An old saying that has been adopted by the Encampment Lady Tigers Basketball Team is how fate tells the warrior, “You will not survive the storm.” The warrior replies, “I am the storm.” The Lady Tigers took that attitude to the court last weekend with a 3-0 overall record to begin their season. Friday, the Lady Tigers played the Rock River Longhorns at Hanna-Elk Medicine Bow Jr./Sr. High (HEM) gym, 43-20. Saturday morning they played the Hayden, Colo. Tigers and won that game 46-32. Saturday aft...
The Encampment Tigers dominated the Carbon County Classic last weekend starting their season 3-0 overall, beating Rock River 71-8, Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow Miners (HEM) 64-55, and Cheyenne South Freshmen 60-33. The Rock River Longhorns had some height on their team, but the Tigers had speed and experience. Leading with four seniors – Guy Erickson, Hunter Hammer, Jared Steward and KeeGan Johnson – the Longhorns did not have a chance on Friday. The teams played at the HEM gym. What mad...
Last year’s season ended in disappointment when the Encampment Tigers did not make it through regionals. “It is always our goal to make it to state,” the Tigers head coach Clint Bromley said. With eight players returning and eight new players added to the team, Bromley is still working to get the team playing together. “Things looked a little ratty this week. We are trying to put them together, but not quite there yet,” Bromley said. A huge loss to the team was Luke Pantle, who graduated...
For the first time in years, Encampment Lady Tigers Head Coach Amy Clay will have a deep bench. Seven newcomers are coming into the mix this season and they are not all freshmen, Clay said. With 14 team members and seeing the hard work the Lady Tigers are already putting into the season, Clay is pretty sure she can go eight or nine deep on the bench with the work she is seeing at practice. The team will start off against Rock River at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow...
The Saratoga Sun sat down with Mike Glode to talk about John Lunt, the long-time physician, who passed away in November. By the time this reporter had moved to Saratoga, Doc Lunt was no longer practicing medicine. He had retired for the second time and continued to be very involved in the community. When Doc Lunt moved to Saratoga, he had just retired as a surgeon in Denver and bought the Highline Ranch east of town. About the same time, the town of Saratoga had purchased the Corbett Clinic,...
The Encampment Lady Tigers were honored for the Volleyball 1A State Championship on Nov. 24 in an all-school assembly. Encampment K-12 School Principal Mike Erickson told the students there are lots of opportunities for them at Encampment School. Academics, the science fair, authors contests, competing in art, music and competing in sports are just a few of the opportunities available to the students. “There are all kinds of things that you can compete in,” Erickson said. At the beginning of the...
On Nov. 3, it was a normal Tuesday. We were working on the finishing touches of the Saratoga Sun. It was a little different for me as my youngest son Garry was having surgery that day. A simple hernia repair, nothing to worry about. He had put it off for two years, since he couldn’t afford to pay for the deductible. After I had my knee surgery done and had maxed out our out-of-pocket expense, I encouraged Garry to go to the doctor and get the hernia taken care of. His wife texted when he went i...
Imagine running 52 miles in the cold and snow. That is exactly what Jeremy Detterer will be doing the Saturday after Thanksgiving. He will not be alone though. Three other young people will be running different routes Saturday, but not as far. The foursome attended a convention in Casper earlier this fall and decided they wanted to help a missionary raise money to purchase a car and an amplifier for his work in West Africa. Jeremy is the strongest of the runners and challenged himself to run 52...
Carbon County Emergency Management Coordinator John Zeiger sent an email to the Saratoga Sun from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Cheyenne stating confidence is increasing the southeast region of Wyoming will see snow accumulations as early as Wednesday evening continuing through Thanksgiving Day. A strong pacific storm is expected to affect the Great Basin on Wednesday before lifting into Wyoming on Thursday, the notice from the NWS said. Snow is expected to develop from Rawlins to...
Curt Campbell was 17 years old when he joined the military. The Nuremberg trials were going on and he wanted to be a guard at those trials in 1948. The problem was the military wanted the guards to be 6 feet tall. Campbell was only 5 foot 7 inches. A couple of things were pushing him toward the military, Campbell said. His buddy's number was coming up to enter the draft. At 16, a judge told Campbell he had a terrible temper and asked him if he thought about using it somewhere useful - like the...
The Platte Valley fall sports season ended with all kinds of results. Cross Country placed second in the state. Our football team did not make it to the post season. The Saratoga Lady Panther Volleyball team had a great season, made it to regionals and fought hard to stay in. With the luck of the draw, they played the toughest teams in the conference, but they didn’t give up. To take Pine Bluffs to five sets is a real accomplishment. The Encampment Lady Tigers Volleyball team still have their s...
