  • Saratoga choir 'tunes up' for Sunday concert

    FW Broschart|Dec 7, 2016

Four generations of Valerie Larscheid's family have been involved in the Saratoga Community Choir, for somewhere around 30 to 35 years, she says. Larscheid laughed at the fact that, even as a director of the group and a relative of a founder, she is not completely sure when the group was founded. It is fair to say, though, that the Choir has been performing Christmas concerts in the Valley for about 30 years. The Community Choir was originally started by her grandmother and a few others who...

The Encampment Preschool has begun collecting donations to bolster its tuition fund so the organization can continue to offer tuition reimbursement for students and families. The preschool, located in the Encampment K-12 building, is not a part of the school district, but instead is a nonprofit organization which relies on donations to offer its services. The school offers a morning class for 3- to 4-year-old children, and an afternoon class for 4- to 5-year-old students, and is hoping to raise $10,000-$15,000 to defray tuition costs for all...

  • Russia, Iran may foil OPEC plan to cut oil production

    FW Broschart|Nov 30, 2016

Russia, the largest oil-producing country that is not a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), has signaled some resistance to pressure from the cartel to cut oil production. Iran, an OPEC member, is also fighting back against the cartel, saying it won't cut its own production of crude oil. Russian and Iranian resistance to OPEC's wishes to cut production might be good news for consumers who will continue to pay less at the pumps to fill up their cars, but could be m...

  • Tuker goes NFR

    FW Broschart|Nov 23, 2016

Were one to read too much into his laconic nature, they might never guess that Tuker Carricato, 11, of Saratoga, is an up-and-coming junior rodeo champion. The young man's quiet demeanor is belied by a sense of confidence and competitive spirit that becomes evident once he opens up about his rodeo experience. Tuker will leave Saratoga later this week to travel to Las Vegas where he will compete in the mini bareback competition at the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association National Rodeo Finals....

  • Wyo. unemployment down, still above national average

    FW Broschart|Nov 23, 2016

Wyoming’s month-to-month unemployment rate saw a decrease of 0.3 percent, bringing the state’s unemployment rate to 5.1 percent for the month of October. That is only 0.2 points higher than the U.S. average of 4.9 percent. According to figures released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Wyoming was one of seven states in the country that saw a statistically significant decrease in unemployment rates. Despite the spot of bright news for the state, when counting over-the-year, unemployment in Wyoming is up, from 4.3 percent to...

  • Riverside donates to library

    FW Broschart|Nov 16, 2016

The town of Riverside council met briefly Thursday, absent mayor Leroy Stephenson, and quickly dispensed with routine business. The entire meeting lasted about 18 minutes and most of that time was spent hearing issues from the public. The board quickly approved meeting minutes and voted to pay the town’s bills before moving on to guest speakers and voting to allocate $500 to the Carbon County Library System which will go directly to benefit the Encampment-Riverside branch. Over the summer, as a funding battle between the library board and count...

    FW Broschart|Nov 16, 2016

The Town of Encampment Town Council met Thursday, without the town mayor present, to deal with routine business facing the town and to hear from two members of the public. A full-page color ad in the publication c...

  • Flying with the Governor

    FW Broschart|Nov 16, 2016

The thing that surprised Saratoga High School (SHS)Senior Alicia Zaragoza the most about Wyoming’s Governor Matt Mead and his staff were how much like regular old Wyoming folk they seemed, she said. “All of his counselors, or the people that give him advice, are just normal people who grew up in Wyoming and they’re no different than the people that I grew up with in Saratoga,” Zaragoza said. Zaragoza, winner of Girls State earlier this year, traveled to Cheyenne early one morning in August and shadowed the governor all day, but only after c...

  • Lady Tigers take third in state

    FW Broschart|Nov 9, 2016

Disappointment showed on the faces of Encampment High School volleyball players Friday in Casper, when the Lady Tigers gave up a match to the Little Snake River rattlers in the semifinal round at the State Finals. The loss to the Rattlers eliminated the team from taking first place, relegating the Encampment netters to either third or fourth place at best. The loss was a blow and emotions ran high for team members, especially those who were in their final weekend as volleyball players for...

  • James Shepherd, USN

    FW Broschart|Nov 9, 2016

James Shepherd, 64, of Saratoga joined the U.S. Navy in 1970. Born in Grants Pass, Oregon and having lived in Klamath Falls, the first major shock to his system he dealt with was traveling to Orlando, Florida for boot camp. "I was from Oregon, this temperate place, and they sent me to Orlando where it's hot all the time." After boot, he went to Naval Station Great Lakes for gunnery school. On the north side of Chicago, Great Lakes' heat is not quite as stifling as that of Central Florida....

