An arc from a welding machine started a fire at Saratoga Forest Management (Saratoga Mill) early Wednesday morning. According to Saratoga dispatch, the fire department was called out at 1:39 a.m. Wednesday. “It could have been much worse,” Saratoga Mill’s owner Gary Ervin said. “Fortunately, we keep the area pretty clean.” The millwright was working the night shift welding a small piece on the board edger end feed table, Ervin said. “It only was about an inch weld, but it wouldn’t have mattered...
Thirty years is a long time in between Editorial Leadership Awards. When Gary Stevenson told me we needed to write more editorials three years ago, my response was: "We are too diverse to agree on anything." You should hear some of the arguments we have in this office. No matter who the reporters are, we don't always agree, but we started finding ways to agree on something. This year, we finally brought home the Editorial Leadership award for our work in 2015. The last one was in 1986, when...
When a coach has four or five players who are scoring in double digits, it makes it difficult for the opposing team to figure out who to guard. "That's a sign of a good team," head coach Clint Bromley said. The Encampment Tigers are pretty happy to have three wins behind them from the weekend, Bromley said. The Tigers (2-0 conference, 12-1 overall) beat North Park 88-44 Thursday night. The highest score the Tigers had to date was 85, which is the highest score in the state until the Tigers...
After coming off a homecoming sweep, the Lady Tigers are going to have a challenging week as they play Little Snake River (LSRV) and Rock River. While both Encampment and LSRV have only suffered one loss each, to Cokeville, Rock River beat Cokeville earlier in the season. The Encampment Lady Tigers (1-1 conference, 11-12 overall) are going to have to work hard this weekend as they try to hold their No. 2 spot in conference against Little Snake River (1-1, 10-4). Saturday will be the first time...
The winning fish wasn't the biggest fish that has come out of Saratoga Lake, but with a score of 35, it was the winner for this year. Tammy Guerra, of Parker, Colo., could be the first woman in the 33-year history of the fishing derby to win the tournament. The chamber has records back to 1993, and the only woman to place in the top three was Encampment's Maureen Zeiger, who won third place in 2012. Not only does Guerra have a $2,000 check to take home, she has a pretty good fish story to go wit...
The Tigers had a successful weekend against conference foes Cokeville Panthers and Farson/Eden Pronghorns. One impressive shot in the game against the Pronghorn game was made by Gage Bartlett who sank a half court shot for 3 points in the final second of the first quarter. "It's something the boys all do at the end of practice," Encampment head coach Clint Bromley said, "but this is the first time any one of the boys have made it." The Tigers proved they do not get too excited when they are...
The Encampment Lady Tigers (1-1 conference, 8-2 overall) split their weekend with one heartbreaking loss against the Cokeville Lady Panthers (2-0, 7-5) and a win against the Farson-Eden Pronghorns (0-2, 5-7). The loss puts them second in conference, but they still have more than a month to work on their skills before regionals at the end of February. The ball was hitting the bucket, but just wasn't going in, which was obviously frustrating for the girls. Despite the 42-33 loss to Cokeville, the...
Bill Gathmannn, DKRW’s Senior Vice President for Finance, said that there hasn’t been much development at a Jan. 6 meeting. “Our hearts are in it,” Gathmannn said after saying that the coal to liquefaction project doesn’t work with $35 per barrel oil prices. Six months before, Gathmannn had stated that the oil industry doesn’t always look at the short term picture of oil prices, but since then, the price per barrel has plummeted, according to reports in the oil industry. With the drop in oil...
The Encampment Tigers (7-1) played hot in the second and fourth quarters to get ahead of the Saratoga Panthers (1-5) Friday night at the Saratoga gym. "A loss is tough to swallow, especially to a rivalry. But, there were a lot of good things that happened in the game," Saratoga's head coach Jason Williams said. "It's kind of like playing your brother in one-on-one. You hate to lose to him, but if you are going to lose to somebody, that's not always the worst thing." "We played them close for...
The Encampment Lady Tigers (7-1) nearly shut out the Saratoga Lady Panthers (3-2) in the first quarter of the game Friday night. With less than a minute left in the first quarter, the Lady Panthers scored their first two points. The Lady Tigers continued to outplay the Lady Panthers in the second quarter, but not without the Lady Panthers getting the first score in the second quarter. The Panthers scored a 3-pointer early in the second quarter, making it a 10-point game before the Tigers had a...
Coming out of winter break, conditioning was a bit of a concern for the Encampment Tigers when they played the Laramie sophomores Jan. 5 in Laramie. The Tigers still pulled out an impressive win of 66-40 against the Laramie Plainsmen. “(It was) a good game to come off the break and play,” Head Coach Clint Bromley said. “The boys played hard and have started to gel a little better on the court. “The kids stepped up,” Bromley said, adding, he was happy with the performance during this time of y...
