  • The world needs more Mr. Sotos

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 26, 2022

In another life, much younger, I was a kindergarten English teacher in Taichung, Taiwan. It was an early job when I first arrived fresh from Hawaii. It laid the ground for me teaching English at hospitals and becoming a private teacher. It was an amazingly fun era for me; as I look back. Especially teaching kids. After living in Hawaii for two years, I came to island with only an English degree from the University of Maryland. Good luck was with me and within three months I found myself working...

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 26, 2022

Just as 2021 came to a close, the town of Medicine Bow received news their Public Works Director, Charlie George was retiring after 16 years of service with the town. It was the first time a town employee had actually retired. Prior years had workers leave on their own and at request of the town. He will be missed. "Charlie has been great to work with," Mayor Sharon Biamon said. "He really cared about the town and the people that lived here. He set a bar that will be tough to match. Everyone...

The team had been scheduled for a HEM Quad, on January 18, but teams pulled out and it was canceled. Riddle was happy to get to go to Lingle and even happier with some...

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 26, 2022

The Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattler’s head coach, Jack Cobb, had wanted to test his team out against bigger 2A Colorado teams this week. Although LSRV took two hits, the games did not matter in the conference race of the 1A Southwest where the Rattlers are 2-0. “We went to Meeker and played a big team—not super big—and we didn’t play as well as I think we could,” Cobb said. “We got behind in the beginning and then when we looked like we were making a run, they started scoring.” In...

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 19, 2022

Class, integrity and character. These are words not often found in this day and age when describing individuals, but there is a man known by just about anyone who has met him to have these attributes. His name is Dario Soto, but to most-friend, student, player, parent or colleague-he is known respectfully as Mr. Soto. After coaching basketball for nearly 60 years, Mr. Soto finished his coaching career on January 11 at Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School on the court which bears...

  • A familiar face at Saratoga Museum

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 19, 2022

Carbon County is blessed with seven museums. They range in size and what they offer to the public. All of them share the goal of archiving and saving the culture of the area around them for future generations. Being a director of a museum is not an easy job. There is a lot of responsibility in receiving, cataloging and displaying items when they come in. It takes a special person to be a director and recently the Saratoga Museum had to go on a hunt to find one. It took a little time, but on...

  • HEM girls work to dig out wins

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 19, 2022

"The girls play hard and with heart," Jackie Jones, Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners head coach, said. "But quite frankly, after playing well and hard, they just ran out of gas." Jones is talking about the two losses the HEM Lady Miners suffered against the Saratoga Lady Panthers (52-27) and the Farson-Eden Lady Pronghorns (33-22). "We are never looking for sympathy, but our kids are playing to the buzzer and they don't complain and just keep working," Jones said. "On the...

  • Miner grapplers hit the road

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 19, 2022

“They changed the Don Runner Invite from a bracketed tournament to a dual tournament and, only having four or five kids, an invite like that doesn’t benefit us very much,” Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) wrestling coach Robert Riddle said. “So we were able to switch to the Thomas-Jackman Tournament in Green River which was a round robin bracketed tournament which lets the kids have more matches.” Before going to Green River on January 15 and 16, the team also went to the North Park Tria...

  • Rattlers bite Tigers, Pronghorns

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 19, 2022

The Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers played two tough teams this weekend and won much to the delight of Head Coach Jack Cobb. He knows the 1A Southwest Conference is loaded with excellent teams and, since only four can go to regionals, one good team will be left behind. He is hoping it won't be the Ratters and, after the weekend, he has a reason to be hopeful. The Rattlers are on a five game winning streak and two of those wins this weekend were in their conference. Their first test...

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 12, 2022

  • Miners building their team

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 12, 2022

by Mike Armstrong "In the past four or five years, I don't think I have ever had a group of players give it their all the way this team did this past week," Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Head Coach Cliff Jones said. "I have had teams go to State and won more games, but I don't believe I have had a group of boys, 15 to 18 play so hard for me and each other. They are a credit to our school in a way that is even better if we went the whole season undefeated." The HEM Miners played Rock...

  • Learning from loss

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 12, 2022

Unfortunately for the Lady Miners, they lost both contests. Head coach Jackie Jones knew coming off the holiday break was not going to be easy for her team, but she didn't expect almost all...

  • The inspiration of the arts

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 5, 2022

I find it funny how I have to go to kids’ concerts to remind myself how important the arts are to school programs, and to me. I was a lucky kid growing up around Washington D.C. because both sets of my folks liked to take me to plays and concerts even though, sometimes, I wasn’t really into going. Still, I saw Broadway shows which came to town and I even went to New York a few times. Culture was being ingrained into me whether I wanted it or not. My mother was always playing classical music in... Full story
