The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners were at home and away for a split weekend for two conference matches. The Lady Miners hosted the Guernsey-Sunrise Lady Vikings on October 1 and were hosted by the Rock River Lady Longhorns on October 2. Lady Miners vs. Lady Vikings "This was our third meeting with Guernsey this season so we knew somewhat to expect, however volleyball is such a mental sport that you never feel fully prepared," Head Coach Tiera Scott said. "We were down on of...
The Saratoga Panthers played well against the Lingle-Ft. Laramie (Lingle) Doggers on Friday evening but, at the end, could not quite pull off the win according to Head Coach Logan Wright. "If we had three or four minutes left in the game instead of two when we got the ball back," Wright said, "I think we would have scored and won." Wright believes the Panthers were equal to the team the Doggers fielded for the October 1 game. "Their team had three big plays that they scored on and that was the...
Members of the Sinclair Town Council found themselves in a bind in April. Mayor Asa Meeks had not shown up for several regularly scheduled council meetings. Further, there was no contact with town hall to explain why. Additionally, one of the council members, Leo Black, was missing the same meetings and there had also been no contact to explain the reason. "They just stopped showing up at the meetings," Current Sinclair mayor Leif Johansson said. "We never received anything from either on why...
The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners started their weekend on Friday facing the Encampment Lady Tigers. The first game of the season had the Lady Miners meet the Lady Tigers on their home turf where Encampment came out on top after playing five sets. It was hoped the Lady Miners would get revenge on their home field. It did not happen with the team losing 3-1. The 1st set was close at 17-17 before the Lady Tigers made a run to go ahead and stayed there, winning 25-21. The...
When the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers met the Dubois Rams on the gridiron last year, the Rattlers ended up losing a very tight game. That memory had Head Coach Jack Cobb very nervous because, he said, the Rattlers were basically facing the exact same team. It was a very different outcome with LSRV winning 46-0. “We came out knowing we had to play a complete game against Dubois,” Cobb said. “You have to beat Dubois because they never beat themselves.” Cobb said in the 1st quarter...
Though the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miners fells 50-13 to the Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings, the resulting game on Saturday was a great one to watch. While the Miners lost against the much larger Viking team, HEM put on a show of commitment and heart although the eight players on the team never got much breathing time. "I am proud of every single one of these players," Head Coach Zach Scott said. "Every single one of those kids went out there and played their heart out. They didn't...
After a difficult summer in 2020, the Hanna Basin, Elk Mountain and Medicine Bow museums invited Carbon County residents and outsiders to come and visit the Hanna Basin Museum to welcome them back on September 19. Directors of all three museums welcomed the visitors with a food spread donated by restaurants from Elk Mountain, Hanna, Medicine Bow and Saratoga. To raise money, there was a 50-50 raffle and a silent auction which had items donated by businesses from all over the county. There were...
Meeting on September 15 at Elk Mountain Town Hall, the Carbon County Council of Governments (CCCOG) covered two major topics; the proposed fire district and recently released data from the United States Census Bureau. Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattler football took on the Burlington Huskies on their home field in a conference game, but the Rattlers came away victorious. The Rattlers won 68-16. “The past four or five years, the games with Burlington came down to a point or two,” Head Coach Jack Cobb said. “I told the boys this season to anticipate the same type of game.” Cobb said the team was late getting to Burlington due to construction on roads and that the team only had about 15 minutes to warm up...
The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners were dealt two non-conference losses while on the road last week. HEM was hosted by the Saratoga Lady Panthers on September 14 and by the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers on September 17. Lady Miners vs. Lady Panthers The Lady Miners played well in the first two sets, losing 25-21 in both. In the last set, however, HEM went down with the score being 25-16. "Saratoga is a great program and they have some great athletes," Head...
The Saratoga Panthers had the Pine Bluff High School Hornets as their opponents on Friday for their homecoming game. Although the 1st quarter had the Panthers and Hornets scoreless until the last minute and a half, the Pine Bluffs team came out on top 52-0. Head Coach Logan Wright played the game without his starting quarterback, Geoffrey Johnson, who got hurt on September 14 during practice. "He tweaked his achilles in practice on Tuesday and I knew by Wednesday he was not going to be able to...
The Hanna Town Council met on September 14 at the Hanna Town Hall. Mayor Lois Buchanan and council members Sammy Sikes and Bill Dys were present. Council members Tracy Fowler and Jayson Nordquist were absent. There were few in the audience and the council moved quickly through the department and board reports. Buchanan said the High Country Joint Powers Board would be meeting once every six months, a change from meeting every three months. She said Viper Construction would be working on Sunday t...
The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miner football team had to take a pass this week on playing. The Miners team started the season with a smaller number of boys than past years, which made HEM have to cancel this week's game when injuries and sickness took their toll. "With our low numbers and the number of injuries, we are unable to play week two and three," Head Coach Zack Scott said. "Our hope is to have enough kids back to play at home against Guernsey/Sunrise in week four." It is...
