The Saratoga Panthers volleyball team went 2-3 in a weekend tournament in Kaycee, but according to coach Shayley Love, the friendly tournament was about more than results. Saratoga has three games left in conference play, and if the Lady Panthers want to make it to the regional tournament in Lander, they will have to pick up at least one more W from those remaining matches. "We got to see all but three of the (other) 1A teams in this tournament," Love said, continuing, "That was a huge... Full story
Ryan Greene, the 33-year-old Rock Springs businessman and Democratic candidate for Wyoming’s U.S. congressional district introduced himself by saying, “I’m a pipe-welder by trade.” Perhaps that’s because few career politicians would have taken the odds offered Greene in his first run for elected office. Greene discussed his bid in an Oct. 3 interview with the Saratoga Sun. Long Odds The last Democrat to represent Wyoming in Congress was Rep. Teno Roncalio in 1978. Following Roncalio... Full story
Two injuries and a long bus ride may have played a role in the Saratoga football team’s 47-7 loss last Friday to conference rival Cokeville. The defeat leaves Saratoga with a tenuous 1-2 conference record and an uncertain roster heading into a critical match up with Rocky Mountain High Oct. 14. Trouble started for Saratoga well before the first snap on Friday. Earlier in the week, senior guard Max Schneider discovered he had sustained a concussion in a Sept. 30 Homecoming contest against S... Full story
In the parking lot, horns blared. In the stands, fans' voices arched into a fevered crescendo. From the announcer's booth, Teense Willford's normally rolling, easy-going speech took on a quiver of excitement and anticipation. Unfortunately for the Panthers over Homecoming weekend, none of it was quite enough. With about 150 in attendance Sept. 30, Saratoga lost a hard-fought battle with the Shoshoni Wranglers 28-26, leaving the Panthers with a 1-1 conference record. "Those ones are always... Full story
The night of Sept. 24, the wheel literally came off a Saratoga burglary operation. While a crowd was gathered inside the Platte Valley Community Center (PVCC) for a fundraiser, Saratoga Police Chief Robert Bifano guessed several would-be thieves were outside trying to steal Chevy truck rims from cars in the PVCC parking lot. Bifano said the brazen but failed burglary, which resulted in one vehicle’s wheel rolling off when its unsuspecting owner later tried to drive away, may be part of a l... Full story
Homecoming was a tough weekend for Saratoga High School athletics in general, and the volleyball team in particular. The Panthers volleyball team split the weekend's matches, but they didn't win the one they wanted to. A Saturday win over non-conference North Park in Walden, Colo. was overshadowed by a loss in four suffered the night before at home against conference competitor Farson/Eden. Despite strong showing in friendlies throughout the year, the Panthers have fallen 0 and 2 in the games that count, placing them towards the back of the pack in their 1A Southwest Conference. It was the Panthers' second... Full story
Three games into the season, the Panthers and their rookie coach Kegan Willford were still looking for their first win when they opened up conference play against Wyoming Indians Sept. 23. That elusive first W came in unexpectedly forceful fashion as the Cats, playing far from home, posted a 58-0 blowout victory over the Chiefs in their regional debut. Saratoga came off the bench roaring and didn’t let up at any point. Though the Panthers deferred the kickoff, opting to send their defense o... Full story
Close to a dozen volunteers came to Bridge Street Bargains Sept. 22, to help with the thrift shop’s seasonal “flip” to winter clothes and accessories. A picnic table at Oddfellows Park painted with store funds recently went missing, but that hasn’t dampened the enthusiastic visions of store board members Julie Evans and Carol Beach. The pair see a big role in the Platte Valley community for the bargain outlet, and the store is already making contributions in several areas. According to Beach,... Full story
From all appearances, three wild fires burning near the state line are in terminal phase, and fire managers are shifting focus from suppression to rehabilitation. According to a Forest Service news release, management of the Beaver Creek, Broadway and Snake Fires are set to be downgraded from National Incident Management Organization (NIMO) to a Type III Incident Command Team Sept. 22. None of the fires have grown appreciably since heavy precipitation dampened fuels last week, and containment... Full story
"How do we divvy this up?" Saratoga Planning Commission member Will Faust asked at a Sept. 13 meeting of the group. Perhaps the quintessential question of planning, Faust was referring in this case to Saratoga's area of influence or town buffer zone, which must change to reflect new statutes from Cheyenne. The buffer zone, also called a realm of influence, is an area outside of but in close proximity to town limits. As enforced in the past, this zone extended one mile beyond town limits to form... After a momentary stumble against their first conference opponent Sept. 10, the Panthers volleyball team came roaring back to form last week. The girls took all three of their matches in commanding fashion, winning in the minimum three sets against Kaycee (Sept. 17) and North Park (Sept. 13), and taking what would have been a grudge match from the Laramie sophomore team in four sets Sept. 16. Laramie, whom the Panthers had already defeated earlier in the season, posed one of the biggest... Full story
With its first scheduled conference competition right around the corner Sept. 23, the Saratoga football team suffered another loss Sept. 16, falling 46-6 to the Southeast Cyclones. "We kind of got into a hole early and couldn't crawl out," said coach Kegan Willford Monday. After the first quarter, the Panthers were down 12-0 following two Cyclones touchdowns and a... Full story
With high winds and low humidity over the weekend a third wildfire was discovered burning in Carbon County Sept. 10. Given the intensity of the new blaze, and its distance from the Walden, Colo. incident command post (ICP) combating the Broadway and Beaver Creek Fires, Forest Service Public Affairs Officer Aaron Voos said there has been discussion of establishing a separate ICP in Encampment. That ICP would manage the new fire as well as the Broadway blaze. The Snake Fire, as it has been... Full story

By 1:30, we'd paid the check at La Marguerite and started making our way toward the train station two kilometers away. Imagining we were under some sort of time constraint (ha), we split into two groups with Rebecca and David biking ahead and me walking my bike beside Barry, who had opted not to bring his. His was a prescient decision. I'd seen Bobo-Dioulasso's train station many times from afar, but this was my first time inside. In a city with little to offer in terms of competition, it's an... She said while she had heaped praise on the Panth... Full story
Sandwiched between two four-and-a-half-hour trips on a school bus, the Saratoga High School Panthers football team suffered a resounding 58-12 loss to Lusk Sept. 9. “It wasn’t a very fun bus ride back home,” said first year coach Kegan Willford. A big factor in the lopsided outcome was how much difficulty the Panthers had holding onto the ball, Willford said. He said the Panthers had five turnovers in the first half, including four fumbles and one interception and “Our defense was just put int... Full story

As described by local author C.J. Box, the road to becoming an internationally best-selling novelist can be long and potholed. Like many faint two tracks winding through the checkerboard, that road can lead to unexpected delights, or peter out in the wastelands, leaving the ambitious motorist in the middle of nowhere with a busted oil pan. With a trivia event celebrating his creations going on in the background, Box sat down for a 15 minute interview with the Sun Aug. 13. Sporting his trademark... Full story
