  • Dodey retires

    Ronda Crouch|Updated Feb 5, 2013

We bid farewell to Dodey Brown as the Site Manager on Thursday with cake and gifts. The quilters are almost finished with Lila’s quilt and they do amazing work. The gamers are gaming as usual. The Domino players introduced me to the game of Dominos, “fun game”. I just need to learn to get rid of the high points before someone goes out. We have done a little re-arranging and added two beautiful plants to add some color to the senior center. We are in the process of putting a computer in the dining area for the seniors to ha... Full story

  • Morgan blocks seven

    Joe Elder|Updated Feb 5, 2013

Jennifer Morgan’s seven blocks stood in contrast to the Lady Tigers’ lowest game stats of the season in a frustrating 10-43 loss to Little Snake River Valley Friday night. “We came out slow and struggled all night,” coach Amy Clay said. “We were not aggressive on either end of the floor.” Ranked fifth in their division, the young Encampment (1-14), (0-5) team couldn’t find any air against the number two LSRV (11-8), (4-2) team. Adding to Cassidy Little’s 4 points, Morgan,...

  • Grapplers win two of five rounds

    Staff Report|Updated Feb 5, 2013

The Saratoga Wrestlers competed in three pool rounds but lost these three duals at the Southeast Duals in Veteran Saturday. The squad then won two duals in the bracketed round. The first three duals, in the pool rounds, determined which teams would move on in the tournament. The bracketed rounds paired up teams with those teams that finished the same earlier in the day. In pool wrestling, the Panthers lost all three duals to Gordon/Rushville, Bayard and Lingle. However, in matches actually wrestled, the Panthers fared much...

  • Tigers bit by Rattlers; fend off Miners

    Brian Trautwein|Updated Feb 5, 2013

The Encampment men (12-3), (4-1) held second place in the conference despite losing by two points to number one Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) on Friday. Encampment then handily beat Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow (HEM) on Saturday. Both games were on the road and the first of the two games was a very close contest that finished with LSRV (17-2), (6-0) on top 36-38. This game proved to be a real a barn burner between two good teams. The game was tied for the duration and...

  • Lady Panthers buzzed by Hornets, spun by Cyclones

    Joe Elder|Updated Feb 5, 2013

With more games behind them and playing on their own hardwood, the fifth ranked Saratoga Lady Panthers (7-13), (0-7) improved their performance against Pine Bluffs (5-9), (2-3) Friday night. Saratoga lost by 6 back in December, but propelled by senior Taylor Smith’s 18 point performance, came within 3 points of a win this time. Smith polished those points with four assists. That trend is promising if the Lady Panther’s end up facing fourth ranked Pine Bluffs in a play-in gam...

  • Panthers one and one at home

    Brain Trautwein|Updated Feb 5, 2013

Saratoga Panther’s basketball team lost the lead late in the game against number two Pine Bluffs (10-6), (4-1) and were forced to foul to try and stop the Hornets. The Hornets were able to convert the intentional fouls into the points that put the game away, 51-59. “Our guys played well,” coach Josh Sandlian said. “The second time around (against Pine Bluffs) was much better.” The game was fast paced and starter Ben Faulk got into foul trouble early in the game and sat the b...

  • Goodspeeds to celebrate 60th

    Liz Wood|Updated Feb 5, 2013

Don Goodspeed is legally blind, but when he leans in close to look at his wife, Shirley, there is a twinkle in his eye. The couple were married on Valentine’s Day in 1953 and are celebrating their 60th anniversary at the Platte Valley Community Center Feb. 16 from noon to 3 p.m. The couple is known around town as the “golf-cart people”. A few years ago they gave up their licenses due to poor eyesight and now drive a golf cart around town. Shirley can still see and she does...

  • If

    Brian Trautwein|Updated Feb 5, 2013

The third vowel, and the sixth letter in the alphabet. Put them together and you have a word, IF. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary the word is a conjunction, putting two ideas together to create a single thought, but one that is dependent on a certain action. A boss of mine once told me “You can’t get anything done IF you don’t get out of bed.” A very correct statement. In the movie “Field of Dreams” the phrase ‘IF you build it, they will come’ kept being whispered...

  • Direction of city council questioned

    Updated Feb 5, 2013

Editor: To the Mayor and City Council: I have become quite concerned about the direction our city council has taken in not allowing the public to have any input at council meetings or has to be in written form a week ahead of the meeting. I remember campaign promises to have more open meetings and discussions. We all become very frustrated and angry when we are not allowed to question or discuss your decisions and wonder what are you trying to cover up? For honest and open government, Sincerely, Rosemary E...

  • More kudos for Clinic

    Updated Feb 5, 2013

Editor: I just wanted to add an amen to the letter to the editor on 1/30/13, “A standing ovation for the Clinic.” I feel the same way about the Saratoga Clinic, all the employees and especially, Doctor Dean! The way they treat people is the main reason we still doctor over there, even though we’ve lived in Rawlins for over 20 years now. Keep up the good work! Respectfully, Becky George, Rawlins...

  • Mayor explains position

    Updated Feb 5, 2013

Editor I would like to address the editorial in the Saratoga Sun dated Jan. 23, 2013. The editorial stated that it appeared that actions were being taken to limit public involvement in the meetings, this is totally untrue. Public comment has been, and always will be, welcomed at the meetings. The comment was made at the last meeting that it was in the town ordinance that we must allow items from the public. Ordinance 2.04.050 lists all of the items that are required to be on the agenda and items from the public is not a...

Lehr, School Resource Officer in Saratoga said his emphasis on the physical safety of students will continue until the schools formally adopt new security measures. Saratoga will be hosting a “Lone Wolf” school, a program that, like its name, teaches one or two officers how to respond to an active shooter. Lehr said officers from all over Wyoming and s...
