*Editor’s note: This is the first of a series on the Valley Village Childcare as it approaches its one year anniversary in their new building.* When the doors opened up in January at the Ray A. Packages are lining up the shelves at the Saratoga Post Office and it is bursting at the seams. According to the United States Postal Service (USPS), the busiest time of the year is Thanksgiving to January 1, when people are sending their annual Christmas cards and letters, packages to loved ones and orders from online companies. This year is no different, as the shelves at the Post Office in Saratoga are packed. The only problem is people are not picking up their packages and the post office...

  • Leaving a Legacy of Art

    Liz Wood|Dec 5, 2024

Visitors at Saratoga Middle High School are now greeted by a mural in the hallway before entering the school thanks to Noel Shepard’s art class from last year. It is the seniors’ gift to the school. Last year, Shepard had one student who helped her with the mural, Emily Gonzales. The mural is a brightly colored painting of evergreen trees with everything Wyoming and Saratoga - including Panther Paws. Study it long enough and the state bird, the Meadowlark, can be found. The bright yellow backgro...

But, if a person hasn’t been to Treasure Island in a few years, a lot of changes have taken place. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (G&F) had their annual meeting in Saratoga two weeks ago, and one of the activities included was the improvements at the Treasure Island public access area. Steve Gale, the Wyoming Game & F...

    Liz Wood|Nov 27, 2024

People hear the word BOCES, but all they know is it has something to do with education. It is much more than that according to Stacey Erickson, the BOCES director. BOCES stands for Board of Cooperative Education Services and was formed in September, 2012 when the Western Wyoming Community College (WWCC) and the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) Board of Trustees entered into a BOCES agreement. This allows the two entities to provide education services to children and adults including...

    Liz Wood|Nov 21, 2024

When a student graduates from high school, the goal of teachers, the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) and the Board of Trustees are to make sure each student is ready for the workforce, military, career or college. That is the purpose of the Postsecondary Readiness, which is used as an indicator to see if they are in fact ready. It measures the progress of juniors in high school and is dependent on students and what they have done to be ready for their next step after graduation....

  • Education begins at home

    Liz Wood|Nov 21, 2024

I was very fortunate to have a dad who was involved in my education. In the third grade, I struggled with math. I had trouble with the times table. Dad was an electrical engineer and worked for the State of Iowa almost all of his career. When I was in the third grade, teletypes were the form of communication back then and dad brought home scrap paper to write out problems for me to work on. Every night he would give me a half page of 8 ? by 11 paper which had several multiplication problems writ...

  • Diaz blocks out competition

    Liz Wood|Nov 21, 2024

A volleyball player has to be quick to react when blocking a ball. Sophie Diaz is not only good at blocking the ball, she is the best in the 1A Volleyball Class, and she placed third in the state of all classes. Diaz had 91 blocks during the volleyball season that ended earlier this month at regionals for the Saratoga Panthers. Diaz has been playing volleyball since the fifth grade, when they opened up camps for her age groups. Because of her height and the fact she is a pretty good blocker,...

    Liz Wood|Nov 21, 2024

Vanessa King was the only Cross Country runner to place at state this year - and she is a freshman. King placed eighth place at state, and when she first started running, it was because she was encouraged by her dad who had run cross country. He was placed at state. King didn’t have an interest in volleyball, so upon the urging of her dad, she ran cross country for the first time this year. During the season, she shaved off more than five minutes off her time. She ran the three-mile run in 2...

Little admits she checks her statistics after each game, so she can make goals for the next game because she wants to get better. “It’s not a priority for me, but it is fun to see how I did after each game,” Little said. She ended the season with 363 digs, which means she averaged more in the first three years than she did t...

  • Encampment Waiting on MOU for County Dispatch

    Liz Wood|Nov 21, 2024

The Encampment Town Council had a full agenda November 14. The most difficult decision was what to do about a resident who had ignored their request to stop building an overhang on his property. The overhang is encroaching on state property and was denied a building permit at the November 1, 2023 meeting of the Encampment Planning Commission. According to the minutes from that meeting, the resident had already begun to build the overhang, but did not provide sufficient evidence in his plan. The...

Last month, the Saratoga Elementary School (SES) Library became a miniature book store, thanks to SES librarian Luke Spiering, and Scholastics Book Fair. The students were able to shop for books they were interested in without leaving the area. Since there are not any bookstores in Saratoga, this gave students an opportunity to browse through books and toys related to books to see if they want to purchase them. The book fair was open during the school’s parent/teacher conference. The book f...

  • Lady Tigers Hold Their Own at State

    Liz Wood|Nov 14, 2024

Saturday morning the chance to place at State Volleyball slipped through the fingers of the Encampment Lady Tigers by 2 points. The fact that this team made it that far is an accomplishment in itself as the team had six starters with only three on the bench. Most of the teams they competed against at State had more players on their bench than the Tigers had on their team. Lady Tigers Head Coach Janice Peterson said she and assistant coach Annie Jordan were very impressed with how the players...
