The last building block in the Economic Development Tiers is “New Business Recruitment”. This gets people really excited when they think about community and economic development. “All of our problems would be solved if we just had a business relocate here and hire 125 people.” “If we had more retail shopping, we could keep people from leaving town.” “We just need to get someone to build a new motel.” These myths have haunted community leaders for decades. In reality, growth comes from within a community. Instead, we need to create an envir...
It is the beginning of January and winter is now here. I have to admit, I am not thrilled to deal with this time of year because of the snow. Not because I don’t enjoy winter sports, but because I live 40 miles away from my workplace. Let me tell you, there are times I feel like northern Carbon County is the Antarctic’s little brother. I don’t drive the most snow worthy car either. It gets great gas mileage, but once the roads get more than three inches, I am taking my life into my hands. It ha...

The Saratoga wrestling team went to Wright for the New Year’s Dual that included the teams of Wright, Deadwood, Sturgis and Sundance on Jan. 4. “We got four duals in that day,” Zach Schmidt, Panther head wrestling coach said. “We started off the day against Wright who is number six ranked in the state in 2A and we did well against them.” Schmidt said four wrestlers had to stay home and that led to a hole in how much the Panthers could compete. “We came off Wright 4-2, so if you go by that we...
The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) wrestlers went to the Shane Shatto Tournament on Jan. 4-5 in Douglas. Blakeman went 0-2. Richardson was pleased with how his o...
"It was a game where you didn't want to see either team lose," Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) girls head basketball Jackie Jones said. "Both teams just laid it out there. The Lady Tigers scored first in the game and in the first half got ahead of the Lady Miners by 10 points, but HEM fought on to stay in the game. The Encampment team seemed to be in...
