On the day after Christmas a strong snowstorm hit northern Carbon County and, besides closing down the roads, the winter weather played havoc with the railroad traffic. The early morning derailment of cars between Medicine Bow and Hanna shut down the track for a couple days. The boxcars stacked up on top of each other but, as bad as the accident looked, no one was seriously injured. The weather cleared up, compared to the day before, and crews were on scene quickly to get the train traffic...
Carbon County is large, diverse and has the most municipalities in one county in the state. The county also has a strong year round travel industry with outdoor activities for every season and a joint powers board that promotes tourism (see “Advocating for tourism” on page 6 of the January 1 edition of the Saratoga Sun). The Carbon County Visitors Council (CCVC) is tasked with promoting Carbon County as a destination and is funded through a dedicated county wide lodging tax levied at two per...
While the 37th Annual Ice Fishing Derby is still a week away, another ice-bound event will be taking place this weekend. For the past three years, Mother Mountain Anglers (MMA), an Encampment-based non-profit, has been holding an ice fishing clinic aimed at young anglers. This weekend will mark the fourth year that the clinic has taken place. The intention of the clinic is to not only teach children to ice fish, but also to educate on the importance of ice safety, how to set up an ice rod, how...
It has been said that a community needs its newspaper. This is true. The community often depends upon its local paper from coverage of high school sports to reporting on the actions of the town council and everything in between. The newspaper, in many ways, serves as the conscience and the heart of the community. What’s not stated as often, but perhaps should be, is that a newspaper needs its community. Any newspaper that strives to succeed realizes this and a good community newspaper should have involvement from its readers. Much like a g...
This past Thursday marked my two year anniversary with the Saratoga Sun and, to be honest, I didn’t even realize it until I was scrolling through Facebook that night. It doesn’t quite feel like it’s been that long since I first started working here. At the same time, it feels like much more time than that has passed since this summer. Time is weird that way; both speeding by and dragging along. As I think about the past 24 months with the Sun, it’s hard not to think about all the differe...
The Saratoga Lady Panthers only had one game over the weekend as they returned to the hardwood following the holiday break. The first post-holiday game for the Lady Panthers was on the road as they were hosted by the Rock River Lady Longhorns. Not only did Saratoga’s girls come out ready to play, but they were able to put another win under their belt. “Our game in Rock River went really well this weekend,” said Heather Bartlett, head coach for the Lady Panthers. “I was really pleased with th...
The Saratoga Panthers had just one game coming out of the winter break, but added yet another win under their belt as they prepare to enter conference play. On Saturday, the Panthers hit the road and were hosted by the Rock River Longhorns. The night before, Rock River had been dealt a loss while in Encampment and would be given another one by Saratoga. “The Rock River game was a good game for us and gave us a chance to knock off the Christmas rust,” said Jason Williams, head coach for the Pan...
Coming off of winter break, the Encampment Lady Tigers hosted two games in Tiger Nation over the weekend. With a largely young team, the Lady Tigers are still working on finding their groove on the court. Despite that, Encampment ended their weekend with one loss and one win and an idea on how to move forward in the season. On Friday, the Lady Tigers fell by 2 points to the Rock River Lady Longhorns and, on Saturday, beat the North Park Lady Wildcats by 7 points. "We're kind of having a...
Over the weekend, the Encampment Tigers showed that they didn't waste any time during their holiday break. Hosting two non-conference games, the Tigers hit the hardwood running as they ended both games with running clocks. On Friday afternoon, the Tigers hosted the Rock River Longhorns and wasted no time in putting points on the board. Saturday afternoon saw similar gameplay as Encampment hosted the North Park Wildcats. With the significant lead that the Tigers saw over both teams, Head Coach...
When it comes to healthcare, a state-of-the-art facility in the center of an urban area doesn’t necessarily mean that there is access to quality healthcare. Conversely, living in a rural area doesn’t mean that the healthcare available is inadequate. Working on dispelling those preconceptions about rural vs. urban healthcare is the goal behind the Health Equity Leadership Program, a program between the University of Wyoming (UW) School of Pharmacy and the Howard University School of Pha...
While most people were likely bringing in the New Year at home or out with friends, at least one person spent it out in the winter weather according to a press release from the Carbon County Sheriff’s Department. At approximately 8:23 p.m. on December 31, 2019, the sheriff’s department received a call from Shanae Wilfong. She informed the department that her husband, Matthew Wilfong, was hunting alone near Marshal Road, northeast of Medicine Bow, and had become stuck in the snow and his truck’s fuel light was on. Crossroads Towing and Recov...
The Critical Access Hospital (CAH) designation has become a vital link to providing quality healthcare services in rural America but building one from scratch, as they’re hoping to do in Saratoga, adds an extra layer of challenges. For more than a year, the Platte Valley Healthcare Project (PVHP) committee has been pursuing a Critical Access Hospital to provide services to the North Platte River Valley. According to Will Faust, PVHP chairman, one important aspect of the effort so far has been to seek knowledge and advice from similar rural c...
