Saratoga is the host for the Wyoming State Championship Chariot Races this year, taking the place of what would have been the 35th annual Donald E. Erickson Memorial Chariot Races. The races will begin March 7 at 1 p.m., at the Buck Springs Arena east of Saratoga. Post time March 8 is at 11 a.m. Much of the weekend will be familiar to race goers as the Saratoga Lions Club plans to have the Calcutta on at 8 p.m., March 6 at the Hotel Wolf. Bidders will have an opportunity to bid on their favorite chariot team before the races...
For the first time in several years, the Carbon Country School District No. 2 Speech Team competed at the Rawlins Speech meet rather than co-hosting it. Speech, like wrestling, is not an activity that the Saratoga Sun has the opportunity to take photos of because the meets and matches are located in a variety of places across the state that are rarely close to home. So when we learned the CCSD#2 students were competing in the Rawlins meet, we talked with coach Debbie Riker...
Ten years ago I attended my first E-Club Cake Auction. I had been told about the level of community support that would be shown but was still somewhat skeptical. Could a small community really live up to the reputation? Amazingly the answer year after year is a resounding yes. Over the years I have tried to explain the phenomenon that is the E-Club Cake Auction to family and friends from across the country. How do people really understand that members of the Encampment community will spend hours baking and decorating cakes,...
As February wanes, the high school basketball season winds down. Unfortunately, the Panthers’ season has already ended. This was my first season covering Panther basketball on a regular basis. It has been a real treat to watch and photograph these athletes this season. When I started covering basketball, I told the Lady Panther’s coach Scott Bokelman I knew very little about basketball. The only terms I knew were jump shot, layup and free throw. I had played basketball gro... Full story
The Carbon County School District No. 2 Board of Trustees unanimously passed the Common District Calendar Option 5B at the Feb. 18 meeting. Board chairwoman Diana Berger gave the audience several opportunities to speak before the vote took place. After some encouragement from Berger, several parents spoke up about their views of the Common District Calendar. Jack Berger and John Konecny talked of the favoritism towards a four-day calendar. Berger, who stated he opposed the...
Ordinance 829 passed on the third reading at the Feb. 17 Saratoga Town Council with little fanfare. The ordinance, which had met opposition in previous meetings did not face any opposition during the final reading. The resolution puts apartment buildings and mobile homes in residential for sewer rather than as commercial, which means that each apartment will be charged a sewer fee. In the Feb. 18 edition of the Saratoga Sun, it was mistakenly reported that apartments would be considered commercial and pay 80 percent of the... Full story
The amendment to the Alcoholic Beverage Ordinance for the town of Encampment was passed after it’s third and final reading. Town Clerk Doreen Harvey stated the only change in the third reading was that the attorney’s advice that the term “alcoholic liquors” be replaced with the term “alcoholic beverages”. Councilman Gary Stull moved to approve the third and final reading and the motion was passed. According to Harvey, “There is one small update since the regular meeting minutes. The Town made a motion to accept an offer for... Full story

John Blumenthal is a familiar face in the Platte Valley, having grown up out at Brush Creek Ranch as a fifth generation Platte Valley resident. His great-great-great grandfather was J.W. Hugus, one of Saratoga's founding fathers. Blumenthal returned to the Platte River Valley following a tour as a Marine in Afghanistan and promptly got back to work by starting his own contracting company last March. "We just fell into it," Blumenthal said, when asked how he and business partne...
The Encampment Boys Varsity basketball team had the eye of the tiger when they hosted the Baggs Rattlers last Friday night. The Tigers took the win 54-47 in a game that had the crowd on its feet several times. The game may not have made much of a difference concerning the Tigers or Rattlers placement at regionals, but the Tigers chalked up a moral and motivational victory. Head coach Clint Bromley hopes the win will provide his team with the confidence necessary to carry his...

The Lady Panthers season came to an end Monday with a loss in the pigtail to the Lusk Tigers 44-55. The Panthers played the Lusk Tigers at home Friday night, which ended in a loss of 34-57. Monday’s game decided who would head into regionals as the 2A Southeast No. 4 seed. Saturday, the Lady Panthers lost to No. 1 seed Southeast 55-11. Justine Fourman and Meredith Lincoln who almost always have double digits in scoring only scored 5 points between them in the game against the...
The Lady Tigers played a great defensive game last Friday night when they faced off against Baggs but were hampered by some ball control issues and missed shots in the second half of their tough loss to the Lady Rattlers 51-43. “We failed to make some plays down the stretch and that was the difference in the outcome,” head coach Amy Clay said. Courtney James put up 20 points and was 5 of 7 from the 3-point line and Cassidy Little contributed 12 points and five assists. Lad...
The Saratoga Panthers saw their last chance at regionals slip through their fingers Monday night as they lost the pigtail game to the Burns Broncs 45-40. The Panthers kept the game close, but missed “tons of shots” from the paint , Panthers head coach Joe Johnston said. The Panthers only shot 17 percent from the floor. Saturday, the Panthers lost their chance as a No. 3 seed when they fell to Southeast 44-59, which put them in a pigtail game at home on Monday. Friday nig...
The entire Saratoga Panthers wrestling team qualified for state at regionals last Saturday. Daynon Mowry and Thatcher Spiering finished second at 126 and 145 respectively and earned All Conference, an especially big honor considering that unlike basketball and other sports where All Conference is voted on by coaches, the wrestlers have to place in the top two at regionals to earn that honor. Jaxon King, finally back from a shoulder injury, finished third with a win by fall...
Mayor Ed Glode said he came away from the River Restoration meeting last week with a good feeling. A sentiment that both Jeff Streeter with Trout Unlimited and Joe Parsons with the Saratoga-Encampment- Rawlins Conservation District (SERCD) echoed. Committees were formed to go forward with the long term project while considering short-term options. The plan has two different concepts that the committee is considering, Glode said. In the meantime, Glode is still weighing...
The Carbon County School District No. 2 Speech Team took the 1A/2A Sweepstakes Trophy at the Rawlins Speech Meet last weekend. Jacob Dickinson took second place in oratory and Lydia Smith took fifth. Dickinson also advanced to semi-finals in drama. Robin Gloss and Larissa Ford won three of four rounds in Public Forum. The girls missed advancing to semi-finals with three other teams because of the other opposing teams with the same record had won against stronger teams. Eighteen schools participated in the Rawlins meet. This...
Jeff Streeter, Project Manager for the North Platte Valley Trout Unlimited, attended the Wyoming Water Commission Basin Plan meeting Jan. 27 to learn and to collaborate. Streeter said that the good news for the Upper North Platte River is that it is of interest to the...
