Recently, I have noticed some disturbing (to say the least) advertisements on television. Some advertisers are unnecessarily portraying their services as “good”, some are unintentionally putting themselves in the “evil” category, and more than a few come up as just plain ugly. ChristianMingle, an online dating site for Christians, uses the tagline, “Find God’s match for you”. While I have no problem with Christians finding a mate and concede that ChristianMingle’s service may indeed be a goo...
Art is a many splendored thing. Witness the full room collection of people at the recent school board meeting—no two people were wearing the same thing. Even Superintendent Bob Gates was adorned in fine fabrics, from his underwear and socks, to his sweater and tie. Art is texture, color, pattern and material, and it comes together in a visual explosion and feel. Be it art on a wall or the design of clothes and jewelry, art is everywhere. The room that held the meeting had floor tile with a design and laid in a pattern. The chairs had design a...
Josh Sandlian likes to think of science as a football game. “During the week, you are practicing concepts like throwing, catching and tackling,” Sandlian said. Those football skills are similar to math and language arts. For Sandlian, science is the opportunity for students to apply their math and language arts skills to real situations. “Friday night is the game,” he said. “Science is that football game. It lets kids show what they know.” As the first science facilitator in Carbon County Scho...
A group that has been supporting student athletes for years is in need of some help itself. The Saratoga High School Booster Club is short on people. “We have great financial support,” treasurer Jan Young said, “but we need bodies.” The Booster Club has been short of volunteers for several years now, and with President Gayle Batemen and Young stepping down, the group is shrinking more. “We only meet once a month and the meetings last around 45 minutes to an hour,” Young said. The next meetin...
When she first started wrestling, her presence on the mat was sometimes met with apprehension. Some boys would forfeit before the match started when faced with wrestling her. But Leah didn’t let being a girl and the opinions of others get in the way o...

Freshman Thatcher Spiering made the All State Wrestling team. His coach Jared Mason said it has been several years since a freshman made All State, the last to make it was Decker Hubbs. “The sky is the limit,” Mason said of Spiering’s wrestling ability. “He loves to wrestle and would do it 365 days a year I think, if he could.” That type of drive and determination is what it takes to be successful, Mason said. “The kids who are like this are state champions and go on to wrestle in college.” S...
Before Justin Irene wrestled his final match of his high school career, Hanna wrestling coach Lyle Richardson told him “Win or lose, you made All State Wrestling”. Irene broke the school record for num...
