  • A big day at Big Creek

    Contributed By Liz Wood|Aug 21, 2019

Native American history was the subject on the Grand Encampment Museum Trek with a visit to war lodges, the Coffin Bison Kill site and around 72 tipi rings east of Riverside Saturday. Tour guides Mark Dunning and Chilly Rollison shared their knowledge of life in the 1850s on what is now the Quill Ranch, Big Creek Ranch and Six Mile Gap on in the Routt National Forest. Trekkers crossed the Cherokee Trail on the Quill Ranch on the way to the war lodges located in a grove of trees on the Big Creek...

  • Burial benefits require Vets to plan

    Contributed By Liz Wood|Nov 9, 2016

No one likes to think about death, but if a veteran wants to be buried with military rights, or in a national cemetery, pre-planning is a must. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has a website which includes information about national cemeteries, preparing in advance, donating burial flags and burial benefits for veterans buried in a private cemetery. To insure eligibility of burial in a VA cemetery, discharge papers are required. Family members should be made of aware of where these papers are kept. The discharge papers are...

  • So long, it's been a good ride

    Liz Wood|Feb 24, 2016

You thought you got rid of me, didn’t you? Well, Erik had his chance to say his goodbye last week, and there wasn’t enough room left for me. It is coincidental that I am leaving the Saratoga Sun now. I started the Saratoga Sun when my son Garry was going through another traumatic time of his life. In May 2005, I started working as an inserter. In July of 2005, the bookkeeper was diagnosed with breast cancer and I was asked to take over the bookkeeping tasks as well. In September 2005, I started...

  • Olson enjoys volunteering in role as Miss Wyoming

    Liz Wood|Feb 24, 2016

Giving out awards and posing with the biggest fish of the weekend is not the most glamorous thing Autumn Olson has done since being crowned Miss Wyoming USA, but she was still all smiles. Olson was the celebrity guest during fishing derby Jan. 16 and 17. She was crowned Miss Wyoming USA last fall and has been busy since. Olson was raised in Saratoga and attended school in Encampment. She was known for her killer spikes that were set up by her younger sister, Aspen. During her high school years,...

  • Lady Tigers split weekend

    Liz Wood and Patrick Cossel|Feb 24, 2016

The Encampment Lady Tigers (2-3, 13-4) kept the Rock River Lady Longhorns at bay for the first quarter only allowing the Longhorns to score 2 points to their 15 in the quarter Thursday night. During the second quarter the Tigers outpaced the Longhorns and ended the half 24-8. McKenzie Powell scored 6 of her 9 points in the quarter. The Encampment Tigers went into the third quarter just as hot with the Longhorns trying their best to keep up. Even though the Longhorns outscored the Lady Tigers in...

  • Encampment boys win two out of three

    Liz Wood|Feb 24, 2016

Kicking their weekend off against Walden, the Encampment boys (5-0, 16-1) won 59-37. "This was a great team game with everyone getting involved in the scoring. Encampment controlled the boards 34 to 21 and that was the biggest difference in the game," said Coach Clint Bromley. Gage Bartlett had 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Wyatt Cox followed with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Guy Erickson had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Jared Stewart had 9 points, 7 rebounds, 2...

  • Encampment boys ranked No. 1 in conference week before regionals

    Liz Wood|Feb 17, 2016

This week marks the end of the regular season for the Encampment Tigers (5-0 conference, 16-1 overall) and barring any unseen upsets, they will be entering into to post season as the No. 1 seed at regionals Feb. 25-27. With one conference game left this week against the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers (1-3, 6-12 one score missing), it should prove to be an interesting game in Baggs Friday night, as the Rattlers will surely do their best to upset the Encampment Tigers. If numbers are...

  • Memories of Dave Starr

    Liz Wood|Feb 3, 2016

Many people may have not recognized David Starr by his name, but it is likely that everyone in the Platte Valley interacted with him at one time or another. Dave passed away Dec. 13, 2015. He worked the night shift at Kum & Go in Saratoga. He always greeted every one with a smile. That was how Dave was, John Zeiger, long-time friend and sometimes co-worker of Dave’s. John and Dave knew each other for close to 50 years. Dave was a couple of years ahead of John in school, but the friendship b...