The Encampment Lady Tigers started the new year off with a win against the Laramie Sophomores 55-35. It was a typical coming out of break game, Encampment’s head coach Amy Clay said. At half time, the Tigers were up 28-21. By the third quarter, they came in swinging, Clay said. They outscored the Plainsmen 17-5. Clay said it is difficult to prepare playing against the Laramie Sophomores, because the team literally changes from year to year. The Lady Tigers came prepared to play a zone defense a...
Laura Morrow believes that her year had a positive start, even though her building, Laura M Gallery, was broken into early New Year's morning. "What a way to start the year, but it is good to have a good team in place and the support of a community," Morrow said. Morrow said she received a phone call around 3 a.m. New Year's Day and just assumed it was a prank call. Then the phone rang again. It was her security alarm network notifying her of a potential break-in at the gallery. Morrow said whil...
Friday night, the Saratoga Panthers host the Encampment Tigers for the first time in the 2015/2016 basketball season and the Saratoga Middle High School Student Council is hoping to pack the gym. It is also the first home game for the Panthers and Lady Panthers. Heather Bartlett, a student council sponsor at Saratoga Middle High School, said the student council is planning two “Pack the Gym” nights. One is for the first home game and the other is for the last home game against Lusk on Feb. 19....
Over Christmas break, Alyssa Barkhurst made a huge step in her athletic future and signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Central Wyoming College (CWC). Earlier in the fall, she had gone on a campus tour with Deborah Burke, the Encampment K-12 school counselor, and had tried out for CWC the week after Encampment won the state championship. Barkhurst received a verbal offer the week before and had been thinking about attending CWC and talking to the coach. It was not the only team she h...
Medicine Bow Fuel and Power LLC, (MBFP) a subsidy of DKRW, is holding its semi-annual meeting from 6-7:30 p.m., Jan. 5 at the Medicine Bow Community Center. A person cannot be much more cowboy than Sam Platts, who with his band, sings old time Country and Western music, lives in a town called Pony and works full-time on a ranch. He will bring his country music to the Platte Valley Community Center Thursday from 7-10 p.m. Platts is no stranger to small town living, as he grew up in Saratoga and is returning this week to play at the Platte Valley Community Center for the Valley Service Organization's (VSO) New Year's Eve party. Platts, along with his...
Well, it is resolution time ... again. And like many others I am a resolution person. I usually break them all. I don’t intend to at the beginning of the year, but it just happens. Last year, I wrote my resolutions based on a top 10 from research done by the University of Scranton. They were the normal – lose weight, get organized, attain financial balance, live life to its fullest, stay fit, learn something exciting, quit smoking, help others with their resolution, more family time. So, thi...
The loss to St. Stephens knocked the Lady Tigers down a notch on WyoPreps, but only by one vote and it is early in the season. Despite the loss to St. Stephens, the Tigers had a very good weekend of basketball before winter break, according to head coach Amy Clay. “I am pleased with the great attitude each of them display,” Clay said. In the game against Kaycee, Alyssa Barkhurst scored 18 points, Cassidy Little 9 points, Michiah Pantle 8 points, Paige Powell 4 points and Noelle Peterson 3 poi...
The Platte Valley Lutheran Church is starting the new year with a new pastor – Rev. Randolph Schnack. He will be installed at 4 p.m. Jan. 3 at the Platte Valley Lutheran Church. Because of the installment ceremony, there will not be a morning worship. The church works on a call system and when he was asked to come to Saratoga, he had never heard of the town. “When the congregation called me, I looked into Saratoga,” Schnack said. “Everything looked really wonderful and I really liked the ide...

The Encampment boys basketball team suffered one loss over the weekend during the Dogger Invitational, but they are still ranked No. 1 in their conference with a 5-1 overall record. Saturday, the Tigers came back to beat St. Stephens 85-50 and then Guernsey Sunrise 57-23. Kaycee is listed third in the 1A Northeast Conference and, but their record i...
The Encampment Lady Tigers lost to St. Stephens this weekend at the Dogger Invitational in Lingle-Fort Laramie 43-55, but brought home two wins from Kaycee 52-37 and Guernsey/Sunrise 55-16. The Lady Tigers are at 5-1 overall, and before the tournament were ranked No. 1 by WyoPreps. They are still holding the No. 1 spot in their conference, with Farson/Eden right behind them with an overall record of 5-1. St. Stephens is also at the top of their conference with a 4-1 overall record. The Dec. 15...
Last Thursday, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) held an open house to seek public input on the North Savery Project. The project is located in the northwest corner of the Sierra Madre mountain range and was identified by Gov. Matt Mead as priority for treatment because of impacts from insects and disease under the 2014 Farm Bill and the amended Healthy Forests Restoration Act. Part of the project includes vegetation treatments using timber sales. Many of the trees in the area were affected by the...
Plans to rehabilitate the runway at Shively Field began Dec. 9 with a meeting between Dave Schultz, of Sage Engineering, and the Saratoga Airport Board. There will not be any changes to the position or the length of the runway, Schultz said. The meeting jumpstarted the planning process, Schultz explained. In order to get everything organized, the board needed to hear from the experts at Sage Engineering on steps to ensure they qualify for Wyoming Aviation Capital Improvement Program funds. It...
