    Saratoga’s past and present will be revealed during a “Historic Downtown Walking Tour” Saturday, June 11, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Platte Valley Community Center parking lot and concluding with lunch at the Wolf Hotel.     Local American Legion Post 54 and Platte Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6125 (VFW) will hold memorial services Monday for those who died while serving in the United States of America Armed Forces.     U.S. Senator Mike Enzi announced that Encampment and Saratoga have more Congressional gold medals per city than any other in the nation, a press release from the Wyoming Congressional Award Council (WCAC) said.     The Grand Encampment Museum (GEM) is working on a Textile Preservation project that was initiated by Christy Smith, GEM director, and Lynda Johnson, GEM staff member. The goal of the project, which was started in spring 2015, is to inventory all of the textiles within the museum's collection, which includes military uniforms, dresses, suits, hats, scarves, quilts and other items dating from 1860s through the 1920s, according to a press release.   • Kunz sentenced to 3 to 6 years

    Saratoga resident Sherry Kunz, 45, appeared in second district court in Rawlins on April 25 for sentencing after pleading guilty to obtaining property by false pretenses, a felony. Judge Wade Waldrip sentenced Kunz to 3 to 6 years in prison, with five years suspended sentence. She was also ordered to pay $38,728.77 in restitution to Spur Outfitters, as well as various court fees. Kunz had been accused of embezzling nearly $40,000 from her employer, the Silver Spur Ranch in Encampment, and was charged with theft, obtaining property by false... Full story

    Cowboy Basketball Camps will return in June, with the individual camp beginning first on June 5 and running through June 8. Registration can continue through the first day of camp, though it should be known that space is limited for this overnight camp. It’s available for boys aged 8-18.     Karen C. Russell, of Encampment, is to receive the $1,000 American Legion Auxiliary Memorial Scholarship for 2016. Karen was a delegate to the 2015 Girls State program. The American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion also offered a $1,000 scholarship this year. The recipient of that scholarship was Cruz Escobedo from Saratoga.     Saratoga's Morgan Rempel will be going to nationals in San Diego for his Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) project, which was an end table made of recycled materials for the Recycle and Redesign portion of the state competition.   • With spring comes road work

    Construction has begun on HWY 230, north of Encampment. The project will be similar to what Platte Valley residents saw north of Saratoga on 130 last summer, as a mill and overlay project. The construction is contracted by McGarvin-Moberly Construction out of Worland, and according to president Phil Caines, the group will start with a contractor this week to grind the top two inches off the road.