  • The final salute

    Liz Wood|Feb 3, 2016
    1

In November, a special friend of mine passed away. He was a comrade in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6125. The VFW had the honor of giving him his final send off – with a 21-gun salute. What made it more endearing was his grandniece playing taps at the end of the ceremony. H.R. (Bob) Herring, was one of 16 children, some of whom still live in the Platte Valley. The first time I met Bob was at a VFW meeting. Dick Ament had invited me to come down and I sat next to Bob’s wife Bobbie. She p...

  • Encampment firmly holds on to No. 1 conference spot

    Liz Wood|Feb 3, 2016

The Encampment Tigers proved this weekend they are a force to be reckoned with, even though Encampment Coach Clint Bromley felt the team could have played better. Sickness and injuries have prevented the Tigers (3-0 conference, 14-1 overall) from playing at their best, but it didn't keep them from winning against Rock River (1-2, 5-10) Friday night. In the 58-18 blowout, the Tigers dominated the Longhorns in Rock River. KeeGan Johnson led scoring with 22 points. He also had eight rebounds, four...

  • Tigers win on road, loses at home

    Liz Wood|Feb 3, 2016

The Encampment Lady Tigers split their games over the weekend and with the loss dropped to No. 3 in the 1A Southwest Conference. The Encampment team (1-2 conference, 12-3 overall) now has a good idea of what they will have to work on to get ready for regionals at the end of the month. In the Rock River game, Encampment dominated the Longhorns, with Alyssa Barkhurst putting up more nearly as many points as the entire Longhorn team. In the 48-27 win, Barkhurst scored 25 points. Her game record is...

  • Mill fire contained to one machine

    Liz Wood|Jan 27, 2016

An arc from a welding machine started a fire at Saratoga Forest Management (Saratoga Mill) early Wednesday morning. According to Saratoga dispatch, the fire department was called out at 1:39 a.m. Wednesday. “It could have been much worse,” Saratoga Mill’s owner Gary Ervin said. “Fortunately, we keep the area pretty clean.” The millwright was working the night shift welding a small piece on the board edger end feed table, Ervin said. “It only was about an inch weld, but it wouldn’t have mattered...

  • Bringing home the 'big cup'

    Liz Wood|Jan 27, 2016

Thirty years is a long time in between Editorial Leadership Awards. When Gary Stevenson told me we needed to write more editorials three years ago, my response was: "We are too diverse to agree on anything." You should hear some of the arguments we have in this office. No matter who the reporters are, we don't always agree, but we started finding ways to agree on something. This year, we finally brought home the Editorial Leadership award for our work in 2015. The last one was in 1986, when...

  • Tigers rack up three wins for homecoming

    Liz Wood|Jan 27, 2016

When a coach has four or five players who are scoring in double digits, it makes it difficult for the opposing team to figure out who to guard. "That's a sign of a good team," head coach Clint Bromley said. The Encampment Tigers are pretty happy to have three wins behind them from the weekend, Bromley said. The Tigers (2-0 conference, 12-1 overall) beat North Park 88-44 Thursday night. The highest score the Tigers had to date was 85, which is the highest score in the state until the Tigers...

  • Lady Tigers storm through homecoming

    Liz Wood|Jan 27, 2016

After coming off a homecoming sweep, the Lady Tigers are going to have a challenging week as they play Little Snake River (LSRV) and Rock River. While both Encampment and LSRV have only suffered one loss each, to Cokeville, Rock River beat Cokeville earlier in the season. The Encampment Lady Tigers (1-1 conference, 11-12 overall) are going to have to work hard this weekend as they try to hold their No. 2 spot in conference against Little Snake River (1-1, 10-4). Saturday will be the first time...

  • Third time's a charm:

    Liz Wood|Jan 20, 2016

The winning fish wasn't the biggest fish that has come out of Saratoga Lake, but with a score of 35, it was the winner for this year. Tammy Guerra, of Parker, Colo., could be the first woman in the 33-year history of the fishing derby to win the tournament. The chamber has records back to 1993, and the only woman to place in the top three was Encampment's Maureen Zeiger, who won third place in 2012. Not only does Guerra have a $2,000 check to take home, she has a pretty good fish story to go wit...

