  • Lessons learned in food service

    Joshua Wood|Aug 3, 2023

The county fair brings to mind a number of images: rodeos, a sense of community and parades. The same goes for the Carbon County Fair. Food trucks from near and far gather at the fairgrounds and seem to have their dedicated fans. The most popular place to get breakfast, lunch and dinner, though, seems to be the Carbon County Concessions building. It's common, during fair week, to see a line of customers extending from the order window. It's easy to see why when looking at the menu, which offers...

  • First-time Fowlers

    Joshua Wood|Aug 3, 2023

For one week, young people from all over Carbon County converge onto the country fairgrounds to show cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry. It was this last one which was on display Monday afternoon. Poultry is a broad term, though most may think of chickens when first hearing the word and it was mostly chickens which were in the showmanship portion of the Poultry Show. While, in other portions, the animals itself is judged it is a little different in showmanship as it’s the presenters who are...

  • John Lund: The Master of Reinvention

    Joshua Wood|Aug 3, 2023

In the Platte Valley, where there is no shortage of colorful characters, there wasn’t anyone quite like John Lund. John, who lived to the age of 92, was proof that it was never too late to reinvent for someone to reinvent themselves again and again and again. In his lifetime, John was a veteran, a University of Wyoming graduate, a civil engineer, a mountaineer and an archeologist. He was also a philosopher, a writer and a dear friend. He had a style all his own, usually wearing khaki-colored pan...

On July 28, the Rawlins Police Department announced in a press release they had issued a warrant for the arrest of Wyatt Fluty, 29, after he fled from the police. According to the press release, the Rawlins Police Department responded to a call about a suspicious person in an SUV at a business on Airport Road. When law enforcement arrived on the scene, an officer...

  • Second Arrest Made in Carbon County Fentanyl Deaths

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Jul 27, 2023

A 34-year-old man from Washington State was arrested in June in connection with one of three fentanyl deaths in Carbon County earlier this year. Marty Leroy Ervine is facing two felony counts of delivery of a controlled substance and one count of involuntary manslaughter in Carbon County according to documents filed in circuit court earlier on May 25. Ervine was arrested on June 5 on a warrant issued from Carbon County, according to an article originally published in the Kitsap Sun. The charge...

  • Expanded programs, new challenges

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Jul 27, 2023

Expenses presented from the recreation department were the catalyst for a conversation regarding bidding processes, approval policies and the spending of public money during the July 18 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council. Councilmember Kathy Beck, who serves as the council representative to the recreation commission, presented a bill for $741 from Cowboy Couture for t-shirts and discussed a $780 bid from Hangry Services, Inc.. Both bids, which were for the pickleball tournament on July 22,...

  • Pulling their weight

    Joshua Wood|Jul 27, 2023

Since the invention of the combustible engine, it’s been common for people to compete to brag about their equipment. During Prohibition, moonshiners created the model for NASCAR by racing their vehicles along county roads. In farm country, it was less about speed and more about strength. To show the strength of their tractors, farmers would compete in power pulls or tractor pulls. The concept is fairly simple: a tractor is hooked to a sled with a set amount of weight. The sled can be in two diff...

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Jul 27, 2023

A man with ties to Saratoga and the Platte Valley is on the run from the Rawlins Police Department following an incident on the evening of July 27. According to a press release from the Rawlins Police Department, officers responded to a call about a suspicious person in an SUV at a business located on Airport Road. Upon arriving at the scene, one of the officers recognized the driver of the SUV as Wyatt Fluty, 29, of Saratoga. Fluty fled in the SUV until it crashed into a creek bed, then fled on... Full story

  • Calling for Reinforcements

    Joshua Wood - Stevenson Newspapers|Jul 20, 2023

More than two years have passed since the formation of a working group for Never Forget Park—formerly Tyler Pickett Memorial Park—and from the outside looking in it appears there has been little more progress than in the previous decade. It’s not for lack of trying. “I have written six grants and have a couple more in the works,” said Stacy Crimmins, who has been with the working group since its formation. “Unfortunately, (we) have not received any of those grants yet. It’s a little frustrating...

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Sarah Fitzwater and Matthew Wagy are accused of defrauding three welfare programs of nearly $45,000 between 2017 and 2023. Fitzwater is facing 19 counts, Wagy is facing 9 counts as an accomplice. Each count carries with it a $10,000 fine, up to 10 years in prison or both. • Few issues at Saratoga Days

    Joshua Wood|Jul 13, 2023

For the past few years, Saratoga Days has drawn people from near and far to East Bridge Avenue for a Independance Day street dance headlined by the likes of Ned LeDoux, Chancy Williams and, this year, Neal McCoy. While Saratoga Day is, arguably, one of the biggest parties all year for Saratoga it was relatively uneventful as far as a law enforcement response. “This was my first year being with the Saratoga Police Department for Saratoga Days. I have participated in the past, I’ve been aro...

  • Raising the (hat) bar in Saratoga

    Joshua Wood|Jul 13, 2023

“We’re not selling a cowboy hat, we’re selling a lifestyle.” This seems to be the unofficial motto for Sophia Borg, owner of Palomino Hat Bar which recently opened inside of StrongTower Designs in Saratoga. On July 8, StrongTower Designs celebrated its 10th Anniversary and the grand opening of Borg’s business. Western Roots, Southern Charm With her southern drawl and charm, Borg may seem like a transplant from the south but she is no stranger to Saratoga. The milliner, in fact, has deep root...

