The Hotel Wolf will be hosting The Saratoga Lion Club annual Calcutta auction Friday night for the state championship races and the 35th Annual Donald E. Erickson Memorial Chariot races this weekend. The Calcutta style betting, which auctions teams off to the highest bidder, is the primary way the Lions Club is able to raise funds to help put on the event and other activities throughout the year. Joe Glode, one of the Lions Club organizers, has some good advice for those new to the unique style...
The future of chariot racing is looking pretty dim, John Williams, with the state racing committee, said. Most of the racers are old-timers. Williams, who has been racing for 14 years, said people say they are not chariot racing because there is no money it. “There is no money in other horse sports, but they are going great guns,” Williams said. With as many as 30 teams racing just a few years ago, the state championship races have only 19 teams qualifying. To qualify for the state races, com...

John Blumenthal is a familiar face in the Platte Valley, having grown up out at Brush Creek Ranch as a fifth generation Platte Valley resident. His great-great-great grandfather was J.W. Hugus, one of Saratoga's founding fathers. Blumenthal returned to the Platte River Valley following a tour as a Marine in Afghanistan and promptly got back to work by starting his own contracting company last March. "We just fell into it," Blumenthal said, when asked how he and business partner Eric Padgett got...
The entire Saratoga Panthers wrestling team qualified for state at regionals last Saturday. Daynon Mowry and Thatcher Spiering finished second at 126 and 145 respectively and earned All Conference, an especially big honor considering that unlike basketball and other sports where All Conference is voted on by coaches, the wrestlers have to place in the top two at regionals to earn that honor. Jaxon King, finally back from a shoulder injury, finished third with a win by fall over Cole Cook from...
The Encampment Boys Varsity basketball team had the eye of the tiger when they hosted the Baggs Rattlers last Friday night. The Tigers took the win 54-47 in a game that had the crowd on its feet several times. The game may not have made much of a difference concerning the Tigers or Rattlers placement at regionals, but the Tigers chalked up a moral and motivational victory. Head coach Clint Bromley hopes the win will provide his team with the confidence necessary to carry his Tigers through the...
The Lady Tigers played a great defensive game last Friday night when they faced off against Baggs but were hampered by some ball control issues and missed shots in the second half of their tough loss to the Lady Rattlers 51-43. “We failed to make some plays down the stretch and that was the difference in the outcome,” head coach Amy Clay said. Courtney James put up 20 points and was 5 of 7 from the 3-point line and Cassidy Little contributed 12 points and five assists. Lady Tigers bit by Rat...

Encampment Mayor Greg Salisbury discussed with the council as well as members of Encampment Public Works, his concern over the recent vandalism of the Encampment Park restrooms at the regular council meeting last Thursday. “I guess somebody went in there and [defecated] all over the place. So, I’ve had [Public Works] put some padlocks on it so once you guys do shut down for the season, put them on there,” Salisbury said. “I think another thing is to do is maybe invest in some of these cameras...
Bio-Domes were the main topic of discussion last Thursday night when Mayor Leroy Stephenson and the rest of the Riverside Town Council talked about improvements to the towns wastewater lagoon facility. The Bio-Domes would be placed in the lagoons to create a bacterial film to help digest the solids in the lagoons and clean up the dissolved oxygen levels of the lagoons, this helps the other good bacterium work on through the winter months which, “are our most problematic,” according to Ste...
The most controversial Oscar nominee this year isn’t American Sniper. Nor is it Selma, the Oscar-snubbed Martin Luther King docudrama. If you were like me, you probably hadn’t even heard about the film. Chances are you likely will following this year’s Academy Awards. The documentary, nominated for an award in the Best Documentary category is titled, “CitizenFour”. CitizenFour was the codename used by Edward Snowden when he reached out to award- winning documentarian, Laura Poitras. In the fi... Full story

1 Years Ago: Living’s High Cost: On every side we are being hemmed in, and the cost of living is hemming in closer every day. Business nationally is on the toboggan and no end in sight. We are burdened with a “war tax” in a time of peace. It looks very much as tho’ influence and capital were just trying to see how much of a monkey they could make out of the Wilson administration. There is little doubt but what the speculators and some corporations were at the bottom of getting Uncle Sam to ship out all his flour, that he might specula...
According to Saratoga Volunteer Fire Chief Randy Sikes, a natural gas leak is what forced the temporary evacuation of staff and residents at Deseret Health & Rehab Monday afternoon. It was just after noon when Dr. Dean Bartholomew smelled the gas and had staff call 911. " I walked in and immediately smelled the gas, everyone else must have been getting used to it throughout the day and didn't notice it ... I had one of the staff step outside and walk back in. that's when we made the call.",... Website

People always ask me “where are you from?” Often I get that before or immediately after “hello”. It’s not an easy question to answer. Not when you were born in Alaska then moved to Arizona at 6 years old, which is what I blame my hot and cold personality on. Yeah, I just did that. While moving from Alaska to Arizona I spent my kindergarten year in Riverside. Those are some of my earliest memories of the Platte Valley. A place of serenity that existed in the midst of a pretty tumultuou...
