As the sun rises over the Cow Creek, Jim Miller has already checked on the calves, made a few phone calls and is putting hay in the feeder for the heifers. Jim and his wife Shirley run a 300-head cow/calf operation. The steer calves are shipped to Kansas in the fall where they are eventually marketed to Japan. With calves getting shipped to Japan, Jim is meticulous in recording when the calves are born, tagged and inoculated. Jim said he feels fortunate to have found the niche market in Japan ea...

The Saratoga Town Council approved the mayor to sign a contract for a LiDAR survey of Saratoga in the amount of $34,000. That amount will be divided between the budgets of the streets, water, planning and sewer departments. The amount taken from each department’s fund is $8,500. The final product would depend on weather conditions, but is expected to be complete by the end of April. Mayor Ed Glode explained to the audience that the LiDAR survey is an integral tool for updating the flood map f...
The Corbett Medical Foundation, Dr. Dean Bartholomew and Deseret Health and Rehab have worked in concert to create an end-of-life-care facility for patients in the Platte Valley who want to stay close to home in their last days. It's not the first time the subject has come up, said Mike Glode who serves on the Corbett Medical Foundation Board. "Dean has been doing a really good job with end-of-life-care," Glode said. He knows from experience. Glode's dad John suffered a stroke and received... Full story

Barkhurst said she was struggling the first half and the coaches kept telling her during the huddle,...

Representatives from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (Game & Fish) gave their annual report on the Platte Valley Mule Deer Initiative (PVMDI) Thursday night at the Saratoga Town Hall. Rick King, the Regional Wildlife Supervisor with the Game and Fish Laramie Regional office, said 2016 will be a big year as the third year of the limited quota ends in 2015 and the Game & Fish will have a bigger effort to find out what hunters think of the limited quota. The PVMDI was established in 2011 to...
Joe Parsons, Supervisory Resource Specialist with the Saratoga-Encampment-Rawlins Conservation District (SERCD) in Saratoga, said two studies - the Platte River Basin Plan Study (Basin Plan) and the Upper North Platte Level I Watershed Study - are two separate studies, but are not mutually exclusive of each other. The Basin Plan covers a larger portion of state drainages and since the water rights in the Platte Valley are allocated, the Basin Plan is used more for areas where the water rights...
When it mattered most, the Lady Tigers pulled out the win and that effort earned them a third place finish in the 1A West Conference Regionals. At state, their first opponent will be one they are familiar with – Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD#2) Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow (HEM), coached by Jackie Jones. HEM earned second place at the 1A East Regionals in Laramie last weekend. The match will be a tough one as HEM has an overall record of 17-6 and the Lady Tigers have an overall r...

Fourman scored 25 points and had 11 rebounds in the game against Lusk. Fourman didn’t find out about breaking her season record until three days after the pigtail game. “I never have been a person to keep track of the score,” Fourman said. When the senior player heard about her score she was still trying to deal...
The Encampment Tigers were still licking their wounds Monday after an upset that left them out of the state finals. “They are disappointed and moping around,” head coach Clint Bromley said of the Tigers. Bromley said it didn’t set well with the boys to go into regionals with a 19-4 record, have a great season and then not come out with a place in the state finals. The team started well against the Dubois Rams, picking up a win 69-52, Thursday night. The No. 1 seed in the Northwest Confe...
Have you wondered what a difference recycling make? For Knights of Columbus, it has allowed them to make an impact in the lives of many. The Knights of Columbus Snowy Range Council in Saratoga collects aluminum cans by placing trailers around town for residents to conveniently recycle. All recyclers have to do is put the cans in a trash bag and drop them off at two locations – one is at the American Legion, and the other location is at St. Ann’s Parish Hall. “Generally, we take in about $2,000 p...

Berger, who stated he opposed the four-day week in...
As February wanes, the high school basketball season winds down. Unfortunately, the Panthers’ season has already ended. This was my first season covering Panther basketball on a regular basis. It has been a real treat to watch and photograph these athletes this season. When I started covering basketball, I told the Lady Panther’s coach Scott Bokelman I knew very little about basketball. The only terms I knew were jump shot, layup and free throw. I had played basketball growing up, but never as... Full story
For the first time in several years, the Carbon Country School District No. 2 Speech Team competed at the Rawlins Speech meet rather than co-hosting it. Speech, like wrestling, is not an activity that the Saratoga Sun has the opportunity to take photos of because the meets and matches are located in a variety of places across the state that are rarely close to home. So when we learned the CCSD#2 students were competing in the Rawlins meet, we talked with coach Debbie Riker about covering the...
Jeff Streeter, Project Manager for the North Platte Valley Trout Unlimited, attended the Wyoming Water Commission Basin Plan meeting Jan. 27 to learn and to collaborate. With the Wyoming Water Commission collecting data on the use of water in the Platte River Basin Plan (Plan), Trout Unlimited (TU) has an interest in how much water flows in and out of the North Platte River. Streeter said that the good news for the Upper North Platte River is that it is of interest to the governor. In the...
Mayor Ed Glode said he came away from the River Restoration meeting last week with a good feeling. A sentiment that both Jeff Streeter with Trout Unlimited and Joe Parsons with the Saratoga-Encampment- Rawlins Conservation District (SERCD) echoed. Committees were formed to go forward with the long term project while considering short-term options. The plan has two different concepts that the committee is considering, Glode said. In the meantime, Glode is still weighing options on a short-term...

Saturday, the Panthers lost their chance as a No. 3 seed when they fell to Southeast 44-59, which put them in a pigtail game at home on Monday. Friday night, the Panthers hos...

Justine Fourman and Meredith Lincoln who almost always have double digits in scoring only scored 5 points between them in the game against the Southeast Cyclones....
Guy Jansa, of Jansa Apartments in Saratoga, pleaded with the Saratoga/Carbon County Impact Joint Powers Board (Water and Sewer Board), to not recommend Ordinance 829 as written to the Saratoga Town Council. Jansa argued the new rates would be a hardship on apartment owners like his mother, Nancy Jansa. The ordinance had beenreferred back to the Water and Sewer Board because of the turnover on the board. Three water and sewer board members had been elected to the governing body. Glee Johnson,...
The Saratoga planning commission received input from Mayor Ed Glode at its Feb. 10 meeting on changing the bylaws to allow the Saratoga Town Council appointed member to have a vote on the planning commission. The Saratoga Planning...
The new lease and rental fee for the Saratoga Airport Board was tabled for one more month because the new town attorney was still reviewing the leases, Lance Grubb reported to the board. Erickson and Roberts LLC was appointed as Saratoga’s town attorney at the Feb. 3 council meeting, replacing Tom Thompson. The new appointment has slowed the process of the leases. In December, Dave Worthington had questions about the new lease and rental fee, but the item was tabled. In January, the airport boar...
Four Encampment students are preparing to embark on a life-changing trip. Karie Russell, Tylr Kozelisky, Brett Ralston and McKenzie Powell plan to travel to Ecuador and volunteer at an orphanage. But first, they have to raise more than $11,000 for the trip. So far, they have raised $2,000 through raffles and fundraising and this month they are contacting local businesses and have opened an account on gofundme.com. The idea came from Encampment Spanish teacher Toby Ricks, who served a mission in...