  • D'RON CAMPBELL, USAF

    FW Broschart|Nov 9, 2016

"I was on one of the last Bear missions," D'Ron Campbell, 47, of Saratoga says. "It was maybe 1994 when they (the Russians) — before open skies — were still poking us. "We were launched with F-15 fighters," she says. A Bear mission focused on the interception of Russian nuclear bombers. During the Cold War, Soviet bombers would constantly probe the outer edges of U.S. airspace to test the reactions of the American military and practice making nuclear bombing runs. Campbell is a graduate of the...

  • Nightmare on Elm St.

    FW Broschart|Nov 2, 2016

Saratoga's Halloween Trick-or-Treating was interrupted by a fire that sent the Saratoga Volunteer Fire Department scrambling to extinguish a blaze at the corner of Elm and Third streets on Monday. The fire started at approximately 4:45 p.m., during the peak of the town's trick-or-treating, sending plumes of smoke rolling through the downtown area. Firefighters, many of whom were downtown already for trick-or-treating, responded to the blaze quickly, but the structure-a large wooden shed-was...

  • State Bound

    FW Broschart|Nov 2, 2016

Encampment High School girls' volleyball went to Lander over the weekend and fought for a place in state finals, defeating anyone unfortunate enough to face the Lady Tigers at the regional meet. The Lady Tigers took on two old foes at the meet, Baggs and Cokeville, and also faced off against St. Stevens, all of whom found themselves on the business end of a loss against the netters from Encampment. The Lady Tigers won all three matches over the weekend and only gave up two sets during that...

  • Election system sound

    FW Broschart|Oct 26, 2016

In response to allegations made during the presidential race by Republican Candidate Donald Trump, the Wyoming Secretary of State and County Clerks are reassuring voters that Wyoming’s voting system is secure. Trump has repeatedly warned followers in the past several weeks that his opponent, Hillary Clinton, would steal the election by fraudulent measures thanks to a far-reaching conspiracy. During the most recent debate between the candidates, Trump said he could not commit to accepting the outcome of the election, causing some to raise q...

    FW Broschart|Oct 26, 2016

The Encampment Lady Tigers volleyball team saw their impressive win streak interrupted by Farson-Eden Friday, but the Tigers secured a berth in postseason play regardless, and also ended Saratoga's season Saturday. The undefeated Tigers lost in Farson-Eden in four sets, ending the varsity squad's uninterrupted string of 23 victories. The loss did not erode the team's standing in its division however, where it is still ranked No. 1. In the Farson Match, the Tigers lost the first set 16-25. It...

    FW Broschart|Oct 19, 2016

Encampment girls' volleyball has expanded its winning streak to 23-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference, despite a squeaker of a match against Little Snake River Valley in Baggs Friday. With Sierra Martinez out Thursday, the Lady Tigers seemed to have no difficulty dispatching the North Park Lady Cats in Encampment, sending the Lady Cats back to Walden, with a resounding loss. Friday's match against Little Snake River was a harder fought game, with the Tigers barely pulling out the win against...

  • Tap Dancing

    FW Broschart|Oct 19, 2016

The Saratoga Water and Sewer Joint Powers Board (sewer board) met Wednesday after a month without a regular meeting to dispense with accumulated business. The sewer board debated whether or not it had the authority to grant permission for a tap for the waste transfer station that is under construction. Board member Russ Waldner said the ordinance made it unclear to him whether the sewer board could unilaterally approve a tap without the involvement of the town council, since the transfer station is outside town limits. Waldner took issue with t...

A Saratoga motel that closed in 1963 to become a dormitory for seasonal workers at the Old Baldy Club has reopened as a lodge, giving visitors to town another option in lodging. • Have bees, will travel

    FW Broschart|Oct 12, 2016

Jaime Martinez moves his hands in orbit around his head while miming swatting at invisible insects and says, “Don’t do that; if you do, they go crazy.” Martinez, a truck driver, was talking about the thousands of bees that were swarming in a fluidic and brindled gray cloud around one of two trucks loaded with beehives that was passing through Rawlins Sept 28. The trucks were parked along Cedar street, far from the restaurant that Martinez and the driver of the other truck stopped at, and far from anyone else. “We’re supposed to drive non-stop...