  • Lessons Learned in Pursuit of Food

    Joshua Wood|Jul 13, 2023

In the past year, I’ve discovered my inner chef and it’s something I’ve come to really enjoy. Of course, it isn’t something that happened right away. In fact, I’ve made periodic voyages into the culinary world in the past and learned a number of lessons along the way. To be honest, I’ve always been a fan of food, though it may not have appeared as such when I was a child. While I inhaled childhood favorites such as pizza, hamburgers and hotdogs I would struggle with foods like poor man’s strogan...

  • Winds of Change in Carbon County

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Jul 6, 2023

It took more than a decade, but the TransWest Express transmission line will begin construction this year following a "notice to proceed" from the Bureau of Land Management in April of this year. On June 20, an official groundbreaking held in Carbon County was attended by Governor Mark Gordon along with two Biden Administration cabinet members: Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and Secretary of the Interior Deb Halaand. Despite being on opposite sides of the political spectrum, all three...

  • Tune in, Saratoga

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Jul 6, 2023

A tornado touches down in Carbon County, grounded long enough to create significant damage, and in the process takes out cellular towers and internet infrastructure. It's an emergency, but now the cellphone in the hands of onlookers has become nothing more than a fancy camera. How could the Office of Emergency Management function? "If you don't have internet connectivity or cell towers, then you're kind of hosed," says Rick Parent, call sign W0ZAP. "That's where HAM radio comes in because it...

  • Christen resigns as town clerk

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Jun 29, 2023

The Town of Saratoga will once-again begin the search for a town clerk following the resignation of Marie Christen on June 20. Christen, who struggled at times to hold back tears, read her own resignation letter near the end of the meeting. “I want to express my gratitude for the opportunities I have had while working here. I have learned an immense amount and appreciate the support provided by my co-workers and the council,” said Marie. “I am committed to ensure a smooth transition and will...

  • Find compassion for those struggling with mental health

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspaper|Jun 15, 2023

Communities in Carbon County have had a dark cloud settle over what is typically a sunny summer with the loss of three lives to suicide. This overwhelming loss proves two things: it is difficult to know what battle someone is fighting internally and we need to talk about it more than we already do. I am no stranger to the tragedy of suicide and the struggles in Wyoming with mental health. Nearly four years ago, the Saratoga Sun lost its publisher to suicide. It was a shock and one which still...

  • Everything's Coming up Pickett

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Jun 8, 2023

On June 4, "Joe Pickett"-the Paramount+ series based on the titular character-premiered its second season with two episodes. While most fans may have watched from their home, a number of Saratoga and Platte Valley residents gathered at the Platte Valley Community Center (PVCC) the premiere on the big screen. Based on the book series written by Chuck "C.J." Box, the streaming series follows the Wyoming Game Warden as he navigates family life, his role with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department...

  • Give A Moose Some Space

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Jun 8, 2023

Over the past few weeks, a young bull moose has seemingly made itself at home in Saratoga as it has foraged around the community. Contrary to the popular children's book-which posits that if you give a moose a muffin it will inevitably want some jam-it is best to give the large animal as much space as possible. According to Teal Cufaude, wildlife biologist with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, it is common for moose to arrive in Saratoga due to its proximity to the Upper North Platte River....

  • An ounce of compassion

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Apr 6, 2023

If you read or listen to certain media outlets, you might be under the impression that an army of men, dressed as women, are coming to destroy everything you hold dear in your life. They're coming to invade women's sports, indoctrinate little children and spy on sorority houses. If you believe all this, I have some prime ocean-front realty in Wyoming to sell you. Complete with a bridge. Compete Like A Girl The biggest front of the culture war over whether transgender people should be treated...

  • Don't call it a comeback

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspaper|Mar 30, 2023

It's not enough for a newspaper to cover the community, it also needs to talk to the community. This piece of sage advice came from Virginia Parker recently. This comment, along with her involvement in the community prior to her time with the Saratoga Sun, made it quite obvious she would be a good fit for the position of publisher. This hasn't stopped the amount of times I get asked if I'm back with the Saratoga Sun following my brief departure from print this last summer. Though I may be seen...

  • Chamber Honors the Best of 2022

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Mar 16, 2023

On the night of March 9, the Great Hall at the Platte Valley Community Center was packed with businesses, organizations and community members for the 2022 Annual Saratoga/Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. With food and drinks provided by the Saratoga Hot Springs Resort and music from Stillhouse Blues of Rawlins, the event appeared to be a success. According to Chamber CEO Amanda Knotwell, tickets for the event had sold out. While some who had purchased tickets or tables may not...

  • Sobriety Above All

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Mar 9, 2023

"I always made a promise to myself that if I was ever to use heroin again, I would make sure it killed me because I didn't want to live that lifestyle." Michelle Ellis was 13 years old when she first experimented with alcohol and marijuana. That eventually led her to prescription pain medications then to heroin and to methamphetamine. Ellis just recently celebrated three years of sobriety from methamphetamine and six years from heroin. Just like her road into addiction wasn't easy, neither was...

  • Taking the Highway to Health

    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Mar 9, 2023

The famous rock band AC/DC once sang about taking a particular path to a place for those who misbehaved in life. This year, Memorial Hospital of Carbon County (MHCC) is unveiling a different road: the Highway to Health. For the past several years, MHCC has held annual wellness clinics and blood draws around March and April. These clinics allowed Carbon County residents to get an annual checkup, selected blood labs and later go over that information with their provider. This year, the hospital re...