If the Encampment Lady Tigers play at state like they did at regionals, they will be coming home with a first place trophy. The Lady Tigers easily beat St. Stephens Friday morning 25-8, 25-10, 25-9. Friday night they played Cokeville, a team they are familiar with. They lost the first set 21-25, but followed up with three wins 25-20, 25-18, 25-17, for the match. Saturday afternoon, the Lady Tigers squashed Little Snake River Valley in the championship game 25-13, 25-12, 25-18. "I don't even...
Why not us? That phrase has been the Encampment Lady Tigers (5-0, 20-1 overall) mantra this season. And they have lived by that mantra on the court. As a team that has come together through the season with only one loss in their overall record, they are proving that this year, it just may be them. But head coach Robin O'Leary is still playing one game at a time. Friday, the Lady Tigers will compete in 2015 1A West Regional Volleyball Tournament in Lander. Their first opponent is St. Stephens,...
Saratoga Cross County Head Coach Rex Hohnholt had words of encouragement for his harriers Friday after they ran to qualify for state. They could spend a long day on the bus and compete in one last race before state or the team could try for their best times in Saratoga. Hohnholt chose to keep them in Saratoga. Friday, they travel to Sheridan before getting a night's rest and competing in the state championship. The team ran two miles, with Jeremy Detterer taking the lead at 13 minutes 48...
It is no secret that the Encampment Lady Tigers (5-0 conference19-1 overall) have a great support group in the town of Encampment. It should be no surprise when the boys lined up to have their chests painted with letters to spell out Tiger's Den in the last conference game of the season to show their support. It worked. The Lady Tigers went on to a win in three sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-23) with their most competitive county and conference foe, the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers (2-...
During their final practice before the tournament Saturday, the Encampment Lady Tigers junior high school volleyball team started saying "Bring it Back." They would huddle with the trophy in the middle and say "Bring it Back," according to head coach Sammy Baysinger. "It set the tone for the tournament," Baysinger said. Going in ranked third, the girls knew they would have to work hard to bring the trophy back. Encampment had a nearly flawless record last year when they brought the trophy home f...
The Encampment Lady Tigers came home with the first place trophy in the Wind River Tournament Saturday night, but they are still looking to improve their game. That makes head coach Robin O'Leary very happy. "Coach Catron and I discussed what we could improve on and when we were coming home on the bus, the girls were saying 'Hey coach, we need to work on this'," O'Leary said. To the coach, that means her players are not settling, even though they are ranked No. 1 in their conference and No. 2...
Jason Campbell told the audience at the dedication of the Kirsten Campbell Court that he was pretty sure his sister was not with them in spirit Oct. 7, as the Chicago Cubs were playing the Pittsburgh Pirates. "She is in Pittsburgh with a Budweiser at a Cubs game," Jason said. Jason was just as sure that his sister was present when his daughters were playing volleyball on the court. Oct. 7 was an emotional roller coaster for the Campbell family – as two dedications were performed to c...
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is also Fire Protection Week. On Wednesday, The Kirsten Campbell Court will be dedicated. I mention all of these, because each one has had an impact on my life, indirectly, but still an impact. Shortly after I moved to Saratoga, my maternal grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She cried when she told me. I remember that moment vividly and probably will for the rest of my life. I began self-examinations and months later, something was...
The Encampment Lady Tigers (3-0, 14-1) had a tough schedule last week, but they did not let that deter them from winning three matches on Sept. 29, Oct. 1 and 3. The first two matches were against non-conference foes, with Saturdays game against Cokeville (0-2, 9-10 scores missing), who is in the 1A Southwest conference with Encampment. The win against Cokeville was sweet, since the last time the teams played each other was at state, where Cokeville went on to take the state championship for...
Fast greens and a tough course in Wright kept the Saratoga Panthers from placing in the top three at state last weekend. Head coach Jared Mason is pretty happy with how the season went. The boys may have not won a trophy, but the coach heard plenty of compliments on how considerate and polite the Saratoga team was. “Coaches came up to me and said they enjoyed scoring the boys because they were so polite,” Mason said. Guy Erickson finished in a three-way tie for sixth place and qualified for all...
The Silver Spur Ranches hosted a firearms training event in August that attracted around 100 participants over a period of seven days. John Russo has been coming to Silver Spur Ranches for many years. He writes for a gun magazine, FMG Publications. Manufacturers have contracts with Silver Spur Ranches to test new rifles, and the writers come up to test and write about the new rifles. "That is how I got to know Dave (Sturm) and Silver Spur Ranches," Russo said. Russo is a firearms police trainer...
Hollywood celebrities were lining up at Brush Creek Ranch for actress Allison Williams' wedding Saturday night, but the real players in the Valley were at the Party on the Platte fundraiser. A packed house filled the Great Room at the Platte Valley Community Center (PVCC). Joe Elder, PVCC executive director, said more than $95,000 was raised Saturday night. A bid of $2,100 won a catered lunch with Gov. Matt Mead, while an antelope hunt went for $1,500. Auctioneer Jimmy Hinkle quipped that was...
