  • A pretty sweet appointment

    Joshua Wood|Mar 24, 2021

The Town of Saratoga has finally filled a vital position in town hall as Mayor Creed James appointed a new town clerk on March 16. Since the resignation of former town clerk Suzie Cox effective December 31, 2020, the Saratoga Town Council has contracted Pam Paulson, former Town of Hanna treasurer, to aid treasurer Sammy Flohr and assistant clerk/treasurer Brenda Mistelske. Along with appointing a new clerk, the Saratoga Town Council also discussed a new repeater for the Saratoga Police...

  • Practical or political?

    Joshua Wood|Mar 24, 2021

For some, it may seem that one election cycle bleeds right into another especially as several current members of the Wyoming Legislature have made early announcements of running against Representative Liz Cheney in 2022. A piece of legislation currently in the Wyoming Senate, however, would add another election date to Wyoming’s calendar and create additional work for both the Secretary of State and county clerks throughout Wyoming. During their rescheduled March 18 meeting, the Board of C...

  • Repairing bridges

    Joshua Wood|Mar 24, 2021

Just two weeks after finding out about weight restrictions placed by the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) on a Highway 130 bridge, the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC) were informed of both short-term and long-term solutions to the issue. As was reported previously (see “A bridge not far enough” on page 1 of the March 10 Saratoga Sun), Jason Armbruster, district ranger for the Medicine Bow-Routte National Forest and Thuderbasin National Grassland, had approached the BOC...

  • Cary (Carroll Anthony) Pyle

    Mar 24, 2021

Cary (Carroll Anthony) Pyle passed peacefully in his home in Sun City West, Arizona, on March 17, 2021, surrounded by his loved ones. Cary was born December 23, 1948, in Kerrville, Texas to Ed and Mary Ann Pyle. In 1993, he met the love of his life, Judy. As a petroleum geologist, Cary loved to prospect and he spent many years as a volunteer firefighter in Conifer, Colorado before moving to Saratoga, Wyoming, where he continued his firefighting and was a beloved bus driver for the local school...

  • Visitor's council makes changes

    Mike Armstrong|Mar 24, 2021

The Carbon County Visitors Council (CCVC) met in Rawlins on March 10 at the Best Western Hotel for their regularly scheduled meeting. All board members were present in person except the Baggs and Hanna representatives. Weather had prevented them coming in person, and they joined the meeting by Zoom. The Board approved 36 vouchers between February 21, 2020 and March 10, 2021 totaling $27,387.47 for payment. After the financial summary was approved, the board approved the municipality distribution...

  • Who cancelled what now?

    Joshua Wood|Mar 24, 2021

I’ve been hearing that there’s some outrage about cancel culture and that we need to “cancel cancel culture” and, honestly, I couldn’t agree more. The disservice that was done to The Dixie Chicks (now The Chicks) in the early 2000s after they simply expressed their opinion is shameful. Whether or not you agreed with their comments, having their careers effectively ended for a decade and being blacklisted from country music was just wrong. Wait, we’re not talking about that? So we must be tal...

  • Is it time for bold action in the Cowboy State?

    Bill Sniffin|Mar 24, 2021

Even though the idea of Wyoming spending a billion dollars on a gigantic swath of land had some of us scratching our heads about one year ago – well, at least you had to give the project (and Govenor Mark Gordon) high marks for bold imagination. That deal went away when a company outbid Wyoming. But thinking back about that, it makes me wonder if Wyoming should be just a little brash. Be a little bold. Just a bit? Our leaders sometimes act like the proverbial guy who was up to his waist in alligators and forgot all about draining the swamp. W...

    Staff Report|Mar 24, 2021

Construction season in Carbon County is officially underway as the Wyoming Department of Transportation begins a multi-year project on Interstate 80 east of Sinclair, between mile markers 221-227.5. Crews with McGarvin-Moberly Construction Co. started initial bridge work last week on the Wyoming Highway 76 interchange overpass structure near mile marker 221 on I-80. Work planned for the structure this summer includes minor bridge repairs, construction of a retaining wall at the bridge corners, approach slab replacement, epoxy overlays and...

  • Your call has been declined

    Joshua Wood|Mar 24, 2021

More than a month after tabling a resolution in regards to a conditional use permit from Union Telephone Company (Union Wireless) and the City of Rawlins, the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC) unanimously voted against the resolution on March 18. As was reported previously (see “Can you please hold?” on page 1 of the February 17 Saratoga Sun) the county commissioners had tabled the permit at their February 2 meeting following public comments and a petition from nearby residents. The...

  • Mystery solved?

    Joshua Wood|Mar 24, 2021

Saratoga’s Department of Public Works has been trying to figure out exactly why they are experiencing a high level of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in their lagoon effluent. It appears, now, that the issue may be with the lab that has been performing the testing. As was reported previously (see “Mystery at the lagoon” on page 6 of the January 20 Saratoga Sun), Director of Public Works Jon Winter had informed the Saratoga-Carbon County Impact Joint Powers Board (SCCIJPB) of the ongoing issues....

  • HEM gets some wind

    Mike Armstrong|Mar 24, 2021

“We actually had a great weather day in Wind River,” Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) head track coach Jackie Jones said. “The first meet in good weather is sort of a surprise, but was most welcome.” Jones said she was happy with the performance of the track team, especially considering the track and field the team usually uses is being worked on by AML and is not usable this year. “Given what we have faced (as) far as adversity concerning practice, the kids really stepped up,” Jone...

  • Scared but decently confident

    Joshua Wood|Mar 24, 2021

Recently, the University of Wyoming announced the 101 recipients of the Trustees' Scholar Award. One of those recipients was Saratoga Middle High School's Katelyn Bifano, who was first notified about applying for the scholarship in 2020. "I got an email for the application process in the first week of December. So I had to write a whole bunch of short answers (to) questions and submit my resume and a signature of recommendation from my counselor," said Katelyn. "After that, they emailed me back...
