I saw the ad for the internship at the Saratoga Sun at the beginning of June when I was driving with my dad to Rock Springs for one of my way-too-common knee drain appointments. I had been waiting on another summer job to call me back for a while and was starting to get impatient. I called Liz at the Sun right away and we talked about the position and shortly after, I got the job. Both my dad and I were so excited because we knew this would be the perfect opportunity for me. I got plenty of expe...

On June 3, Saratoga welcomed a new business, Hot Diggidy Dog, to the Platte Valley. Susan Wallace and Ellie Hoyt joined forces to operate their hot dog business together. Hoyt has some experience in the field; 14 years ago, she operated the hot dog shop across from the post office and behind Perue Printing for about three years. Wallace and Hoyt have known each other for quite some time. Hoyt mentioned to Wallace that she was planning on reopening her hot dog business and asked Wallace if she wa...
Being a single parent must be really tough in some cases; however, being a single dad with a daughter must be even tougher. Mine handled it exceptionally well. I don’t think it’s quite possible for me to have grown up with a better dad. He was my superhero — and still is. I admit, he wasn’t very good at braiding my hair or painting my nails. I did get very spoiled though; the town can attest to that. I got called a “spoiled brat” so many times I lost track. When my dad used to work at Carbon Cou...
On June 27, 2015, Laurie Forster was elected as the first-ever female president on the Carbon Power and Light (CP&L) Board. There has only been one other woman on Carbon's Board of Directors besides Forster since the Board has been active beginning in 1941. The first female Board member on Carbon's Board was Jane H. Houston, of Centennial, Wyo. She served on the Board of Directors for 14 years from 1983 to 1997. Forster describes her emotions upon being elected, "It was very unexpected. I was...

The Saratoga High School volleyball team recently came together to help the community of Lusk, Wyo. in their time of need. The small town suffered a big flood in early June that destroyed property and caused residents to evacuate their homes. Our local high school volleyball team organized a way to help Lusk. They gathered up clothes, food, bedding and other basic needs for the town from people who were willing to donate to the cause. They also made personal hygiene kits that included things...

Darrell "Whitey" Stewart, born and raised in Wyoming, stays in shape at the age of 87 years old by participating in running events such as half-marathons. Stewart first started running around 1943 while he was running errands and working as ranch help for Ralph Platte in Riverside. His endurance was built up by things he did in the field such as haying. He mostly does race walking in events rather than race running. The difference between the two, according to Stewart, is that a race walker has...
I have been home from college for a couple of months now. Everywhere I go it seems that I run into somebody who is interested in knowing what my first year away from home was like (which I love). It is so nice being from a small community where people are friendly. I figured there is no better place to explain than here. Things went fairly smooth my first year at Central Wyoming College. The biggest challenge for me was being away from home. I missed seeing my dad every night for dinner. When I...
Summer is here, and that means people are spending more time outdoors in the hot sun. While being outside is enjoyable, the public needs to recognize the importance of protecting their skin from harmful sun rays. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States with melanoma being responsible for the most deaths with over 9,000 each year. The CDC reports that an individual dying from melanoma loses an average...
It has been 75 years since Betty (Everist) Vyvey graduated from high school. She attended Platte Valley High School in Saratoga and graduated in 1940. Vyvey was born in a homestead cabin in southern Colorado. The closest school to their home in Colorado was more than 20 miles away. There were no school buses at that time, leaving only horses and her own two feet as options for getting to school. Her family moved to Saratoga in 1936 when she was 13 years old because her uncle owned the grocery st...