  • Tigers win first two conference contests

    Liz Wood|Jan 20, 2016

The Tigers had a successful weekend against conference foes Cokeville Panthers and Farson/Eden Pronghorns. One impressive shot in the game against the Pronghorn game was made by Gage Bartlett who sank a half court shot for 3 points in the final second of the first quarter. "It's something the boys all do at the end of practice," Encampment head coach Clint Bromley said, "but this is the first time any one of the boys have made it." The Tigers proved they do not get too excited when they are...

  • Lady Tigers split first conference games

    Liz Wood|Jan 20, 2016

The Encampment Lady Tigers (1-1 conference, 8-2 overall) split their weekend with one heartbreaking loss against the Cokeville Lady Panthers (2-0, 7-5) and a win against the Farson-Eden Pronghorns (0-2, 5-7). The loss puts them second in conference, but they still have more than a month to work on their skills before regionals at the end of February. The ball was hitting the bucket, but just wasn't going in, which was obviously frustrating for the girls. Despite the 42-33 loss to Cokeville, the...

  • DKRW's hopes sink with low oil prices

    Liz Wood|Jan 13, 2016

Bill Gathmannn, DKRW’s Senior Vice President for Finance, said that there hasn’t been much development at a Jan. 6 meeting. “Our hearts are in it,” Gathmannn said after saying that the coal to liquefaction project doesn’t work with $35 per barrel oil prices. Six months before, Gathmannn had stated that the oil industry doesn’t always look at the short term picture of oil prices, but since then, the price per barrel has plummeted, according to reports in the oil industry. With the drop in oil...

  • Tigers top Panthers with strong finish

    Liz Wood and Erik Gantt|Jan 13, 2016

The Encampment Tigers (7-1) played hot in the second and fourth quarters to get ahead of the Saratoga Panthers (1-5) Friday night at the Saratoga gym. "A loss is tough to swallow, especially to a rivalry. But, there were a lot of good things that happened in the game," Saratoga's head coach Jason Williams said. "It's kind of like playing your brother in one-on-one. You hate to lose to him, but if you are going to lose to somebody, that's not always the worst thing." "We played them close for...

  • Lady Tigers control perimeter, game

    Liz Wood and Erik Gantt|Jan 13, 2016

The Encampment Lady Tigers (7-1) nearly shut out the Saratoga Lady Panthers (3-2) in the first quarter of the game Friday night. With less than a minute left in the first quarter, the Lady Panthers scored their first two points. The Lady Tigers continued to outplay the Lady Panthers in the second quarter, but not without the Lady Panthers getting the first score in the second quarter. The Panthers scored a 3-pointer early in the second quarter, making it a 10-point game before the Tigers had a...

  • Tigers start 2016 with a 26-point win

    Liz Wood|Jan 13, 2016

Coming out of winter break, conditioning was a bit of a concern for the Encampment Tigers when they played the Laramie sophomores Jan. 5 in Laramie. The Tigers still pulled out an impressive win of 66-40 against the Laramie Plainsmen. “(It was) a good game to come off the break and play,” Head Coach Clint Bromley said. “The boys played hard and have started to gel a little better on the court. “The kids stepped up,” Bromley said, adding, he was happy with the performance during this time of y...

  • Lady Tigers start new year with win

    Liz Wood|Jan 13, 2016

The Encampment Lady Tigers started the new year off with a win against the Laramie Sophomores 55-35. It was a typical coming out of break game, Encampment’s head coach Amy Clay said. At half time, the Tigers were up 28-21. By the third quarter, they came in swinging, Clay said. They outscored the Plainsmen 17-5. Clay said it is difficult to prepare playing against the Laramie Sophomores, because the team literally changes from year to year. The Lady Tigers came prepared to play a zone defense a...

  • Alarm rings in New Year

    Liz Wood|Jan 6, 2016

Laura Morrow believes that her year had a positive start, even though her building, Laura M Gallery, was broken into early New Year's morning. "What a way to start the year, but it is good to have a good team in place and the support of a community," Morrow said. Morrow said she received a phone call around 3 a.m. New Year's Day and just assumed it was a prank call. Then the phone rang again. It was her security alarm network notifying her of a potential break-in at the gallery. Morrow said whil...
