    Former Saratoga Sun editor, Joe Elder, was affirmed as the Town of Saratoga’s new town treasurer last Tuesday by the Saratoga Town Council. In a unanimous vote, the town council approved Elder’s appointment without discussion.     The annual Donald E. Erickson Memorial races have been a successful fundraiser for the Saratoga Lions Club, president Gary Widemshek said. The money from the fundraiser is basically used for high school scholarships and vision and eyeglass needs for those who need help. “Money is raised through sponsorships, the Calcuttas and gate admission fees,” Widemshek said.     Once a year, trackside betting is legal in Saratoga, thanks to the Saratoga Lions Club and the Chariot Races. Race fans and bettors line up along the track at Buck Springs Arena to cheer on their favorite team. The quarter-mile track is filled with up to six horses pulling three drivers.     Normally, 50 to 60 cakes are auctioned off after the homecoming game at Encampment School. After hearing about frustration from residents unable to match high bids and support the athletic scholarship, Encampment Principal Mike Erickson encouraged more cakes be made for the auction so there were cakes available at and below the $100 range.     Don Goodspeed is legally blind, but when he leans in close to look at his wife, Shirley, there is a twinkle in his eye. On Monday, Will Schultz, G&F biologist, shared data compiled after the 2011 harvest.     The Saratoga Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce raised a gross of $8,785 at this year’s Festival of Trees.     An idea that was tossed around at a Saratoga Recreation Commission earlier this year saw success Nov. 29. “Ladies Night Out” attracted 55 paying customers, Lisa Burton, Saratoga recreation director, said.
