  • Outgoing mayor feels transparency has been good

Letter to the Editor John Zeiger|Sep 10, 2014

Editor Kudos goes out to Union Wireless and Carbon County School District 2 for bringing in Craig Conrad to not only speak with the students but to share with families during the back to school picnic. I hope that the students got as much out of what he had to share as this parent did. I am going to borrow a quote that he used that night “When it gets darkest the stars come out” this is translated to mean “Don’t lose hope”. I think that all of us have experienced those darkest nights in our lives, and if it wouldn’t have been for the stars s...

  • Mayor explains reasons behind franchise fee

    John Zeiger|Jun 4, 2014

Editor, In the next couple months the council will be considering if the town is going to start charging a franchise fee to Carbon Power and Light for the use of town easement/right-of-ways for their power lines. If the decision is made to charge a franchise fee it will be the first time in Carbon Powers history that they were charged a fee by the Town of Saratoga. Carbon Power currently pays the City of Laramie a 5 percent franchise fee on 6-8 meters that are within the City of Laramie and absorb that cost because it is minimum number of...

  • Bicyclists can get tickets, too

    John Zeiger|May 14, 2014

Editor A long standing joke in Wyoming has always been: How do you tell it is spring time in Wyoming? The license plates turn green!! The other thing that we see when it turns spring in Saratoga is more people of all ages riding their bikes. There have been some concerns already voiced on bicyclist not stopping at stop signs or yielding to oncoming traffic. Bicyclists can also receive a citation for not stopping or yielding. When riding your bike you need to also stay as far to the right of the road as possible. Remember when in the down town...

  • Mayor wants Saratogans to be nicer

    John Zeiger|Apr 23, 2014

Editor. I recently listened to a presentation from a gentleman that had moved to Saratoga a number of years ago to help an organization get back on their feet. The first day that he was here he was approached by a long time resident of Saratoga and told that he might as well leave because everyone in Saratoga was a Communist. A couple days later he was approached by another long time resident of Saratoga who told him “You are a stranger here and you will be a stranger here in twenty years.” This might almost seem comical if it was the only tim...

  • Employees appreciate boss who takes time to listen

    John Zeiger|Apr 9, 2014

Editor, The first reality television show was Candid Camera that started back in 1947. In 2002 another reality show “Survival” saw the largest ever television audience for their first episode. We now have such reality shows as Duck Dynasty, Biggest Loser, and The Voice. However my personal favorite is Undercover Boss where the CEO’s and others from large companies go undercover and work side by side with their employees to see what the employees think and how they might be able to improve things. At the end of each show they meet with their...

  • Letters to the editor

    John Zeiger|Mar 5, 2014

Editor, I just wanted to say thank you to the Saratoga Sun, for publishing the findings from the Town of Saratoga’s audit. The audit has always been available for public inspection but we have never published it in the paper. In the last nine years there has never been a request for a copy of the audit. After the allegations of misappropriation of funds and the covering up of the same, I wasn’t surprised to have two people come in and request a copy of it. I support those people that do this if done with the right intentions. However, it app...

  • Mayor learns a lesson from speech students

    John Zeiger|Feb 26, 2014

Editor: Instead of talking about a town issue I thought I would comment on my experience this past weekend. I had the opportunity to judge for the speech meet in Rawlins. When I was asked to do so I must admit I had reservations as I have never judged one in the past. My daughter had asked me if there was anything I would prefer not to judge. I told her that I would prefer not to judge the debate portion - what a surprise when I found out she didn’t relay the message. I ended up judging four different debate sessions three of which dealt w...

  • Mayor states his case for Ordinance 822

    John Zeiger|Jan 1, 2014

Editor I would like to explain the reasoning behind Ordinance 822, as I said in the council meeting one of the main reasons for introducing the ordinance is the concerns I have over Conflict of Interest with board members discussing or voting on items that could be perceived as benefitting them. ( 9-13-106. Official decisions and votes. ) Other reasons for the introduction to the ordinance were the fact in the last year we have had to have police officers attend the planning meeting on occasion because of concerns for the behavior of board...

  • Mayor explains minute's exclusions

    John Zeiger|Dec 25, 2013

Editor, Writing a letter to the editor is a lot like posting on Facebook, once you hit the submit button it’s there for everybody to see. I have no plans to stop doing both of these. At the December 17th meeting it was questioned why comments made by the public under public comment were not being added to the minutes. Wyoming Statue 15-1-110 states: The governing body is required to designate a “legal newspaper” and to publish once, the minutes of all regular meetings, special meetings, workshops where council action is taken, and title of al...

  • Mayor looking forward to team approach with WAM and WCCA

    John Zeiger|Nov 27, 2013

Editor, I spent last Tuesday evening and Wednesday with the Wyoming Association of Municipalities board interviewing 5 potential candidates for the position of Executive Coordinator of WAM. The WAM board was divided into four separate panels and each candidate had to go before each panel. Part of the interview process was they had to present to the WAM board issues surrounding HB 0085 which dealt with the buffer zones surrounding towns. They all five basically identified the main problem was lack of communications between the municipalities...
