managed to clear the bar, but as he came down on the other side his chin clipped the bar. "I couldn't have...

Tuesday morning, it was business as usual at Deseret Health and Rehab. One glaring difference is that the phone is being answered Valley View Healthcare, which is the former name of the nursing home. The nursing home was built in 1975 by Kendall McBride and was operated by him and his sister Carolyn Vyvey for seven years. The Saratoga Lions Club had guaranteed the bond. If the bonds were not paid, the members of the Lions Club would personally be responsible for the loan, according to an...
