    Joshua Wood|May 5, 2021

Saratoga’s student athletes traveled to central Wyoming on Saturday as they attended the Roy Peck Invitational in Riverton. With 20 girls teams and 16 boys teams, the competition was tough. Head Coach Rex Hohnholt’s track and field athletes, however, managed to find some placings. Girls at Riverton Beginning with track events, the 100 meter dash saw Savannah Wells finish with a time of 14.4 seconds and was followed by Olivia Everett with a time of 14.74 seconds and Jaden Campbell with a tim...

  • Personal bests at Peck

    Joshua Wood|May 5, 2021

Over the weekend, Encampment’s track and field athletes traveled to Riverton to compete in the Roy Peck Invitational. Though there were few placings for the small team at the large meet, there were some silver linings to be found. “This was a really big meet this week with some great competition,” said Head Coach Kegan Willford. “We had some of our athletes get some personal bests in this meet. It was good to see Amber (Stubbs) get a pre-qualifying time in the two-mile (run).” Girls at Rivert...

  • Mary Poppins a jolly holiday

    Joshua Wood|May 5, 2021

A spoonful of sugar may help the medicine go down, but it certainly wasn't needed for the production of "Mary Poppins" put on by the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) Drama Club. Despite having to postpone their production last year due to the pandemic, the drama club took to the stage of the Platte Valley Community Center Theater on April 29 for their rendition of the classic children's book series made popular by the 1964 Disney movie. The titular role of Mary Poppins is played by...

  • Puffer fish and sand pits

    Joshua Wood|Apr 28, 2021

Carbon County Road 351, also known as Seminoe Road, may be seeing far more traffic than normal. It also may be seeing more attention than normal. During the April 20 meeting of the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC), Kandis Fritz discussed a potential road use agreement for County Road 351 as well as potential grants for repairing the deteriorating road. Sand mines Fritz informed the commissioners that she had received a call the day before the meeting about potential hauling on...

  • No finer professional

    Joshua Wood|Apr 28, 2021

It was difficult to find a dry eye in the Medicine Bow Senior Center on April 20 as Carbon County Coroner Paul Zamora announced his resignation via letter to the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC). “It is with great sorrow and trepidation that I inform you of my decision to retire at the end of this month. This decision stems from the current treading of my illness,” wrote Zamora. “It is time to focus all my energy on treatment and a little fun.” The letter, read by Chairman John Johns...

  • Audits and grant applications

    Joshua Wood|Apr 28, 2021

With budget sessions beginning this week for the Saratoga Town Council, the search continues for an accounting firm to audit Fiscal Year 2019/2020. At the April 20 meeting of the governing body, Mayor Creed James stated he had been in contact with several firms since being informed by Carver Florek and James that they would not engage with the Town of Saratoga for a second year. In similar financial business, the town council discussed two different State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) grants...

  • Helping others succeed

    Joshua Wood|Apr 28, 2021

While the Saratoga/Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce has a new face as their CEO, it is one that should be familiar to Valley residents and business owners. Many people will probably remember Amanda Knotwell from her time working at the Saratoga branch of RNB State Bank for eight years. They also might recognize her with a white shirt and a whistle in her mouth, officiating volleyball games. Then again, they might know her from the Carbon County Fair helping her children groom their show...

  • Running into Outlaw Country

    Joshua Wood|Apr 28, 2021

Encampment High School's track and field athletes were able to fit two meets into their busy weekend, though the spring weather cut one of them short. On Friday, Encampment traveled to compete in the Pine Bluffs Invite and then, on Saturday, competed in Rawlins. "It was good to get two meets again this week," said Kegan Willford, head coach for Encampment Track and Field. "I was a little disappointed that we got rained out in Pine Bluffs and didn't get to finish the track meet." Despite the...

