    Mike Armstrong|Updated Feb 4, 2020

Cliff Jones, Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School head coach for boys basketball, knew that the Miners would have to play hard to win against Encampment before a home crowd. Unfortunately for the Miners, the Tigers were roaring in their game before their fans. "Encampment shot the ball very well making seven 3-pointers in the first quarter and scoring 29 total points to start the game," Jones said. "We really didn't have an answer defensively and managed to dig...

  • Lady Miners dig deep

    Mike Armstrong|Updated Feb 4, 2020

The Encampment Lady Tigers tested the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners on Friday evening. The Lady Tigers were ahead a couple times by 10 points. "Encampment is a team you always have to be ready for," Jackie Jones, HEM head coach for the girls basketball team said. "They have a great post presence and guards who know how to distribute the ball." Jones said the game was definitely not decided until the end. The Lady Miners came on top by seven points. "It...

  • Hustle and grit

    Joshua Wood|Updated Feb 4, 2020

The young Lady Tigers of Encampment continue working through the season as they attempt to find their footing on the hardwood. Over the weekend, the Encampment girls were dealt a loss both at home and on the road. Little by little, however, it appears that they are getting a game put together that may get them into the regional tournament at the end of the month. Lady Tigers vs. Lady Miners On Friday afternoon, the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners descended...

  • Tigers staying on top

    Joshua Wood|Updated Feb 4, 2020

The Encampment Tigers appear to be all but unstoppable as they continue to progress through their regular season and were able to secure two wins over the weekend. On Friday, the Tigers hosted the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miners and would send the Miners returning home with a 32-point loss. The following day, Encampment was hosted by the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers in Baggs and dealt a loss to another conference rival. Tigers vs. Miners The HEM...

  • Engineering an accurate time

    Joshua Wood|Updated Feb 4, 2020

Part of the evolution of any event, especially one in which time is an essential component, is the timing system. The same goes for Saratoga Skijoring, which has gone from an analog timing system to one that removes human error. While a timing system might normally set an organization back a few thousand dollars, the system used for Saratoga Skijoring comes courtesy of Jon Nelson of North Fork Engineering. Nelson has been part of the timing for Saratoga Skijoring since the...

  • Working Class Waugh

    Joshua Wood|Updated Feb 4, 2020

On Friday evening, people from across the west will be pouring into Saratoga as they head to the Wolf Hotel to register for Saratoga Skijoring. The two-day event is arguably a new past-time for members of the modern working class of the west and, just down the street from the historical building, a local artist will be highlighting those individuals. Local artist Jamie Waugh, who also does business as Bandita Bones, will be holding an art show in the former home of Fishpaw at...

  • Taking it to another level

    Joshua Wood|Updated Feb 4, 2020

As Saratoga Skijoring prepares to enter its fourth year, it is already proving to be the place to be for competition. In those four years, the event competition has come a long way. In 2016, the Platte Valley Jaycees approached the Saratoga Lions Club about putting on a skijoring race. The Lions Club, looking for something to replace the cancelled chariot races, were more than willing to help. "Initially, it was the Jaycees that had the idea and they said 'We have no idea how...

  • Lady Panthers bite into Lady Rattlers

    Joshua Wood|Updated Feb 4, 2020

The Saratoga Lady Panthers, much like the Panthers themselves, appear to be setting out that they have something to prove this season. Following their sole game this weekend against a conference rival, the Lady Panthers do not appear to be in any danger of having to play a pig-tail play-in like they did last season to make it to the regional tournament. On Friday, the Lady Panthers braved the winter roads to be hosted by the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers....

  • Panthers pounce on Baggs

    Joshua Wood|Updated Feb 4, 2020

The Saratoga Panthers started their season with something to prove. As their season progresses, they appear to be doing just that. Following their wins against the Cokeville Panthers and the Farson-Eden Pronghorns the weekend before, Saratoga was able to add another conference win this past weekend against the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers (8-8, 0-4). “The Snake Pit is not an easy place to play, but we were able to build a sizeable lead by the end of the 1st q...

  • Weather wrecks wrestling week

    Mike Armstrong|Updated Feb 4, 2020

There is always uncertainty when events are scheduled in the winter time in Wyoming. This past week both the wrestling teams of Saratoga High School Panthers and the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miners were forced to cancel any meets this week. On January 28 the two teams were to meet for an invite at the Saratoga High School along with Rawlins and North Park, Colorado. Old Man Winter had other ideas. Snow and wind had the roads shut down in the early morning and...

  • Beating the weather

    Staff Report|Updated Feb 4, 2020

The new and improved Saratoga Museum Pavilion is now scheduling events, weddings and receptions/parties due in part to a $5,000 grant received from the General Grant Fund from the Wyoming Community Foundation and a $1,000 Bridge Street Bargains Grant. Inclement weather is a part of where we live. With the new weather curtains, events can be scheduled and not have to worry about bad weather, especially the wind. The Saratoga Historical & Cultural Association (SH & CA) is a nonprofit organization serving South Central Wyoming....

  • Accepting awards and accolades

    Joshua Wood|Updated Feb 4, 2020

The Saratoga Sun recently went to the 121st Wyoming Press Association and won 10 Pacemaker Awards. On a weekend in which we are able to meet and visit with our peers, getting recognized for the hard work we put in over the year is also a very wonderful feeling. It’s even more wonderful when you consider how many newspapers are in the small weekly category with the Sun. That category seems to grow annually. You can see the awards won by the staff of the Sun on page 5 of this w... Full story

  • Destiny and dentistry

    Joshua Wood|Updated Feb 4, 2020

It has often been said that the only constant in life is change. Even in the Platte Valley, where life seems to move a little slower, it is inevitable. For Dr. Robert Wimpenny, owner of Platte Valley Dental, change has come after more than 31 years in business. While his decision was not an easy one, and is emotional, he is leaving it in the hands of someone he feels will provide the same level of service he has for the past three decades. When it comes to Dr. David Scott, it...

  • The future is tourism

    Mike Armstrong|Updated Feb 4, 2020

John Farr has lived in Encampment for several years. Farr is also the Encampment representative for the Carbon County Visitors Council (CCVC) and is pleased with how the board promotes the county to the nation and world. “It has some sharp people on the board and you can tell they love their area they represent in Carbon County the way I love Encampment,” Farr said. He started out a Colorado native, but came to the Valley years ago for fishing and knew this was the place he...

Owen Williams is the third generation to manage the Double 8 Ranch near Elk Mountain. This year, under his care, the Double 8 won the Wyoming Stock Growers Association's (WSGA) Environmental Stewardship Program and Award, in partnership with the Wyoming Department of Agriculture. The Double 8 is made up of 10,000 deeded acres. It is six miles south...

  • What a difference a day makes

    Mike Armstrong|Updated Feb 4, 2020

Twenty-four hours can make all the difference in weather in Carbon County. Depending on where you live, the weather can be very different also. The past two days is a good example of this adage. On Sunday, most of Carbon County was enjoying warm temperatures for this time of year. Municipalities throughout the county enjoyed highs near 50 degrees and it was welcome relief after a week of almost daily road closures due to Old Man Winter’s wrath. The respite was short lived w...