The Saratoga Panther football team continued their winning ways with their second game of the season against the Moorcroft Wolves. “We played pretty good and it was a team that came here last year and beat us,” Head Coach Logan Wright said. “We are 2-0 for the first time since I have been here.” Wright said he told the team being 2-0 was great, but being 3-0 would be better. “Each week, it gets harder,” Wright said. “Next week we play Pine Bluffs and they just knocked off the number one te...
Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers football Head Coach Jack Cobb anticipated a real challenge to his team when he faced the Encampment Tigers team this past Friday. “We had a good game with them last year,” Cobb said. “They have size, speed and a lot of talent. We knew it was going to be a team effort to win and not because of one or two players.” In the 1st quarter, both teams could not put any points on the board. “Encampment is a big powerful team. Three kids are over 220 or 230 and t...
Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners volleyball team was hosted by the Guernsey-Sunrise Lady Vikings on Friday and left winners. “We won in three games,” Head Coach Teira Scott said. “The first game we won 25-10 and then the other two games were actually very close.” Scott is right. The 2nd game had the Lady Miners win 26-24. “It was a little closer than we would like them to be,” Scott said. “But we came out on top and that is what counts in the end.” The last set, HEM won 25...
"I don't really like the term affordable housing," Jezria Latham, broker and owner of Provident Realty said. "I have been trying to figure out another term because, clearly, what is affordable to some people is not affordable to others." Latham prefers to think of affordable housing as income-based housing and there are different tiers and brackets. "What I am seeing for those looking to come into the Valley-such as police officers, teachers and entry level health care personnel that are just...
The Carbon County Visitors Council (CCVC) met on August 18 at the Cowboy Inn in Baggs. Newly elected Chairperson Danny Burau called the meeting to order. The board approved the distribution of 11 checks to municipalities and the county treasurer for a total of $17,222.37. The total collected from Lodging Tax revenue for the month of August was $172,223.68. This time frame is actually monies collected from...
A housing crunch in Carbon County is hard to believe for me. I live in Hanna where housing always seemed available but it is here along with almost every town in the county. How long is anyone’s guess, but people coming to this area are discovering what I did over 20 years ago. Carbon County is fantastic. I bought my first Carbon County house in Saratoga. It was a two bedroom townhouse on Elm Street and I loved it. The only problem? It was too small for all the stuff I had. I didn’t even realize...
With a total of 10 museums, Carbon County has the most museums of any county in Wyoming. These historical depositories range in size from the Grand Encampment Museum (GEM), which has thirty or so buildings with exhibits sometimes changing on a monthly basis, to Baggs and Elk Mountain which have one building to show off their history. All museums depend on funding from grants and donations although, in the Little Snake River Valley and Saratoga, museum districts were formed. This gives a stream...
Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners volleyball is getting its footing as the season progresses with all the girls getting a chance to play according to head coach Teira Scott. “This weekend allowed all of our girls the opportunity to play a lot of volleyball,” Scott said. “We were able to play some teams that we do not usually see in our regular season schedule so that was nice too.” The Lady Miners played three teams on Friday. “We played Wind River our first game and got off t...
The Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers football team played their first game against another Carbon County six-man team and came out victorious 61-0. “Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) just didn’t have a lot of players to go to this year,” Head Coach Jack Cobb said. “They were scrambling to have enough players to compete with us. Also my boys were fired up to compete with someone other than themselves.” Cobb said he has 24 players on his team. In six-man that is a lot of depth. Th...
Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miners football went to face the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers on Saturday and left with a loss. The game ended with LSRV scoring 61 points while keeping HEM scoreless. LSRV has a roster of 24 players. HEM has 12 players with senior Joseph Borah injured. The Rattlers were able to return a kickoff for a touchdown and then get an interception, giving LSRV momentum from the beginning. Clearly with a lot going south, HEM had every right to want...
At the beginning of the season, Logan Wright, head coach of Saratoga Panther football, said the Panthers were underdogs. Wyoming Indian High School probably doesn't buy this assessment after getting trounced by Saratoga 62-8. While the game didn't go well in the beginning with an early fumble by the Panthers, the Cheifs failed to captilize on it. The teams remained scoreless until Tuker Carricato went in for a touchdown with 4:50 left in the 1st quarter. From this point on, the Panthers could...
When the third Hanna resident was taken away by ambulance for COVID complications on Thursday, Mayor Lois Buchanan, came to the conclusion action was warranted. Buchanan, herself in quarantine after testing positive, was concerned COVID was starting to spread in her town. The town clerk had tested positive after being exposed to someone who came in the office. Thursday's ambulance call was the third in the week with patients being taken to the hospital with COVID problems. "On the better side...