The track and field athletes of Saratoga High School had another meet close to home this weekend. On Saturday, Saratoga competed in Rawlins and, while there, Head Coach Rex Hohnholt's student athletes continued to place well in their respective events. Girls at Rawlins Beginning with track events, in the 100 meter dash Savannah Wells placed 3rd as she finished with a time of 14.61 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, meanwhile, Whitney Bennett placed 1st with a time of 28.31 seconds and Wells placed...

  • Wanting to give back

    Joshua Wood|Apr 28, 2021

Just two weeks after former Councilmember Bob Keel announced his resignation, the Saratoga Town Council was able to make an appointment to the vacant position. On April 20, Saratoga resident Ron Hutchins was sworn in by Mayor Creed James. This, however, was not the first time that Hutchins had submitted a letter of interest. When Councilmember D'Ron Campbell was re-appointed to the governing body, Hutchins had been one of three applicants-including Campbell-who interviewed with the council in...

  • Clearing the muddy waters

    Joshua Wood|Apr 21, 2021

As the Saratoga-Carbon County Impact Joint Powers Board (SCCIJPB) continues its pursuit of extremely delinquent accounts, potential changes to the municipal code may help streamline that process. During the April 13 meeting of the joint powers board, Director of Public Works Jon Winter presented the board members with changes to Saratoga Municipal Code 13.60.010 and 13.60.020. These two sections of the code pertain to delinquent charges and termination of services. When the SCCIJPB began to...

  • Energizing Rock Creek

    Joshua Wood|Apr 21, 2021

As Carbon County receives national, and international, attention for its embrace of wind energy, the influx of wind energy projects shows no sign of stopping. On April 6, Michael Svedeman, Senior Manager of Development for Invenergy, appeared before the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC) to discuss yet another upcoming wind project. Inevergy’s appearance before the county commissioners comes nearly two years since the Illinois-based company transferred ownership of the Ekola Flats a...

  • Subdividing Green Acres

    Joshua Wood|Apr 21, 2021

With construction having begun on the North Platte Valley Medical Center at 13th Street and Bridge Avenue, surrounding property has the potential to be of value. The closest property with the possibility to be developed is a five acre parcel on the east side of 13th Street owned by one person. On April 13, local business owner, and owner of that property, Randy Raymer appeared before the Saratoga Planning Commission with a preliminary subdivision plat. “I bought that whole seven acre parcel s...

  • Drink more water, you noodle!

    Joshua Wood|Apr 21, 2021

I really picked a heck of a week to reduce my caffeine consumption. Since I’ve been at the Saratoga Sun, it has not been uncommon for me to drink anywhere from three to five cups of coffee in a day. Often, if the pot is a day old and there’s still some coffee left, I’ll just reheat it and drink that. That’s not counting the two or three sodas I was drinking, either. Or the occasional double shot after a long meeting the night before. It’s not like I didn’t drink any coffee before this job, t... Full story

  • From two towers to one?

    Joshua Wood|Apr 21, 2021

Rehabilitation of a leaking, bolted water tank west of Saratoga appears to be off the table. Discussion of the tank came up during the April 14 meeting of the Saratoga-Carbon County Impact Joint Powers Board (SCCIJPB) with two vastly different estimates from two companies to repair the tank. For the past several years, the tank has had either massive water stains or large chunks of ice along its side. When the special election for the One Percent Specific Purpose Sales and Use Tax (6th penny tax...

  • Saratoga wins at Willford

    Joshua Wood|Apr 21, 2021

Saratoga didn't have to go very far this weekend as they hosted their annual track meet on Saturday. While at the Burt Willford Memorial Invite, a number of Head Coach Rex Hohnholt's student athletes placed well even while working against cooler temperatures. While two relay teams for the boys were able to prequalify for the state track meet, Whitney Bennett broke the very same school record she set just a week prior. Girls at Burt Willford Starting with the track events, Savannah Wells placed...

