Saturday, at the Child Passenger Safety inspection, the Vyvey's learned why. • Web Exclusive: Fishing in healing waters: Veterans enjoy a day of fishing in the Platte Valley

    Liz Wood|Jul 3, 2013

When a wounded soldier returns from war, life is anything but normal. Regardless of the wound, whether obvious or hidden, it takes years to recover from the physical and emotional scars. No one is more aware of that than Tony Seahorn, a Vietnam veteran. This year was the third year that Platte Valley Trout Unlimited (PVTU), a group that Seahorn is active in, has invited wounded warriors to participate in a two-day fishing expedition. The first day is spent at Upper Cedar Creek Ranch, where host... Full story

  • From the Hip: Teachings of the tent

    Liz Wood|Jun 19, 2013

I love to travel, whether it is across the country, around the state or just in the Platte Valley. The nomad gene comes from my father’s side of the family. His family was known for packing up the tent in their younger days and traveling clear across the country to camp out in a forest. When I was growing up, my dad would take us to various places around Iowa. My mom worked on Saturdays and dad would load up the four of us and take us on a fun-filled, educational trip. During spring break and s...

  • Actions speak louder than words: Saratoga man remains volunteer advocate despite cancer, surgeries

    Liz Wood|Jun 12, 2013

“Every time I walk, my tongue wags,” Marty Huntley said. It is a sense of humor that has kept Marty going through four surgeries and three bouts of squamous cell carcinoma. The most recent surgery was on July 14, 2011, when muscle tissue from his leg was used to rebuild his tongue after most of his cancerous tongue was removed. He was in surgery for 13 hours and has been fed through feeding tubes known as g-tubes and j-tubes, which were inserted directly into Huntley’s stomach and jejunum. For t...

  • Bouncing back from bark beetles

    Liz Wood|Jun 5, 2013

The forest is resilient. That was the message from the United State Forest Service and The University of Wyoming Thursday night at the Platte Valley Community Center on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests. The dead trees are hard to miss when traveling through the forest by vehicle. Brent Ewers, an associate professor with the University of Wyoming Department of Botany, said there is a mosaic of living and dead trees in the forest, which has always been the case. Ewers is part of a research...

  • From the Hip: Time for inspiration

    Liz Wood|May 22, 2013

Mother’s Day weekend I traveled to Nashville to visit my son Garry, his fiancé Mirthe (Meur-tah) and meet her parents. Nashville is a music lover’s paradise. On Broadway there is live music in every bar almost any time of the day. On the sidewalks, musicians are busking. Visitors are surrounded by talent. I stayed at the hostel Garry is working for. For those of you who have not stayed in a hostel, it is a unique experience. You meet a lot of people. Your neighbors become quick friends. At the...

  • Wyoming Game and Fish reports sampling of trout

    Liz Wood|Apr 24, 2013

Last May, the Wyoming Game and Fish found a nice surprise in Saratoga Lake. Iowa Darters were found on education day. “This is good news,” fish biologist Steve Gale told the Trout Unlimited audience April 4. Iowa Darters have been found in only two places in Wyoming since the 1980s, Gale said, so to see them get into places they haven’t been before is a good thing. In July, the Game and Fish sampled the fish population in the Laramie Region. This region covers 13,000 square miles, 5,500 strea...

  • Boston bombing hits close to home

    Liz Wood|Apr 17, 2013

My son Garry used to live in Boston, so when I heard news of two explosions going off in Boston Monday, it caught my attention. I was at home recovering from surgery, watching TV and scanning through the news on the internet when I saw the headline breaking news. I did what every American probably did; I turned the station to my favorite news station and watched the news for the rest of the afternoon. Wars exist everywhere. We watch them from our living room and then we go back to our business.... Full story

On April 3, Wyoming State Engineer Patrick T. Tyrrell announced the call on the Platte River remains in effect. • Town, Stevens can't agree to disagree: Two points of contention separate parties

    Liz Wood|Apr 3, 2013

It looks like the town of Saratoga and Randy Stevens may be headed back to court. On March 20, Stevens filed a motion to enforce a settlement agreement. The motion stated “Plaintiff has not offered any explanation as to why it has failed or refused to execute the Stipulated Order.” The motion goes on to say that the plaintiff has offered a counter-proposed Stipulated Order that does not conform to the terms agreed to by the parties on Jan. 4, 2013. Mayor John Zieger told the Saratoga Sun tha...

  • Club needs volunteer boost

    Liz Wood|Apr 3, 2013

A group that has been supporting student athletes for years is in need of some help itself. The Saratoga High School Booster Club is short on people. “We have great financial support,” treasurer Jan Young said, “but we need bodies.” The Booster Club has been short of volunteers for several years now, and with President Gayle Batemen and Young stepping down, the group is shrinking more. “We only meet once a month and the meetings last around 45 minutes to an hour,” Young said.
