The issue of Saratoga’s lack of off-street parking was briefly discussed in regards to an application submitted by Jon Nelson for a bed and breakfast. Since the entire downtown is considered non-conforming as most structures were built prior to current zoning codes, the motion was passed to recommend approval to the Town Council. The second public hearing was for the p...

Two booms, dust and a flash. That is how Rick Hughes described the accident that shook Saratoga on Monday morning. Hughes was standing just inside the door of his insurance agency when a car passed only a couple yards from him, hit a telephone pole, then crashed into the fuel island at neighboring Kum & Go. Hughes said, "The car came so fast that when I looked up it had already hit the pole and the transformer exploded, then there was nothing but dust. You couldn't see five feet out the...
The Encampment Town Council meeting was held on May 14, 2020. It was decided that, since the COVID-19 pandemic has made everything so uncertain, the dredging project would be postponed. Jon Nelson of North Fork Engineering was present to give the council a few updates and provide them with a few options for screening equipment to filter out the trash going through the lagoons. The rest of the meeting went by with extreme expediency with the council approving most agenda items including software...
On Monday May 18, 2020 several families volunteered to clean up Sandy Beach. It makes it really dirty and dangerous for the kids to play. Its fine to have gatherings in the...

The first Thursday in May was designated as the National Day of Prayer by President Harry Truman on April 17, 1952. However, the tradition goes back to President Abraham Lincoln who had established a fall observance along with the official Thanksgiving holiday in 1863. While some may not think it necessary to have a day designated for prayer, studies have shown that about 55% of Americans say they pray every day and another 21% say they pray weekly. A pair of Osprey have made the nesting platform on Pic Pike Road their home. The couple have been seen soaring around the area for several days. Carbon Power and Light took the initiative to give the Osprey an alternate nest site that is safe, away from power lines. In the past the Boy Scouts also helped with the project. There are quite a few of the platforms in our area. According to Biff Burton, Wyoming Game and Fish Department Game Warden, they are very successful, giving the Osprey a safe...
The weather was beautiful and what should have been a pleasant drive down County Road 385 was marred by a grotesque sight this past weekend. Approximately two miles outside of Saratoga, the remains of a dozen or so animals including, elk, deer, antelope and two black and white dogs were spotted. It appears that people have been dumping animal carcasses on the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands for at least a few months. Some of the animals appear to have been processed after hunting....

The North Platte River received some unexpected traffic early Thursday, April 9, as a semi-truck and trailer plunged into its frigid waters near Fort Steele. The sight must have been something to behold as vehicles as large as this can weigh up to 80,000 pounds when fully loaded. One could imagine a mighty splash as the truck plunged into the river bed after threading the needle between a tree and the railing of the overpass. The recovery of the vehicle, however, was not as dramatic, although...

As promised in my previous column “Florentine it,” I am going to share another way to add vegetables to a picky eater’s diet. Use spaghetti squash instead of pasta. This substitution also helps reduce some carbohydrates. Spaghetti squash does still contain some carbs as it is considered a starchy vegetable. However, one cup of cooked spaghetti squash has just 40 calories and 10 grams of carbohydrate. Whereas, one cup of cooked spaghetti noodles has about 200 calories and 40 grams of carbo...
I have talked about toilet paper more in the past week than I have probably ever before in my life! The COVID-19 virus does not even have symptoms that would require the use of extra toilet paper. Many of us are stunned at the level of hoarding and lack of respect for fellow community members. There are plenty of elderly and people who live on fixed incomes that cannot afford to purchase groceries and supplies ahead of time. They shop on a week to week basis. The panic purchasing that has been...
Bob Smith, owner of the Roan Hill Ranch Guesthouse was represented at the March 10th Planning Commission meeting by legal council, Jon Schnal who moved to dismiss a complaint regarding horse nuisance. Mr. Schnal said the complaint had a lack of merit and was baseless. For almost 11 years, the ranch has been in operation and the horses have been an integral part of the operation. The special use permit for the operation of a guesthouse has been renewed by the town several times in the past. The l...

The Airport Board Meeting on February 25, 2020 was scheduled to discuss the apron expansion project and complete the WACIP, which is a request for federal funding. An apron is the area of the airport where aircraft are parked, unloaded, loaded, refueled or boarded. There was much discussion between the three proposals for the apron project but the Airport Board came to a decision, picking the design that would make it easier to move airplanes and remove snow in the winter. The proposed design...
The news of an earthquake near Saratoga is nothing new. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there was a 3.0 magnitude quake February 4, 2020 at approximately 5:36 p.m. The epicenter was at 41.3810 N, 107.1370 W which is near the Jack Creek area at a depth of 5 kilometers. Five years ago there were two earthquakes of similar magnitudes. Earthquakes are the result of movement of the earth along faults, movements of magma chambers like in Yellowstone National Park and from man-made events...
One of the first items discussed during the Airport Board meeting on February 12 was the financial report. In 2019, the airport saw a total of 460 “movements” and $37,150 in landing fees. So far, this January is up from last year seeing 21 jets, 3 turbo props and $1,725 in landing fees. A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 9 Circular was received with criteria for runway conditions and reporting. If a runway has more than 1/4 inch of ice and snow the FAA will close it until the report is upg...
The Riverside Town Council meeting of February 13 was as short as the agenda. An update was provided by Helen Weiland, representative for the South Central Wyoming EMS Joint Powers Board on their new hire. According to Weiland, they are having issues with the EMS state office certifying the paramedic even though the person who was hired is on the national registry and her license is good nationally. Weiland said, “The state is just dragging their feet.” It could take as long as six months to...