  • Encampment places well in Saratoga

    Joshua Wood|Apr 21, 2021

The student athletes of Encampment track and field didn't travel far this weekend to compete as they attended the Burt Willford Memorial Invite in Saratoga on Saturday. While Encampment had been scheduled to compete in Laramie on Friday, the winter-like weather that has plagued Wyoming recently led to Head Coach Kegan Willford forgoing the event. Likely a wise decision as his track and field athletes competed well in Saratoga, despite the cooler temperatures. "Overall, I thought our team...

  • Keel leads local church

    Joshua Wood|Apr 21, 2021

"I definitely feel that I'm supposed to be here doing this right now. It doesn't mean that I'm the best person or the most qualified, it just means that for some reason I was supposed to do this and I believe that. I know that to be true." Robert "Bob" Keel has taken on various roles in the community in recent years. He served on the Saratoga Town Council for two-and-a-half years, has coached youth and Saratoga Middle School basketball and is a physician assistant for Memorial Hospital of Carbon...

  • Saratoga Town Council declares vacancy

    Joshua Wood|Apr 14, 2021

Of the three individuals elected to the Saratoga Town Council in 2018, only one remains following the resignation of Councilmember Bob Keel on April 6. Keel, who was elected alongside Councilmember Jon Nelson and former mayor John Zeiger, had been absent in recent meetings of the governing body but was in attendance to announce his resignation. The announcement came under the council comments section of the meeting, with Keel reading from a prepared letter. "My time as a town council representat...

    Joshua Wood|Apr 14, 2021

Just two days after the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) Board of Trustees applied for a variance to their SMART Start Plan regarding the wearing of masks, it has been approved. During the April 7 special meeting of the Board of Trustees, the board voted 5-2 to apply for the variance. Board members Paul Clark and Joe Gaspari were the two nay votes while new board member Nick Wamsley was not in attendance. While Carbon County Public Health’s Amanda Brown, who was in attendance via Z...

  • Looking at strengths and weaknesses

    Joshua Wood|Apr 14, 2021

While the arrival of spring may have more people thinking about floods rather than fires, four recent events that began as controlled burns are showing just how dry things are before the spring runoff. During the April 6 meeting of the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC), the commissioners were informed about the recent events by Lenny Layman, Carbon County Emergency Manager, which took place on April 3. “We had three to four controlled burns that got out of control, three in the Baggs...

  • Here comes the Sun

    Joshua Wood|Apr 14, 2021

If you’re reading a physical copy of this week’s Saratoga Sun and you’ve made it to page 4, you’ve likely noticed that things are a little different. Change, it is said, is the only constant in life and that adage holds true for newspapers. Of course, the Sun is no stranger to change as it has seen staff come and go over the many years it has served the Platte Valley. In just the past 18 months, this paper has seen a number of changes. And now, one more. For the past several years, the Sun had...

    Joshua Wood|Apr 14, 2021

Wood’s Fields may continue to be the home for Platte Valley Little League (PVLL) despite previous discussions to rehabilitate and use the ball fields owned by the Town of Saratoga south of the Saratoga Library. Discussion over the use of the field and a potential long-term lease came about during the April 6 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council. The governing body also discussed their Fiscal Year 2019/2020 audit and received an update from Director of Public Works Jon Winter about the ongoing b...

  • County proposes joint road project with Saratoga

    Joshua Wood|Apr 14, 2021

Carbon County Road 504 and Pic Pike Road continue to be a point of discussion, though no longer due to, now lifted, weight restrictions on a Wyoming Highway 130 bridge. At the April 6 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council, Carbon County Commissioner Sue Jones joined Kandis Fritz, Carbon County road and bridge administrator, to discuss several entities working together for a future chip seal project. Those entities include Carbon County, the Saratoga Cemetery Board and the Upper Platte River Solid...

  • A weighty decision

    Joshua Wood|Apr 14, 2021

Haulers with oversize loads can expect to have their weight checked in the near future. Little more than a month after the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC) approved a resolution implementing weight restrictions on county roads, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office appeared before the commissioners on April 6 to request the purchase of four portable scales. As was reported previously (see “Paving the way” on page 2 of the February 24 Saratoga Sun), the commissioners approved Resol...
